Decosta and Holmgren would be my two picks but neither of those guys would come here. Too much instability
I don't agree with the "instability" here. We have given angelo and previous coaches plenty of time, and we pretty much give our GM total power. I don't like Phillips, but once the GM is given initial restrictions and hired, it seems like he's pretty hands off until it blows up. I actually think the opposite, I believe ownership has proven that unless it's a total trainwreck they will overly give leeway, this is the first time they have pulled the plug this quickly and they did it with good reason.I really do think this is a GREAT landing spot for a GM, yeah he has work to do, but he will be given a lot of power for a GM to do that work. They really want their GM to be give the direction of the franchise and you won't get that a lot of other places. If they offer the proper money, I don't see any reason a GM won't come over.

They do empower their lower guys, all it takes is getting the correct one to move in a good direction.
You're giving them more credit than I do. Noth that it wasn't necessary but firing a GM after 3 years and coach after 2 doesn't indicate stability to me. I hope they get a good one, though.

Agreed. GMs love the idea of building or rebuilding from scratch. There's not much fun, nor credit, if the team is already close. A HC coach may opt for a destination like SF, but Chicago is a great place for a new GM.
What makes the Bears GM job attractive is that it is a historic franchise. And because the GM is remaining in Atlanta, SF, and Oakland there are really only two jobs open. The biggest drawbacks are Cutler and Ted Phillips. I think that Cutler will put off some of the head coaching candidates. So the GM will have a tougher time hiring a head coach. I don't believe that Ted Phillips will stay in the background. Having Phillips meddling is not an attractive prospect. And I wonder if the Bears front office will be able to allow the GM to do what he wants with Cutler. If he wants to trade him, will they allow that to happen?
I just don't think Ted Phillips has gotten in the way of much of the day to day activity for Emory or Angelo. It sounds like he's pretty hands off in that department besides the feeling that big contract numbers may have to get the rubber stamp from above, which given the Cutler contract, doesn't seem to be too hard to get. They let Emory hang himself without getting in the way until it was over and time to shut it down.

I know we don't like Ted Phillips in ANY football decisions, but once the GM is hired, I don't really think he is.

As far as culter, they backed away from him as far as possible in that press conference, both saying that he won't be any part of a new HC search as he has been in the past, and in regards to both Cutler and Marshall questions they clearly said the GM will have say to do with the roster as he pleases. They gave NO defense of Cutler at all.

They F'd up and pulled the plug on something that pretty much the entire league knows wasn't working. The GM wasn't even starting to close the talent gap to the rest of the division, the coach he hired had lost control of the team, and QB he signed to a large contract wasn't playing up to it. That is not instability, it's fixing a mistake before it gets any worse.

I don't think anyone in the league circles feels the Bears are an unstable team. Before this our head coaching tenures were 9, 5, 6 and 11 years. That's not Pittsburgh or anything like that, but it's got to be in the upper portion of the league. GM is a little stranger before Angelo because there wasn't always one, but he was there 11 years.

I do hope you are right about Phillips being kept to the finances and nothing football related. If they truly give the GM the control to make the football decisions that will be a very positive thing.

I really don't know what you do with Cutler. It is probably addition by subtraction to get rid of him. I think you could talk Buffalo in to taking him. But your GM has to have some alternate plan at QB. There has to be a rookie that the GM really likes, or one of the veterans he feels comfortable with. If the Bears played with Cutler this year the guarantee would only be $10 million in 2016, which would something other teams could probably swallow. Still, it would be nice to start fresh and send that headache to someone else.

I hear the names of guys from the Belichick coaching tree being bandied about. I want nothing to do with any of them. Their failure rate has been pretty thorough. McDaniels, Mangini, Weis, Cremmel, all those guys failed miserably. Bill O'Brien seems to be the first one that looks like he might succeed. Both McDaniels and Mangini are being mentioned as prospects who will be interviewed. I want nothing to do with McDaniels. He was a train wreck in Denver, and he didn't do much better as the OC in St Louis.

Does McDaniels come in and force another Cutler trade? Hmmmm.

I knew that Emery passed over Arians, but I didn't know the details until I read this article. http://www.sbnation.com/2014/12/30/7467853/bears-coaching-search-phil-emery-rod-marinelli-bruce-arians. I have to admit, I was drinking the Emery kool-aid but this really pisses me off. Emery, who's original background was in strength training and player personnel, asked one of the most knowledgeable and well respected coordinators in the game to evaluate the HC candidates. Marinelli recommends Arians who goes on to win coach of the year, but Emery disregards the recommendation, we lose Marinelli, and we get Tretsman. Imagine if we would have had Arians and Marinelli over the past two years and going forward.

According to CSN Chicago's John Mullin, Emery tasked Marinelli with interviewing head coaching candidates after Emery fired Lovie Smith at the end of the 2012 season. Marinelli reportedly narrowed down three choices in this order: 1) current Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, who Mullin said was the "runaway" first choice 2) Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and 3) Trestman, who was a distant third.
When he learned of the decision, Marinelli abruptly angrily resigned and left Halas Hall for Dallas and a de facto demotion to defensive line coach.

