It is not about "on the field" football decisions ... It's is entirely about his inability to hire managers under him to competently make football decisions. As President that is part of his job, and those hires are "football decisions". He is not competent to make those hires. He has shown that, REPEATEDLY. That is the "football decision" problem with Ted Phillips.Again, where do you guys see Ted Philips interfering in football operations??? I just haven't seen it, I don't think he forced any draft choices or player signings he let Emory run this team. As I asked twistd can you give me an example where you see this happening? It's very unrealistic to think Teddy will be more hands off. He's not that kind of guy. He's going down with the ship. I'm not convinced he even really cares much about the Bears. He's a huge ego that needs to feel like he's in control. Success be damned! If Accorsi is involved in these interviews at least you have one person that knows about football. What McCaskey and Phillips know about football wouldn't fill a thimble. And what kind of impression does it give prospective hires that the Bears send these two idiots to be part of the interview, of to actually do the interview? And the idea that Phillips will just melt in to the background once the GM is hired seems hard to believe. George McCaskey is proving to be every bit as arrogant and stupid as his brother. Let's hope, through some kind of blind luck, the Bears manage to hire a good GM and a solid coach. And let's hope, that while surrounded by morons, they can succeed. But the more news that comes out the less optimistic I get. It is truly sad that the job as head coach of the Bears has now slid to the point where the Raiders job is more attractive. I never imagined I would see the day when things fell apart this badly.in the above linked article, Brad Biggs doesn't think it's such a bad idea to hit some initial interviews, and has a lot of the same reasons I talked about before. These guys aren't accepting jobs this week, but if you don't have initial sit down to show them there may be an opportunity, and you may have interest, you could lose a good candidate. I'm not saying hire a guy, or make a gm hire a guy, that would be horrible, and I'm back to providing the torches and pitchforks, but it's a first interview and sitdown with management. Not the end of the world.Come on guys, just wait for them to #### it up before going meltdown. The brought in some football brains, and if they listen to his advice, they may actually find a competent candidate that could build this team.So Boy George and Sweaty Teddy are interviewing coaches. Tell me exactly what they know about interviewing coaches without a GM

Uhh Hub, might want to go back and re-watch the tape on that one. JC wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire when the injury happened. I don't ever recall seeing anyone say that if Cutler plays the whole game the Bears win that game.Hub Arkush column:
the Bears were a Cutler knee injury away from beating the Packers and going to a Super Bowl in 2010.
Hub is so full of it. I remember hearing him on the radio with B&B and the trade was all sunshine and puppies. All 3 agreed that this was a franchise altering move for the good.documentation?Hub Arkush column:

Just saw report that they have no interest in Rex Ryan.Bears confirm that they interviewed Dan Quinn, Adam Gase for head coach
I am not a huge Hub fan. And Hub may be rewriting history as far as his feelings about the Cutler trade in the beginning. But I think his assessment of the Bears situation is pretty much spot on. On offense they need a right tackle. They need at least one more WR. They need another TE. But the serious talent deficit is on defense. They have no playmakers. They need a pass rushing DE. They need two linebackers. I think they need a corner. They need either a nickel corner, or they need to move Jennings to nickel and bring in a starter. And they need two safeties. There is no way all that will come from one draft. This is going to take a couple of years to address.twistd said:Hub Arkush column:
Bears fans need to stop talking about Jay Cutler.
Stop thinking about him, stop worrying about him, stop complaining about him, stop crucifying him, stop blaming him and stop defending him.
Cutler is an absolute nonfactor at the moment as the Bears set about the more serious business of finding a new general manager and new coach to lead them back to competitiveness and eventual contention.
Why are you all so obsessed with Cutler?
Unless there’s a McCaskey reading this column, you didn’t pay him a penny or lose a dime of the $38 to $54 million he’s going to walk away from the Bears with from his most recent deal, not to mention the $30 to $40 million he made on his first contract with the Bears.
The Bears didn’t fail to sign a single player they thought could help them win because of what they paid Cutler.
Unless there’s a truly huge story brewing out there, he’s never hurt your Mom, Dad, brother or sister.
I’m sure of it, so let it go!
Cutler isn’t the reason Phil Emery and Marc Trestman had to be fired.
The incompetence of the two most important people in the organizations is what got the Bears where they are today, not Cutler.
There is no way George McCaskey and Ted Phillips can drain this swamp if they think the best possible general manager and coach prospects are going to take their jobs if keeping Cutler is a prerequisite.
If they are that dumb, I can promise you Ernie Accorsi will disabuse them of that notion in short order.
But the next Bears' general manager is going to decide the future of Cutler in navy and orange, is going to know he should be the QB for at least one more season, perhaps even more.
Cutler is a symptom, not a disease. Symptoms can be either cured or made to go away.
Not only would the Bears have been at best 5-11 with Jimmy Clausen or David Fales at quarterback, they most likely would have been worse. Fales and Clausen clearly aren’t as good as Cutler.
This team needs at least two more wide receivers, a backup tight end, a number two running back who might eventually become a quality starter, a right tackle and better quarterback play to be good on offense.
The Bears also need a big-time pass rushing right end, at least one and possibly two more starting linebackers, two starting safeties and quality depth at cornerback before they’ll be ready to compete with the Packers and Lions.
The quarterback doesn’t have to come first. In fact, with most of those other needs addressed, the Bears were a Cutler knee injury away from beating the Packers and going to a Super Bowl in 2010.
Anyone who has read or listened to my work know I am not a Cutler fan and I may have been the first guy in town to dispute the wisdom of the trade when they gave up two first-round picks for him in 2009.
But at some point, Cutler being every Bears fan’s excuse for all that is wrong with the team gets over-the-top old, dumb and annoying.
There will be no NFL starting caliber quarterbacks available in free agency this coming offseason. The very best of the group are Jake Locker, Mike Vick, Mark Sanchez, Brian Hoyer and Matt Moore.
Which of those fellas would you rather have than Cutler?
Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston will be the first two quarterbacks drafted this year and the only ones with a chance of starting as rookies, and their scouting reports aren’t nearly as good as Cutler’s, minus the signal caller’s constant brain cramps.
Cutler will probably not be the long-range answer in Chicago, but it’s almost impossible to dream up a better option at the position in 2015.

