Talk to me like I'm not a lawn man (I pay a guy).

How does a turf that has never been played on look like that?
Put down sand for laying turf.Lay turf.

Watch turf die.
It's in a rain forest. Manaus gets 90" of rain per year, over 1 1/2 times average rainfall in Miami
Everything came in via boat. Up the Amazon River. They needed Amazon.com bots to deliver stuff, instead they may as well have used pack mules to each bring a piece of sod.

Hard to grow new turf in a hurry, remote, hot, possible lack of expertise, new venue, etc.
In a hurry?
Probably laid the sod last week - this WC, from an organizational standpoint, as been nothing short of a cluster####. It may actually be that Qatar is better organized - they at least have no compunctions about killing people to get cities built, so they can have host cities.
Do you think the protests will inspire match fixing? Things will get ugly maybe even if Brazil wins but I geniunely fear for Brazil if they don't.

Lets just say, I don't think there is any chance on God's green earth that Brazil does not make it out of the group. There is a very good chance they will receive favorable calls up through the finals - at least until FIFA has managed to get all of their money out of the country.

I don't think we'll see anything as dramatic as an opposing goals throwing the ball into his own net :cough: Nigeria :cough: but, I expect Brazil to be in the semi-finals for certain.

You don't exactly need to invoke a conspiracy to expect the best team to reach the semi-finals with a home field advantage.

I am not saying they will need it, just that they will get the edge they need - if required.

I just love that Italy and England probably have 60 beautiful stadiums combined in their countries and they have to play on that cow pasture. Unreal.

Advancement based on points in the group stage 1998-2010:

9 points (trivial): 10 advanced, 0 did not

7 points (trivial): 16 advanced, 0 did not

6 points: 11 advanced, 0 did not

5 points: 15 advanced, 0 did not

4 points: 11 advanced, 12 did not

3 points: 1 advanced, 17 did not

2 points: 0 advanced, 7 did not

1 point (trivial): 0 advanced, 17 did not

0 points (trivial): 0 advanced, 11 did not
I'll bet my bottom dollar this was Italy. Those ####ers always seem to squeeze through the group stage by the skin of their teeth.

Fuuuuuu.... I can remember the wettest year on record in New Orleans (80 inches or so) and it seemed we were going to float away. That's a massive amount of rain.

I thought that too when somebody posted it... oof- for the last WC... but IIRC, it wasn't the wops.

Other random WC Group trivia:

1. Since 1998, three teams have had a positive goal differential, but not advanced, name them.

2. Since 1998, three teams have had a negative goal differential, but have advanced, name them.

Almost 9 out of 10 Croatians, whose football team takes on Brazil at the opening of the World Cup on Thursday, said they would rather watch the contest than have sex. A poll by local polling agency Ipsos Puls said 88 percent of Croats would prefer to watch the live TV coverage than have a passionate night with their lover. The poll was done among 1,000 married people aged from 30 to 50. Many said they would give up sex for a month if it was a choice between that and watching the World Cup final on TV. Thirty percent said they had purchased a second TV set to make sure there were no disruptions during the World Cup if the first set broke. Croatia's best World Cup result was 3rd place in 1998 in France.

Well, yeah. Sex with the old lady is 10 times better than a WC match but the game lasts 30 times longer.

I've always wondered how offensive others considered this word to be.

I feel like if we're going to do this thread the way it should be done ('Murica), we need an official list of FBG approved racial slurs.

For newbies, casuals and hard core, I highly recommend reading this article. It is a wonderful break down of the three friendly US games leading into the World Cup with lots of pictures and diagrams showing the flaws and strengths in the US tactics and performance.

Nice. Really like that 4-3-2-1 type set up.

This will sound crazy, but when I'm trying to solve a problem or I'm working on a data set and hit on a new solution there's a physical sensation (hard to describe) that goes with it if it's correct. Some sort of intuition I guess.

I don't know much anything about tactics, but when I see that set up there's a palpable sense that it fits together correctly.

Hoping we see more of it in the WC.

In my World Cup random team selection I did with 3 other friends:

Argentina, Italy, Uruguay, USA, Mexico, South Korea, Iran, and Algeria.

Some real stinkers in there, but at least I got Argentina.

Any realistic shot for Italy or Uruguay?

whoa... some analysts in the UK, including Lawro, is backing the US to make it out of group, at Portugal's expense... interesting... and all are basing it on a belief in Klinsmann.
