I was already guessing 4 minutes because of the actual injuries (like Beasley) that took up time. No issues with it being 5 minutes.
How do you know they added a minute for Zusi coming off slowly?

Also I noticed that when our last sub was coming on that the board the guy was holding up suddenly had a red 5 on it (i.e. I'm sure that was the reason).

Based on how they've played, Ghana should be the team sitting pretty with Germany right now, not the US.
Portugal- even after scoring the goal- looked like they thought their WC was over. They need to score a bunch of goals more than Ghana and hpe that GErmany does the same to the US to move on. Cards are stacked massively against them... even though it's certainly possible.

Obviously they're a very highly ranked team, with lots of experience, right? What are their strengths and weaknesses? How do we match up against them? What realistic chances do we have for a win or at least a draw?

I guess it depends on what you consider a blow out. We only have 2 gd advantage on Ghana.
If they win by 2 and we lose by 1, they go through.

The board had the numbers of the player coming off going and on (Zusi/Gonzo) before any number had been added for time allowed. THe first number of time added was 5, I don't believe it was ever changed.

They don't need to win by two necessarily. 2:1 will give them the goals scored tiebreaker.

Odds have it that the most likely scenario is we lose to Germany and Portugal beats Ghana. Portugal is -4 on goal differential They have a lot of goals to cover. We also have GD on Ghnana. We are looking better than any other team in this group than Germany, and that is only if we rate Germany on there rankings, not on how they played yesterday (when they were very drawable)

That assumes US gets shut out I think. If the US loses 2-1, and Ghana wins 2-1 then the US goes through on the head to head tie breaker.

I think Ghana will be hard pressed to win by two, assuming that Portugal shows up. As impressive as they've been (and they've been impressive). Ghana has shipped goals this tournament. Two in each game. Against Germany, they allowed plenty of chances. And they'll be chasing goals. I think Ghana will give up a goal.

The US has scored exactly 2 goals in 6 straight games (and in 7 of 8 this entire calendar year).
I thought your 2:1 comment meant 2 for them and 1 for USSeems the key is US can't be outscored by 2 by Ghana. Well, maybe not as GD is more important.

Love the quantity and diversity of banter in here, even if theres a whole lot of crazy. 
What an incredble match. Really proud of our guys. Special shout out to Demarcus Beasely who looked like he was 18 again running down the flanks. Loved how Klinsmann let his fullbacks attack the wings and break down the Portugal Defense. Fab was again terriffic. For the life of me I dont know why Portugal didnt press us, as it played to our strengths.
I hope Klinsmann and Low go out for dinner on Wednesday and settle this off the field In true FIFA fashion.

Again, I don't know much about soccer, but it seemed to me that Portugal was playing it back after scoring the first goal and US had a bunch of chances. Is this similar to 'prevent' defense in football? If so, it seems like when a team is playing that way it burns them. Why wouldn't a team play aggressive all game? Is it to keep from getting tired?
When Portugal was down 1 they picked up the pace and seemed to have a lot more chances.

Unlike football, defense turns to offense very quickly in soccer. One reason why teams defending a lead tend to concede some possession to a team chasing a goal is because a the counter-attack is an extremely effective offensive strategy. In fact, it's how Portugal prefers to play in the first place, because that's Ronaldo's game.

Yes, very much to do with tiring. 90min with only one break is a long time time to keep up energy levels
They are out of the WC if they lose, so going down one i s likely to be a spark to the team

Bradley had a poor first match and he seemed out of gas early into the 2nd half. After his deflected shot in the early 2nd half, his passes were not crisp and he was walking a lot in the defensive third when he could have been challenging. He still had some good plays, but I expected more from him based on past performances. He controls the pace and direction of the team. Maybe the humidity got to him.

They didn't close up shop. There's a difference between bunkering (prevent) and being more careful. They were better offensively on the front foot, but they also allowed the second US goal.
Jones' goal was pretty amazing. Their tactics were effective at forcing shots from distance up to 1:1.
In the end, they still had more possession.
