Quick thoughts on a pool I'm trying to throw together-

Eight owners draft four teams, $25 fee

Payouts-

$5 group winners

$5 1st ko round winners

$10 quarters winners

$15 semis winners

$50 finals winners

Simple enough? Better ideas for a simple last minute pool?

Breaking it another way

Getting the champion gets you $80 or $85

Getting the runner up gets you $30 or $35

Getting a losing semi-finalists gets you $15 or $20

Getting a losing quarter-finalists gets you $5 or $10

If you have a group winner who loses in round one you get $5.

Fun format, but seems like it could be a little top heavy. The 8th pick guy is probably boned a little too hard by this set up IMO but that could just be me.

Though an auction format with real $ could be interesting :) You just change the total by % if it's over/under the $200 total ;)

Sao Paulo’s transit workers strike one week before World Cup

SOCCER

BY SCOOBY AXSON

Subway and overland commuter train operators have gone on strike in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the city that’s hosting the World Cup’s opening match, meaning fans might have to find another way to the stadium, reports the Associated Press.

Workers are looking for a 10 percent increase in pay, while the company that runs the subway system is offering an 8.7 percent pay increase.

More than four million people use the transit system everyday in Sao Paulo and many were not happy when they arrived on Thursday to find some stations closed, according to the report. Some commuters kicked down the metal barriers at two entryways and others jumped onto tracks protesting the closures.

What blogs are you all following for WC coverage? Looking for a couple dedicated to the USA team and the WC overall.

TIA

El Tri coach Miguel Herrera may have had his tongue planted firmly in his cheek when he said he didn't know who New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is, but he politely posed for a photo with the three-time Super Bowl winner after Mexico finished its practice ahead of Friday's friendly vs. Portugal at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

"He asked me for a photo. I don't know who he is nor whether he has won something but I made the kid's day," Herrera posted in Spanish on his Twitter account.

I don't know whether they are considered blogs or not but try and follow Grant Wahl and Ives Garlacep on Twitter. Both write a lot of US based articles.

I've only caught Men in Blazers a couple of times, but they are funny.

Because he is ignorant. I don't like ignorance. I could care less whether he likes the sport or not just have a modicum of intelligence.
I came into a thread and gave a very real answer:

Then I was attacked... Cry a little? Big tough guy soccer fan!

I did not attack you from that post, it was reasonable. You jumped off the deep end in this comment below. You even fixed the poll in your favor and you are no where near the 98% mark. Don't you feel kind of silly?

I'd say well over 90% of Americans would much rather go to a baseball game than a soccer game.

90% is generous for soccer too, as the real number is prob closer to 98%.

No bc it isn't difficult to look at team evaluations, attendance, tv ratings, jersey sales, and any relevant statistic that backs that up. Americans don't like soccer...

Do they dislike hockey too?

Andy... are there numbers available for the total number of Americans who watched a soccer match (MLS, Nats, Mexico, EPL -- all leagues) in the last year? Would be curious to see how that number stacks up with other sports outside the big three.

Already found a recent survey where 4% of the US said soccer it's favorite sport -- 4th best, ahead of the NHL at 3%

Also... percentage of people who self-report as "fans" generally...

NASCAR ~26%

NHL ~22%

Soccer ~19%.

No. Because so many games are friendlies no one keeps track of it. I could easily get you the MLS, US Nats, Mexican Nats type numbers but the million of friendlies by the Euro club teams, the Mexican club teams that sell out all over the country are much harder to come by. Sorry :(

Even with it, then you have the problem of average attendance vs total attendance.

For example little MLS by itself averages more fans per game than either the NBA or NHL but that is a poor marker since the NBA and NHL both have more games at higher ticket prices.

It is not an easy comparison to make.

All I think we should be concerned with is the simple fact that the sport is significantly more popular today than it was 8 years ago and it will be more popular 8 years from now.

Wow but it makes sense.

If memory serves Bebeto was the very first sports player to do the baby curl celebration after scoring in the WC in 1994.
I remember him doing that in 94. Damn that was 20 years ago! f me
I was so young, free and happy.

I got engaged shortly after the WC. Damn wifey :)
Had just finished my senior season in college.

Sadly had missed the pickup game vs Hagi and Romania a few weeks before...

I remember someone threatening to create a master list of players missing the WC due to injury... did that ever happen? I would love to see it if so.

Might have been answered earlier but is there any free online streams of the game? I have directv at home but for the non us games during the week I will try watching via computer.

ESPN3 showing them for free? Other sites? Thanks
