Apparently "pre-game coverage" on ESPN3 is just a live feed of the almost-empty stadium where the game will happen. Right now they're playing One Direction, though, so there's that.

a couple of people rolling around and clutching their shin like the old school fifa games on sega genisis
and some awesome chanting

It is not a friendly rivalry at all. The two sets of fans pretty much hate each other. BigSoccer.com has to put all sort of protection in place when the two sides play each other because of the constant trolling, sniping and downright ugliness that occurs.
It is arugably one of the stronger rivalries in internatinal soccer which is amazing considering the rivalry did not even start until the early 90's.
The only reason to root for Mexico is the Concacaf connection and the possible protection of WC Qualifying spots.

Meh, I think they're viewed comparable to a younger stepbrother. We treat them like crap, try to stop them for joining our fun, and make fun of them all the time. But they're our punch bag, dammt, and nobody else better pick on them.

The rumors are true. Javier Hernandez is not starting for Mexico.