The problems did not end with Marinelli's exit. The exact level of Emery's involvement below the head-coaching job is unclear. With Marinelli gone, however, Emery was involved in hiring Mel Tucker as defensive coordinator and Joe DeCamillis

George and Teddy said they would consider hiring a coach before GM if they liked him. That screams instability. What GM doesn't want to pick their own coach? This organization is a mess right now and has been for decades. I hope they get lucky and the right GM falls into their laps.

Broncos OC Adam Gase is scheduled to interview Friday and Saturday for HC jobs with the 49ers, Falcons and Bears, per league source.

Who's he interviewing with? Not the GM!

Do you feel they did not give Phil Emory the control to make football decisions on this for this team the last three years? And if you do please give me an example, because I just haven't seen it.

There is only one case that I can think of and that was the requirement to keep Lovie Smith for year one. After that I honestly can't think of one example where they had any input.

I do not think it's correct to hire a coach before the GM and i think they made it clear that was not their preferece, but I do think if there are guys you and Accorsi think you may be interested in, it may not be a bad thing to have a sit down to show interest with. We are competing with teams that already have everyone in place and could hire on the spot. May not be a bad thing to show the bears job is there and a possibility for them also.

Now if they do hire the coach before the GM or force a coach on the GM I will take my place in line and bring some torches and pitchforks to share. But I'm not going to get up in arms until they do it.

I am worried about how close Accorsi has been to NFL operations since he has been out of the league for the past 7 years. Does he still know the best candidates or be able to find out who they are? The Bears can't whiff on the GM hire again. You can't draft like the Bears have over the past 10 years and expect to have prolonged success in the NFL.

Oh, I didn't know Accorsi has been away from a team for 7 years! On one hand, he may have a better feel for the overall landscape of the NFL and the coaching/GM talent throughout the league. On the other hand, he may have been bogged down in administrative NFL nonsense for the past 7 years and is out of touch with the current talent pool.

He's been on that league development panel that does biographies on potential coaches and management candidates, so hopefully that has kept him in touch with what is going on in the league. Bill Polian, who I thought would have been a better consultant for his success is on that same panel, so hopefully they have some similar knowledge.

Ah, good information. Based on his role with the league office I'm more confident in his insight/recommendations.

We almost got there (i.e. a competent management structure), but Phillips is still there to prtend he knows football.

I mean with these boobs interviewing coaches prior to hiring a GM it looks like just more of the same old moronic "Bears way" that has led to 1 championship in the last 50 or so years. Add the fact that their list stinks (less the Baltimore candidates, which they are never going to get), and you have just more of the same incompetence to expect in these choices by a President who always has a "fall guy".

I mean how many GM's does Phillips get? And I love how he put out in the news conference that Ernie suggested that if we find the right choice at coach we should hire him before the GM. I mean the guy is so sly, never his fault. If people don't see that they are just ignorant. It is clear ownership is ignorant by keeping Phillips in any type of a football decision capacity (versus just business, accounting and/or advertising).

I have been saying it since the GB debacle. Unfortunately, it seems this mantra will continue for another go-round.

Funny, Phillips can't even get his BS right. Says here that in talks with Accorsi the plan is not to hire a coach first.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/31/bears-lining-up-general-manager-candidates/

Well then why in the world are you interviewing coaches before hiring a GM Ted? Oh yeah, to show us how powerful and football savy you are? No thanks, had that fir the past 25 years, track record speaks for itself.

Who hires a consultant and then ignores his advice? Oh yeah, the Bears.

This infuriates me as a huge Marinelli fan. I'd actually take him back as head coach despite the 0-16 blemish. The guy is a big time football coach.

The fact that Phillps and McCaskey HAVE THE FINAL say here tells me the Bears are still no closer now than they were last year. The fact that these two business men will make the final call on who they fire as GM assures us of failure once again in 2015 and for years to come. Virginia's pissed but she should've fired Phillips as well.

The Bears cap space is surprisingly good for 2015 at $29,800,313. That's 8th best in the NFL. If they find a suitor for Cutler it'll be less. I would try to acquire Kurt Cousins if I were the Bears. QBs are hard to develop this day and age. Cousins would be a great pickup.

You should never hire a coach before a GM. It's the GMs call ultimately so that would be a shame. I could see the Bears screwing this up again.

I would just hire Theo and Jed if I were the Bears brass.

For real

Bears request permission for GM interviews w/ KCs Chris Ballard, Tenn's Lake Dawson, Balt's Eric DeCosta, Hou's Brian Gaine, NO's Ryan Pace

Haugh is on board with those of us who still view the Bears as dysfunctional and not an attractive job. We're past it being a good job just because it's the Bears. The image is tarnished.

