My day at training camp on Saturday:
Arrived at the NovaCare complex at 11 am and parked in the visitors parking lot. I proceeded to the gates where the Eagles had a will-call tent set up. I received a color coded guest pass (yellow) and entered the practice fields where tents were set up based on the color coded passes and my tent was with the other season ticket holders (about 50 of us) in the Retzlaff tent.
Upon arriving at the tent they handed out rally towels, hand sanitizer, sun screen and beach balls. There were also training camp booklets for everybody. Each tent provided free catered lunch from Chickie and Pete's. Salads, fruit cups, cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, mussels, ham and cheese sliders, lunch meat wraps, crab fries, desserts and an assortment of drinks. They were also giving out free Rita's Water Ice on the field.
They had yellow lines that you couldn't go past but it didn't matter because you were 2 feet from the field. At around 11:45 the team came out and stretched. For anyone who hasn't seen it live, Kelly's practices waste no time. They have boards set up with timers. A voice will come up over the speaker system and say "Period 1, individuals" and the different groups will work on something for 5 minutes or so. Then there will be a horn and the voice will say "Period 2, team" and everyone will run to the designated field and work on something and so on an so forth. They had different signals like I said earlier, individuals, team, instructional, special teams (I'm sure there were more but I don't remember). I was sitting in the stands for a bit in front of John Gonzalez and Geoff Mosher and the other reporters. They were mostly talking about how good the Sixers were going to be in a few years. Peter King was walking around, man does he look old in person.
The one drill I thought was neat was the passing drills. They had the 4 QBs in camp (Foles, Sanchez, Barkley and Kinne) plus another guy who wasn't in uniform so I guess he was a ball boy or something all lined up. Then the WRs, RBs and TEs would run 5 different routes. Two would be in the flat, one short cross, one long cross and one bomb. Depending on where you were in line you would throw one of the routes and then move down the line to get a different throw. IMO, Sanchez look especially good. He had the strongest arm of the group and was money on each and every throw. Foles look pretty good too but Sanchez really stood out to me. Barkley didn't look very good, a lot of ducks and not much arm strength.
After about an hour of doing different drills they started doing special teams drills. They had two kickers. Henery and Spears. Spears is a really tiny guy and from what I saw didn't have the same leg strength that Henery did. They did field goals first and Henery hit the post with his first kick from about 45 yard or so. Then they did some more drills before coming back and doing kickoff return coverage. Henery was kicking the ball about 4 yards deep in the end zone, the other guy about the same. Sproles looked pretty good doing the kickoffs. Brandon Boykin look especially fast when he did the returns. Sproles looks even smaller in person but the guy is shifty as hell.
Then they did 11 v 11's and some other drills before calling practice when it started to rain and Ed Reynolds and Huff collided. Wheel routes were the play of the 11 v 11's with Sproles burning a LB on one for a nice gain. Jenkins and Nate Allen were the safeties running with the starters at the first practice. Villanueva might not make the team, but he is a massive human being. I think he was the biggest dude I've ever seen.
After practice we were asked to return to our tents where a player came and signed autographs for us. We got Nate Allen. He was really nice. Don Smolenski (Eagles Pres.) came around and shook out hands thanking us for coming out. All in all was a great experience.
