Columbia looks good, they might win it all.
Runners up in 83
I trained with a group of those players I was in high school and a kid from my town, Todd White, was the captain of that great run for Columbia (they were good for a few years).

I remember specifically one guy because he it was so sad what happened.

He was a freshman from Jamaica. As much of an athlete as you will ever see with a perfect name, Solomon Gale. He was pretty much the best player I had ever seen up close like that, just a whole other level from anything I had seen and I came from a top town that produced good players. He was at the very top of the freshman class across the country.

One day he saw this tether ball set up that was extremely high. He went up and biked it, and fell and hurt his back :( They say he was never the same again after that.

I knew Solomon! He was still in NYC in my days and came to games and was friends with a teammate of mine from Jamaica with his own perfect name- Kingsley Chin. I've never even heard the name Todd White. Amr Aly won the Herman that year, always assumed he or Solo were the captain of the team. That team was undefeated and untied IIRC, losing in overtime... Heartbreaking. My team never made it out of the round of 16- also heartbreaking.

Never heard that story about Solomon. Did Chris Ziade, also from Jamaica, go to that high school for a year?

I'm no longer speaking of this as a great World Cup, instead, all time great sporting event.
one thing is clear.

If you were not a troll/basher and were generally interested in giving the sport a chance, and you still found you did not like it after watching any non Iran-Nigeria game, then it is safe to say you are likely never to enjoy the sport. It rarely comes better than this at the international level.
I been giving it a chance but there's a lot to dislike. Entire teams swarming a ref after a missed call including the Italian keeper running halfway down the field to argue. I don't care if he's the captain the other 11 guys are complaining enough. How many calls have been changed because an entire team argued a call? And it happens at least once a game. Diving happens every game, ok, but the on the ground theatrics and injury faking was terrible in the Italy Uruguay game. It was certainly an exciting end to that game, really fun to watch. Didn't see the end of the Greece game but was this really the "foul" that gave them the W https://twitter.com/dejan_kovacevic/status/481561673124552705

No, that's a Vine that starts after the foul that caused him to kick the ground.

:lmao: You try walking while I kick your leg and see what happens. It was an unfortunate foul but if you clip a guys leg into his other leg, it is a foul and not surprising he fell. Calling that a dive is a joke.

I just. I have nothing left.

I wish nothing but the worst for the Uruguay national team forever. I hope all of the players have nice long great club careers. Except Luis Suarez. And I mean that.

It will not be forgotten.

Try watching a little more of the clip: Yes, it was a "foul"

Really trying to figure out if I want to catch up on this thread, or just move on with my life. I guess tis is a true test of boredom….

I know tis has to have been covered here, but I've been busy...

I defended Saurez at the bar today. At the first bar when it was live. The only angle I saw was from the back. It had to be just a headbutt to me. Worst case, his teeth got in the way and Chiellini tried to sell it knowing Suarez's reputation. I just couldn't believe he would bite someone AGAIN! I really just couldn't believe it. It wasn't until the next bar (with a lot of whiskey and beach in between :bowtie: ) that I saw the other angles. Wow.

Also might have been covered: I don't think anything happens to him suspension-wise. From what I understand FIFA has a strict "if it isn't in the ref's report, there is nothing to investigate" stance. Anyone have a different take with something to back it up?

Todd White was their left back and captain the year they went to the final 4. He was arguably the best player ever to come out of my home town, at least until Mac Steeves (the kid we talked about a couple of years ago in this thread) emerged. I played with Amr one summer at a camp but I don't remember the name Chris Ziade but there were a bunch of players there at that camp as instructors so he might have been one of them.

Amr did not win the Herman in 83. He won it a year later in 84. He was also on the US Olympic team that year if memory serves.

Memory fades as I get older :( . The Columbia coach was there but damn if I can remember his name(Deiter Fincken something, crap I am so old). I remember he was fuming when they told him what Solomon did.

I remember thinking it was so cool playing with players who were in Sports Illustrated (as you know back then was the dark ages, any mention in a major magazine was incredible).

All FIFA officially said was that they were going to investigate it. Had this been his first offense, it would have been swept under the table but this was blatant repeated stupidity beyond anything Pepe could dream up, and the twitter pictures of his teeth marks are not helping his cause.

I am interested to see if anything happens.

I think that is cool. You gave it a decent shot, you don't like it. Nothing wrong with that.

I much prefer people who at least give it a chance and then decide they don't like. At least you are talking from an educated point of view, something that typical troll or basher has no interest in doing.

As I said though, if you don't like it now, you will never really like the sport. This is as good as it gets imo, at least internationally.

Dieter Ficken. The worst coach I ever had... Literally learned nothing from him.

