So as a soccer newbie, should anything have come of that ball hitting that guy's hand off the deflection in the box?
Mexico is a bad call or fluke goal from getting totally hosed here.
Just got away with a handball - if that had been against Brazil, it would have been a straight red and PK.
Unfortunately handball has become like a catch in the NFL, noone really knows what it is...

To me it was away from his body and deflected a shot. PK

To some it was too close, "ball to hand", could not get it out of the way and unintentional. No PK.
If it was against Brazil, clear PK - it was a close call, definitely deflection, but also hand away from body, which is usually called.

well deserved win by the messkins there. looked like the mexico of older days, moving the ball quickly and making smart runs. very tactically sound as well.

Spain team v Holland: Spain team: Casillas, Azplicueta, Piqué, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Busquets, Alonso, Xavi, Silva, Iniesta, Diego Costa

Holland team: Cillessen, Vlaar, De Vrij, Martins Indi, Blind, De Jong, Janmaat, De Guzman, Van Persie, Sneijder, Robben

I'm not as familiar with the Dutch XI as I am used to being in these tournaments - several unknowns.
watched them play a few weeks ago... surprised by how young, quick and strong they were. don't think sneijder or robben played in that one.

for me it's if the hand is away from his body and making himself "bigger"- gaining advantage.

this one seemed like the hand was trailing behind- granted, away from his body- and took a deflection to hit it. I don't think he was making himself bigger, so no PK for me.
Can understand that as well. Just too much gray area with how they keep changing the rules, much like a catch in the nfl

I doubt the World Cup credentials of any team starting Concrete Ron Vlaar.
yeah... you'd have to be Blind to get behind that team.

I am rooting for Spain, because I like their team, but I am also hoping LVG bombs in the WC, just to give the United fans something to think about for next season...

Any chance Holland tries to play or are we looking at the WC 2010 final again?
I think they try to emulate the Brazil (confed cup) and Bayern approach- high pressure, run yourself into the ground on both sides of the ball and try to maintain as much possession as possible.

Christo's guy almost scored for Cameroon. That would have been something.

Taylor And Ruud. That's like having Al Bundy sitting beside Walter Payton.
well said cant click enough "likes"
I never liked Ruud that much- and seems more like Twellman than unlike. Johnny-on-the-spot type players (yeah, Nistelroy with more skills) who run around a bit and score some goals, but don't overwhelm with exciting ball skills.
Always been a fan of RUUUUDDDDD!

Excellent goal scorer, not a messi or ronaldo type but if you needed a goal he was one you felt would get it. Very few with that quality

agreed. Deserved the win.
Best they have looked in a long time. Very well deserved win and should have been by more.
makes it tougher for Croatia to get through.
I don't see Croatia sitting back the way Cameroon did. We'll see what mexco can do with some pressure- they haven't seemed to handle it for a long time... but maybe this one game with some time under Herrerra is more indicative of where they're going than where they've been.

there are no americans outside mcbride that i felt could score an important goal like ruud. (not a LD fan, but he did come up big at times)

Never really paid much attention to Twellman. and Now I wish I could get him off my screen. So bad

Yep - reading elsewhere that he voted for the US after the first-round - not sure how accurate. I know this is for failing to answer questions from the investigator - claiming he did not understand the questions in English.

Twellman never really played in big games or for a big club, so tough to say what he might have done (tbh, he wasn't really good enough to). But that guy scored a lot of goals of the unflashy variety- that's where my comparison lies.

The joke is that Twellman did it in MLS (like Bundy did it in high school), while Ruud did against the best players in the world.

Ironically, he speaks English quite clearly.

I agree. Really wish cough-cough FIFA or any FA would go in and retroactively throw the book at people who do this kind fo thing...

RIBEIRAO PRETO, Brazil — France’s Loic Remy has no sympathy for fellow striker and former club teammate Fred, and thinks he should be “punished” for the way he won a controversial penalty in Brazil’s 3-1 win against Croatia.

Fred went down in the penalty area under light contact from defender Dejan Lovren in the 71st minute, allowing Neymar to convert a spot kick that gave Brazil a 2-1 lead in Thursday’s World Cup opener.

Croatia’s players were furious with referee Yuichi Nishimura’s decision, with Lovren saying “we can give the World Cup directly to Brazil” as he struggled to contain his anger.

Remy said Friday that he thought Fred had hoodwinked Nishimura.

“He does it well, throws himself at the right time because you can see that there’s no foul at all. Lovren doesn’t pull him back,” said Remy, who played two seasons with Fred for Lyon from 2006-08. “Experience comes into it, and it’s important to fall at the right time. For me, the striker should be punished for this kind of wrongdoing.”

Ahh. makes sense. Ruud did have some flash, but mostly he was a pure scorer at the highest levels.

I agree. Use the NHL flopping rule as an example.

BTW, funny post coming from someone named El Floppo. :lmao:

I agree with the premise here - and it would not offend the senses if Fred were to be suspended (he won't be) - but even if such a system was in play, this was not so blatant that it would generate a suspension, imo. There was contact - Lovren's hand was on Fred, when Fred fell - so its harder to retroactively decide that the contact had nothing to do with the fall.

I saw a much more blatant dive by a Mexican player late in todays game - just trying to draw a foul, not a penalty though.
