if you're important to your company and you get arrested and locked in jail, then yes your employer will be hurt in the same way that Suarez's club team was employed for actions they had no control over.

if you're a lawyer and do something on your own time that gets you disbarred, the law firm you work for would probably suffer as well.

This is getting weird. Let's say that FIFA didn't suspend him from club activity, do you at least agree that the Premiere League (or the English FA) should have had authority to ban him? Liverpool is not a solely independent financial actor. They rely on other employers in the English FA (and in other leagues with respect to the CL). Those other employers have every right to say, "Luis Suarez tarnishes the image of our league, so we will punish him." If Liverpool doesn't want to be subject to what FIFA, or the FA, or the EPL has to say about its employees, then Liverpool can become an independent barn-storming soccer team that doesn't play in any FIFA sanctioned leagues.

How about this one? I do my job Monday through Friday 8-4:30. On Saturday, I go to volunteer at a local hospital. On Saturday, I am not in my normal mode as M-F employee. I do something bad there. What happens? I don't get allowed to come back as a Saturday volunteer anymore. I don't get banned from work. That's the only point that I am making. If that makes me a Liverpool whiner in Sinn Fein's book, I really could give two ####s.

Why should Africa get the same number of slots as CONMEBOL? And Asia at 4.5 is at least 0.5 too many. Simply put, they were fodder in the tourney.

Politics - 52 teams/votes in Africa - 1 in 10 make it.

Asia - growing market - 43 teams - 1 in 8 make it - the 0.5 is to reflect that Oceania should really just join Asia, and get 5 slots.

CONMEBOL - 10 teams - just can't see adding a 6th team, or even a half a team here.

If CONMEBOL and CONCACAF ever joined forces then I would see 10 slots possible. That would give them a combined 45 countries compared to 53 for UEFA.

Once again, that answer is generally different depending on who you work for. If your employer is not a member of a voluntary association, the decision should be your employer's (but the employer has no obligation to keep you on). If your employer is the New England Patriots, the Houston Rockets, or Liverpool Football Club, that decision is not solely your employer's.

This is because your employer's participation in a voluntary association (which is what all sports leagues are) is conditioned upon the acceptance of the authority of those who control the association to issue discipline).

I think you are missing the point that he was effectively "arrested and punished" by FIFA here - the governing body.

If he just bit someone on the beach, it probably makes the news, but I doubt FIFA gets involved. Here he bit a player on the field. FIFA controls actions on the field, and said - NO Futbol for you. 4 Months.

That is the same as if you bit someone and got thrown in county lockup for 4 months. Your actions will hurt your family, your employer, etc.

I think you are missing the point that he was effectively "arrested and punished" by FIFA here - the governing body.

That is the same as if you bit someone and got thrown in county lockup for 4 months. Your actions will hurt your family, your employer, etc.

Football clubs (and people) should be held to what they've agreed to.

This is probably better posted in the soccer thread but while driving home from my mother in laws, I was listening to sports radio and they actually had a relatively intelligent non bashing conversation about soccer.

Neither host liked the sport but both were being intelligent about it. One was even smart enough to explain to the other that you just can't look at MLS when thinking about soccer in the country, that it goes so far beyond that.

I know we are not yet at a tipping point and probably still need another 15 years for the old bashers/trolls to disappear but the general tone towards the sport has changed significantly over the last 8 years.

Hopefully we can be saying the same 8 years from now.

I agree with this take, and it's also my biggest issue with the verdict. I wouldn't have had an issue with the 4 months of total ban, with a lifetime ban from the national team, but this decision seems to be more to limit the losses for FIFA, while still appearing to come down hard on the player. (Not surprising, since it's FIFA).
