I cared about this stuff in 90/94 when they were cutting to commercial breaks during live action, or even 10 years ago when I had to go to a bar at 8:00 am on a Saturday to watch Chelsea games. Now that I've got all I want and my wildest dreams have been met, I really don't care what joe six pack thinks about soccer, and I can actually do without my local sports radio guys trying to talk about it. Just go back to talking about Packers OTAs for two hours in June rather than taking calls from listeners on the topic of whether or not they're watching the world freakin cup. I know I'm a selfish ###hole when it comes to this, but I really don't need to talk to a guy at the bar wearing a captain America shirt who doesn't know Jermaine Jones from Tim Howard and I have no desire to try to convince someone to like this sport if they don't already.

I used to care a lot, but now I don't really. But more than that, the rock is at the top of the hill and the stuff that's been set in motion will go on now no matter what.

Agree. We've come a long way from the dark ages of the 80s and early 90s. Back then, there was Toby Charles' Soccer Made in Germany, the English leage scores in agate type in the Sunday sports page and an overpriced month old copy of World Soccer at a downtown newsstand. The Internet and cable TV have a lot to do with it of course so there may be a bit of chicken and egg to the increased American interest in the sport. If this WC increases popularity that's great but I'm generally content with what's available today.

I hadnt thought of it this way, guess its time to let it go and be happy its moving forward and whatever games I do want to watch are being televised.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I also don't care when a Shaugnessy writes another column about why he doesn't like soccer. Its probably trolling, but even if it weren't it's not something that's worth paying any attention to. I might sincerely believe that the NFL and boxing can never be great sports so long as they require men to endure punishing hits from other men that may lead to life long medical issues. But if I call for the NFL to move to flag football and for boxing to be more like fencing, the organizations controlling those sports (and the fans of those sports) should just ignore me. Because I can't be won over without totally changing the essence of the sport in the first place.

As for Suarez (and take this for what you will as I'm a United fan), the handball should NEVER be held against him. Its not his fault the other team missed the PK. He got red carded and they moved on. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.
I am not sure his ban is long enough but thats my opinion. I think it is justified and Liverpool should be without him as it is a multiple time offense including doing it once while a member of Liverpool. Its a risk they take by keeping him on. He had a fantastic season and looked to be over his issues (no major diving, no biting, no issues) but then this....
However, I also do not think Liverpool should have to pay him. Correct me if I am wrong but in the NFL if you are suspended you also do not get paid. Is that correct? Why should Liverpool have to pay him? Maybe a 3mill fine would then be deemed excessive?

Those are quarter handicap bets. You are betting half your bet at -1.5 and the other half at -.5 It's very rare to find that anywhere else but asia.
ETA that there are three style of quarter bets. Each splits your bet over the nearest two 1/4 bets.
So you can do a win/push on these.

IMO, it should be lost wages- no fine.
and Uruguay needs to zip it up, and just play the game- they're capable without him (but yeah, his loss is obviously a massive hit).

Funny they picked the one American ref to do that to, On a side note the one game I saw that guy do he was quite good.
They're due. Let's face it, of the 8 #1 seeds to go through the two best matchups for the US would have been either Belgium or Costa Rica. We have a pretty darn good shot here.

My issue is that the verdict is lopsided (in my mind), with FIFA "only" adding 1 extra game to the previous top suspension, which I feel minimizes the financial impact on them, while the 4 month suspension severely impacts the club financially.
I think a life time ban from the national team and 4 months without salary would've been perfectly fine (even though I realize that would never fly with the player's unions), or a much higher personal fine and 2 months ban (keeping him out of pre-season play), with a WC ban would have been a more appropriate punishment.
Obviously I am looking at this from a Liverpool perspective, so YMMV.

Also... across the three games the US had 3.0 xGs compared to 4.5 xGs for our opponents. So we may have gotten a bit fortunate too.
ETA: funny that Muller's goal looks like it was actually the lowest-percentage shot on the chart.

What I have seen is 100k in Swiss Francs, which is around 120k USD, or 66k GBP I think (without looking it up). Agreed, but the player's unions, both in England and in Europe are very strong, and I doubt they would allow it. They are even considering pressuring FIFA because it "hinders his ability to work" or some such BS.

A few random World Cup thoughts.
1. It's amazing to me how much of Neymar's considerable international reputation comes from his play with the national team. Particularly for this era, his strike rate for Brazil is astounding. And he's never come close to those type of goal scoring numbers for a club team. Not even for Santos. Brazil clearly plays through Neymar to a remarkable extant (I thought his best game of the group stage was actually the 0-0 draw with Mexico where he broke out some sick, sick moves). He might be a guy who just needs to be THE GUY. The problem is that while even though Argentina has been reliant on Messi, I can imagine Argentina winning if Messi is shut out. And I really have a hard time managing that for Brazil. Oscar is great when on, but all too often Hulk and Fred are just kind of functional players.
2. 3-5-2 baby! Some people seem to think that the proliferation of the formation stems from international teams playing more dual striker formations (so that the 3 CBs are a needless numerical mismatch in the middle). I don't know. I think there's a way to play it against the 4-2-3-1. I love how Costa Rica plays it situationally, because it allows them alternate between EXTREMELY energetic high pressing and then defending deep. I also love that Martinez is such an advocate for the formation for ESPN. I honestly believe that this the formation of the future for the US.
3. Traditional wingers are out. While I've seen goals come from wide areas, they're almost never coming from crosses from the wide areas. They're coming from pull backs from the box. And most goals, it seems to me, are coming through the middle. There are still uses for the entire width of the pitch, particularly as an easy outlet against the press, but it seems that the only way scores are coming from crosses are on early crosses from fullbacks like Aurier, or when a defender makes a bad mistake (Cameron, Bhoy).
4. The ball. I think it's had an effect. Both 2006 and 2010, the buzz was that they were trying to build a ball that would really take off and do some knuckling. It was supposed to make it hard on keepers, but it made it even harder on offensive players. The Brazuca seems to fly true. That's meant fewer free kick goals (and more well-struck free kicks that keepers seem to see right away), but that's been more than balanced out by the ball doing what attackers mean it to do.

You cannot separate his his actions in one jersey from the other. They are all on the field. They all count the same. Everyone agrees that this 4 month ban took into consideration his previous chompings. Those were in Ajax and Liverpool shirts though. So if you are separating all that, then maybe it is Uruguay that is getting the shaft here. Silly right? Right.
I agree that it is crazy that he will make $3mil during the ban. This is like forcing Donald Sterling to cash his 2 billion dollar check.

As expected the US Germany game broke the WatchESPN record again.
The overnight TV rating was the lowest for a US game so far at 6.3 but with a 12:00am eastern start time, that number is pretty remarkable.

Speaking of TV ratings, if the US can some how pull out a win against Belgium, they look to be scheduled on Saturday at 4:00pm eastern for the quarter final game.
If that is against a big name like Argentina and Messi, this game should break the US Portugal games record for most watched soccer game ever.

If there was I don't think he would have signed a 4 year deal back in December. Unless something really weird happens, I think he is the coach through 2018.

I am going to go with no. He lives in the US (socal), has been given the keys to revamp the entire us soccer system, He's married to an American woman... I would be surprised if he left, esp for Turkey.

on paper, teh Belgian players are much better as individuals than the US players- they are playing big roles on big teams in big leagues.