I'm ok with that as long as we see continual progress every year. We're at least a couple years away from competing with the Packers. 3rd oldest roster in tge league and some big salaries to get out from under.

I think you're under selling them a little, but yeah, they need more than just a good coach now.Kool-Aid Larry said:that's interesting --- I wouldn't have guessed thatflapgreen said:We're at least a couple years away from competing with the Packers. 3rd oldest roster in tge league and some big salaries to get out from under.
this is the kind of thing that makes the bears so entertaining --- maybe it's true all over the league, but living in chicago, I'm overexposed to it.
prior to the season, the bears looked about like they do right now, but da bearssshhhh fans were all going through the schedule, finding 16 wins and a chaaammmpionshiip.
offense was top 3, cutler was top 3, etc.
now that the emperor has been exposed, it's a hopeless team that will take years to rebuild --- all that happened in a few months.
He likely won't last long, do you hire him before the GM or risk losing him? Really are tough calls with this, starting over isn't easy.I'm really starting to lean toward Bowles as my favorite. He would really need to be up for a challenge, though. Tons of holes. I just think there are better spots for him to choose from than the Bears, unfortunately.
Actually, i think I would prefer Ballard and Toubs. But the GM has to be chosen before a head coach. I too, have little confidence in George and Ted to do this right.Man I don't know anymore. And I have little confidence ownership knows either.
Sounds like Ballard is currently the front runner, but who knows. If they listen to Accorsi's guidance, they may not f-this up. Got to think they are paying him for a reason, and you know how they don't love to part with their money.Actually, i think I would prefer Ballard and Toubs. Mike Smith is way better than most guys on that list. Odd that he isn't on there.

I'm with Hub on Cutler and now he's repeating what I've been saying on Marshall for a while. Get him out of here. http://m.chicagofootball.com/2015/01/05/hub-arkush-chicago-bears-cant-afford-to-keep-brandon-marshall/ami5l7j/I am not a huge Hub fan. Maybe getting rid of Cutler, and his bloated salary, would help them address a couple of those positions. But then you have to come up with an alternative at QB. I think it is going to take at least two to three years to rebuild this roster to be anything more than an 8-8 team.

This is the only pair I really want. Hope Ted can fall into this. I think Toub, with his connections to Harbaugh (Bal), Reid and Lovie staffs, would be a great hire and could bring in very good coordinators.Actually, i think I would prefer Ballard and Toubs. Interesting article about Ballard. He sounds like a qualified guy. I would be interested to see what players he recommended/were draft during his time as the Bear's "Southwest Area Scout" from 2001-2011. Briggs comes to mind.Ballard turned down interview with Jets
