***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (2 Viewers)

yeah, I really don't think the 'heat' and 'humidity' are going to be very big factors.

Beside the fact these guys are world class athletes....this is winter time in Brazil - the hottest month's are december/january.

Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza are all coastal cities. It's not as if these cities are in the heart of the Amazon jungle ffs.

It will be warmish and there will be humidity, but it's not going to be overbearing. Not to mention that qualifying games are what, 3 games spread over 10-11 days?

This has been addressed ad nasuem on other boards I follow a lot closer than I do the soccer threads at fbg.
So why did they decide to add water breaks at set times in each half? After the confederation cup last year, teams looked gassed.

This will be an issue for some teams.
They do water breaks for Dutch games in early season too

I just don't think it will be that big an issue. Maybe as the tournament goes on it may be tougher.
Average temperature in Amsterdam in August is 63 - if they need water breaks for that kind of weather, they are not going to be happy in Brazil...

By game 3, I think the northern European teams are going to be feeling the effects.
2010 is the only WC a European team has won outside of the continent. It isn't going to happen again in Brazil, IMO.

What I think or what I would play? Here is my best guess.

Iker

Azpilicueta Ramos Pique Alba

Busquets Xabi Alonso

Xavi

Silva Iniesta

Costa

Xavi's role is largely free. Wouldn't shock me to see Pedro take Silva's spot too. Cesc could end up in either Xabi Alonso's or Costa's role.

I was thinking about this formation today...only it was

Fab Cameron Besler DMB

Jones Beckerman

Zusi Bradley Dempsey

Jozy

That would be a very tough team to beat

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...FIFA awarded the World Cup to a country where we just turned loose Al-Qaeda dudes? Or conversely, we just turned loose Al-Qaeda dudes into a country hosting a World Cup?

I think that takes away two big assets. Bradley's motor and Deuce's poaching. Having Bradley just playmaking strikes me as just as reductive as just having him as a 6. He needs to get on the ball all over the field. Even if I were inclined to move Deuce away from goal, I'd put either Bacon or Mix behind the striker.

I think it conserves Bradley's motor, he can still track back...get the ball out from the back and go create chances.. If he has to track back in the diamond, with the amount of space that creates and create all of our chances...he'll be dead out there. True, it does take aways from Dempsey's poaching, but it gets him on the ball more often which is a huge positive for a team lacking creativity. Jones/Beck can provide cover for the fullbacks getting forward and it would be a very difficult formation to counter against.

If part of the deal is that those dudes have to work a year or two building those stadiums in Qatar, I think that'll probably be punishment enough.

Can't see any way Cesc plays that deep.
Spain becomes closer to a 4-1-4-1 and less of a double pivot when Cesc plays. I still think Xabi Alonso would be the most likely player dropped.
I just think Xabi is more likely to be dropped for Xavi or Javi. Cesc is not good at defending or positional awareness.

I could see this though:

Sergi

Xavi Iniesta

Cesc

Works with a front of Costa and Pedro. Becomes more of a False 9 than 4-4-2 with Silva or Mata in instead of Costa.

If we go back to the 4-2-3-1, I'd rather see Bradley back with Jones, and Mix as a LM, with the ability to cut inside as the playmaker - that would put some onus on Bradley/Jones to help cover the left side on defense, since I don't see Mix helping much more than being a gnat.

Wait... I thought the water breaks were for Qatar... they're for Brazil?
three new items this summer

1) Goal cams

2) Spray for free kicks

3) Water breaks

It was the Italian coach, Pandelli, who pushed FIFA for this after seeing his team almost die in the Brazil heat during the last Confed Cup.

I have not seen seen exactly how they will implement the water breaks but I assume it will be during either an injury or throw in around the mid point of each half.

Do they get orange slices too?

How are you guys doing the scoring for your pool? I was going to do 3 points for a win and 1 for a tie in the group stage and then go to 6,9,12, and 15 points per win in the knockout rounds, but doesn't that essentially mean whoever drafted the team that ultimately wins is virtually assured victory? Maybe 4,5,6,7 points per win in the knockout rounds instead?

Helpful, thanks. Mine is a little different in that teams were drafted rather than operating like an NCAA pool in which people can have the same teams, so I believe that requires different scoring.

I know these are just friendlies but still Greece has to be wondering. 3rd straight game tonight they did not score. They drew with Nigeria who obviously decided not to throw one in their own net tonight in Philly.

Ghanian witch doctor claims responsibility for Ronaldo's 'injury'.

A traditional priest from Ghana has said that he is behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury problems, which “can never be cured by any medic”.

The Real Madrid and Portugal star is suffering from tendonitis and is set to miss out on his country’s pre-World Cup friendlies against Mexico and Ireland, though Nana Kwaku Bonsam, who describes himself as a traditional priest, has claimed responsibility for the Ballon d’Or winner’s plight, which he has claimed to be “spiritual”.

“I know what Cristiano Ronaldo’s injury is about, I’m working on him,” the witchdoctor told Ghanaian radio station Angel FM.

“I am very serious about it. Last week, I went around looking for four dogs and I got them to be used in manufacturing a special spirit called ‘Kahwiri Kapam’.

“I said it four months ago that I will work on Cristiano Ronaldo and rule him out of the World Cup or at least prevent him from playing against Ghana and the best thing I can do is to keep him out though injury.

“This injury can never be cured by any medic, they can never see what is causing the injury because it is spiritual. Today, it is his knee, tomorrow it is thigh, next day it is something else.”

Ghana are due to play Portugal on June 26 in Brasilia, in what will be their final match of Group G, which also includes Germany and USA.