I'm not trying to rain on anybody's parade, but as long as cutler's on the roster you guys are rearranging deck chairs.

edit: this is coming from a guy who figured the bears for last in their division with maybe 6 wins this past year

The reason the Bears need a consultant is because Phillips is still here. Fire this clown NOW! Prince George is not much of a business man . No sir - he is just a silver spooner living off the tradition of Papa Bear. They are just washing the same dirty rags passing on the best resources trying to outsmart the fans. As long as that boob Phillips is there telling Georgie that hiring a consultant is the way to go this stink will continue to fester. He is such a genius and a great business slash football mind that he has to hire a consultant after all these years of "experience" being a CEO. Clearly proof he has no idea about the NFL. As far as the " business" side - look at his disastrous choices at GM. Hybrid players on the field that don't work (Shea comes to mind) and a hybrid flunkie CEO in the executive suite. Hire a HC before a GM? Well the play on the field was just miserable so why not stop there. Let the front of the house have a shot at steering the Titanic. My goodness

So Boy George and Sweaty Teddy are interviewing coaches. Tell me exactly what they know about interviewing coaches without a GM

in the above linked article, Brad Biggs doesn't think it's such a bad idea to hit some initial interviews, and has a lot of the same reasons I talked about before. These guys aren't accepting jobs this week, but if you don't have initial sit down to show them there may be an opportunity, and you may have interest, you could lose a good candidate. I'm not saying hire a guy, or make a gm hire a guy, that would be horrible, and I'm back to providing the torches and pitchforks, but it's a first interview and sitdown with management. Not the end of the world.

Come on guys, just wait for them to #### it up before going meltdown. The brought in some football brains, and if they listen to his advice, they may actually find a competent candidate that could build this team.

Adam Gase interview request sent to Denver.

Boring...
Is he really the OC in Denver? or is Manning?
Manning is. This guy basically hit the lotto when Manning arrived. He could be good but he's a total unknown. Maybe he learned a lot when Manning would change the play he called at the LOS.

in the above linked article, Brad Biggs doesn't think it's such a bad idea to hit some initial interviews, and has a lot of the same reasons I talked about before. Not the end of the world.Come on guys, just wait for them to #### it up before going meltdown. The brought in some football brains, and if they listen to his advice, they may actually find a competent candidate that could build this team.
Briggs is not the only media expert presenting the idea that hiring a HC before a GM is a good path. Mike Mulligan wrote a piece in the Wednesday Tribune outlining the same concept. The comments from Mully's article were very telling. The football fans that get it ripped into him like a shark on its prey. The casual fan can care less. These are puff pieces that communicate the vision of ownership and the current direction. I hoped that it was going to be different but they are going back to the concept of keeping GM and HC salaries in check. The media experts are going to sell the cascade of chaos to keep their press credentials and the trips to the game day buffet. As the Rock would say - know your role and shut your mouth and smell what the ROCK IS COOKING

If Accorsi is involved in these interviews at least you have one person that knows about football. What McCaskey and Phillips know about football wouldn't fill a thimble. And what kind of impression does it give prospective hires that the Bears send these two idiots to be part of the interview, of to actually do the interview? And the idea that Phillips will just melt in to the background once the GM is hired seems hard to believe. George McCaskey is proving to be every bit as arrogant and stupid as his brother.

Let's hope, through some kind of blind luck, the Bears manage to hire a good GM and a solid coach. And let's hope, that while surrounded by morons, they can succeed. But the more news that comes out the less optimistic I get. It is truly sad that the job as head coach of the Bears has now slid to the point where the Raiders job is more attractive. I never imagined I would see the day when things fell apart this badly.

According to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, the Bears requested permission to speak with DeCosta on Wednesday, and the expectation is he will decline that request. According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, Phillips' role with the Bears would make it unlikely for DeCosta to want to work in Chicago.

It's very unrealistic to think Teddy will be more hands off. He's not that kind of guy. He's going down with the ship. I'm not convinced he even really cares much about the Bears. He's a huge ego that needs to feel like he's in control. Success be damned!

to be fair, DeCosta has been turning down interviews for the past couple of years after being named the heir apparent to Newsome. It's not like he's turning his nose up to just the Bears.

Why are fans (especially fantasy football fans) so shocked at poor NFL management? When you break it down, George didn't really do anything to deserve his position with the Bears. I compare it to a fantasy football owner inheriting an abandoned team that goes to the playoffs (and finishes in the money) What does that owner care what anyone else thinks? Other people may think he sucks at make personnel changes, but he still ends up making a little money every year.

Phillips and McCaskey are just playing at much higher stakes. As long as they make a profit every year, why should they change?

Again, where do you guys see Ted Philips interfering in football operations??? I just haven't seen it, I don't think he forced any draft choices or player signings he let Emory run this team. As I asked twistd can you give me an example where you see this happening?

Well, let's start with the fact that Ted Phillips is involved in the decision to hire a coach and a GM. He has no business making that decision. We don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but if Decosta is turning down the interview because of Phillips then it would seem he is not sold on Phillips fading in to the background. That is why they need a football czar that makes all the football decisions. Cut both George and Ted out of the equation.

The difference I see is the report saying why he will refuse the Bears. But you're right

Both Ravens ###'t GM Eric DeCosta and Vikings ###'t GM George Paton have told teams they are staying put. So 2 off the market, for now.

Ballard is a shoe-in for the Bears. He was with the Bears for years until 2013 and will be the easiest guy for George and Teddy to take. He's already gotten the job