Chris Ziade was my year, so younger than that group that went to the finals. I thought I remembered that he went to a post HS prep school for a year in New England somewhere before he came to CU..

Thanks for the update. Please keep us posted. I'll PM you my cell so I don't miss anything.

Also, :bye:

Go back to watching American athletes argue with refs if that's what you prefer. Or pretend it doesn't happen if you prefer that. Your call. Sports are like Burger King: You can have it your way. At least you'll have the commercial breaks to process things.

all athletes everywhere complain about calls. weird thing to be bothered by in soccer. Hell, it made John McEnroe a legend.

This would be a riot to see how FIFA would handle this if it came to a fruition. A 3-0 forfeit to Portugal would suck.

And yes, it always seems to be an African team

The national team of Ghana threat miss Portugal game, for having not yet received monetary awards for participation in the World. Ghanaian President is now trying to resolve the impasse.

The national team of Ghana threat miss Portugal game, scheduled for Thursday, the 2nd was reported by Ghanaian portal My Joy Online, on Tuesday.

At issue is the alleged non-payment of premiums for participation in the World Cup 2014 by the Ghana Football Association to players.

Ibrahim Sannie Daara, spokesman for the agency confirmed, according to the same publication, that "the players did not receive a penny since they arrived and patience is running out." The payment should have been done two weeks ago.

Each player has to receive about 73 thousand euros and athletes intend the payment to be made in "cash in hand" and not by bank transfer. Players, moreover, have missed the workout scheduled for this Tuesday, in protest at the lack of payment.

John Mahama, Ghana president has come into contact with the players, via phone, seeking to resolve the situation in time for the decisive match in Group G, the result of which will be irrelevant in the accounts for the "Round" if Germany and USA tie.

What game did France forfeit in 2010 because of bonus payments not being paid?

WTF?

We are talking about bonus payments here. It happens almost every cup with African teams. It has nothing to do with race.

The France situation had absolutely nothing to do with bonuses not being paid.

Bringing race into this just makes zero sense to me. Hell it happened just before the World Cup with Cameroon too

I am not a soccer fan at all. Never watch outside of the World Cup. The World Cup, however, I love. Absolutely love it. I can't keep up with this thread because it moves too fast and most of it is over my head, but I try to check in when I have time and I learn some stuff. Keep it up. It's a great sport even if I can only get into it every four years. But I've gone from one of those soccer hater guys to learning to have a true appreciation of the game and I've watched almost every match, even finding streams to watch at work. The WC is just so much fun.

@FOXSportsLive: FIFA charges Luis Suarez for biting incident. If found guilty, rules call for a ban of at least 2 matches up to a max of 24 months.

Arsene is on beIN's wrap-up show, I hadn't checked it out until tonight. Pretty solid. No puffy coat though.

Sorry for ####### noob questions, but what's the "Euro" thing they reference a couple of times in the WC fantasy thread? Like the WC only just Europe? Is it fun?

Every region has a regional championship.

Every 4 years, Europe runs theirs. It is a WC like tournament but only includes Euro teams. It is a very high quality tournament.

In 2016 there are going to be 2 massive tournaments

Euro 2016 and the 100th Anniversary of Copa America

Copa America is South Americas regional championship. But they are doing something special for the 100th and including North America. The US will be hosting the event. It is likely to be massive.

Yes and very yes

It's a higher concentration of talent. You don't get Brazil, Argentina and the like, but you don't get Australia, the Asians or other not quite up to the top levels.

Yes

European Championships are every 4 years, but alternate with the WC. Similar style of tournament with just European teams. Spain won in 2008 and 2012, along with winning the WC in 2010.

2016 should also be cool with an expanded Americas Cup that basically includes North, Central, and South American teams and the US will host.

Sorry for ####### noob questions, but what's the "Euro" thing they reference a couple of times in the WC fantasy thread? Like the WC only just Europe? Is it fun?
Yes and very yes

It's a higher concentration of talent. You don't get Brazil, Argentina and the like, but you don't get Australia, the Asians or other not quite up to the top levels.
I think the 16 team Euro was nearly perfect.

I fear the expansion to 24 teams is not going to work. 24 teams is such an awkward number because some 3rd place teams in groups advance.

Massive is European for really big

Question - how many goals off of free kicks are scored by about this time in WC tournaments? I can remember one so far this WC. That seems incredibly low.

Instead of the Greece game I ended up watching Colombia. Yeah - they're good.

I don't remember seeing a stat for it in previous tournaments but I agree it seems low as well.

Ironically the shaving cream line should have helped.

That being said, there have been plenty of set piece goals so far this tournament.
