Marrone on the interview list.

He did a nice job this year but having a hard time with the whole EJ Manuel in the first round thing which I assume he had a lot to do with.

Chatting with one of the Bears writers on Twitter. His response when I asked who the favorite was and who was at top of his list.

"Not my choice so I won't go there. Don't have a lot of faith in them making right choice though based on recent history."

So Boy George and Sweaty Teddy are interviewing coaches. Tell me exactly what they know about interviewing coaches without a GM
in the above linked article, Brad Biggs doesn't think it's such a bad idea to hit some initial interviews, and has a lot of the same reasons I talked about before. These guys aren't accepting jobs this week, but if you don't have initial sit down to show them there may be an opportunity, and you may have interest, you could lose a good candidate. I'm not saying hire a guy, or make a gm hire a guy, that would be horrible, and I'm back to providing the torches and pitchforks, but it's a first interview and sitdown with management. Not the end of the world.Come on guys, just wait for them to #### it up before going meltdown. The brought in some football brains, and if they listen to his advice, they may actually find a competent candidate that could build this team.
If Accorsi is involved in these interviews at least you have one person that knows about football. What McCaskey and Phillips know about football wouldn't fill a thimble. And what kind of impression does it give prospective hires that the Bears send these two idiots to be part of the interview, of to actually do the interview? And the idea that Phillips will just melt in to the background once the GM is hired seems hard to believe. George McCaskey is proving to be every bit as arrogant and stupid as his brother. Let's hope, through some kind of blind luck, the Bears manage to hire a good GM and a solid coach. And let's hope, that while surrounded by morons, they can succeed. But the more news that comes out the less optimistic I get. It is truly sad that the job as head coach of the Bears has now slid to the point where the Raiders job is more attractive. I never imagined I would see the day when things fell apart this badly.
It's very unrealistic to think Teddy will be more hands off. He's not that kind of guy. He's going down with the ship. I'm not convinced he even really cares much about the Bears. He's a huge ego that needs to feel like he's in control. Success be damned!
Again, where do you guys see Ted Philips interfering in football operations??? I just haven't seen it, I don't think he forced any draft choices or player signings he let Emory run this team. As I asked twistd can you give me an example where you see this happening?
It is not about "on the field" football decisions ... It's is entirely about his inability to hire managers under him to competently make football decisions. As President that is part of his job, and those hires are "football decisions". He is not competent to make those hires. He has shown that, REPEATEDLY. That is the "football decision" problem with Ted Phillips.

As long as Phillips continues to have GM and coach "fall guys" THAT HE INCOMPETENTLY HIRED none of this will change.

To state the obvious.

@mikecwright And I understand you probably can't say this, but it appears that the McCaskeys want yes-men for GM.

@nwfisch Yes I can say it. I agree w/you.

Also from Wright

"But I do know for a fact that at least two of the candidates who interviewed for the head coaching job prior to the Trestman hiring didn't want Cutler as the team's quarterback. One of them mentioned it to Emery during the interview process, which basically squashed his bid for the job."

not buying that one bit, typical Wright after the fact bs. He does it all the time

Guy is one of the best guys out there and interacts with followers more than anyone. Take off the homer glasses and give a reason why you don't buy it.

Followed him for 2 years, it's his MO. Just history. I'm not trying to change your mind, just saying I'm not buying it

edit: and far from homer glasses. I have no allegiance to Emery or Trestman, nothing against Arians. Season was a disaster, Philips needs to go, etc.

Since the Bears, namely Ted Phillips, are/is completely incompetent, I have found that this is a good place for us fans with a brain to have some therapeutic fun (if you will). I think it is a necessity since we have/are becoming a joke on par with the Oakland Raiders, and may need an outlet during this latest “clown show” of a GM/Coaching search process.

I really hope they luck into the right decision here, but since Ted Phillips is a boob of epic proportions when it comes to this task of hiring people on the football side of the ledger (truth be told, I think he is very good on the business side) I thought it might be fun to point out how ridiculous the entire last 3 years has been.

EXAMPLE #1 (Rod Marinelli)

Ted Phillips hires Phil Emery

Phil Emery wants to keep Rodney Marinelli on staff as DC

Emery does not think enough of Marinelli to interview him as a HC candidate though

Still, Rod is asked to interview the coaching candidates and rank them

Rod actually sits in and interviews his next potential bosses

Rod ranks Arians, Bevell …………… and Trestman (a distant third)

Emery hires Trestman

Rod quits as a result.

EXAMPLE #2 (Bruce Arians)

See fact from Example #1

Add the following

Bruce Arians has been an interim HC for nearly an entire year with the Colts

Duties of a HC include game planning, discipline of staff/players & new conferences

During his interview with the Bears he is required to …

(1) Be told who is his DC

(2) Be interviewed by his new DC

(3) Hold pretend news conferences so they can see how he handles them

(even though he has been doing this FOR REAL, for nearly a year)

Bruce thinks this is ridiculous … because, well … it was.

Bruce is not hired (lol)

I could do my Brandon Marshall one, but that is going to take the next couple days with everything from the New contract ---to--- the recent wanting to fight a local radio host. Let’s just say there is a lot to unpack there … TBContinued J.

EDIT: Point of this was I would love to hear "yours as well". Please jump in on Marshall, Cutler, Trestman, etc ... if you'd like.

Hub Arkush column:

Bears fans need to stop talking about Jay Cutler.

Stop thinking about him, stop worrying about him, stop complaining about him, stop crucifying him, stop blaming him and stop defending him.

Cutler is an absolute nonfactor at the moment as the Bears set about the more serious business of finding a new general manager and new coach to lead them back to competitiveness and eventual contention.

Why are you all so obsessed with Cutler?

Unless there’s a McCaskey reading this column, you didn’t pay him a penny or lose a dime of the $38 to $54 million he’s going to walk away from the Bears with from his most recent deal, not to mention the $30 to $40 million he made on his first contract with the Bears.

The Bears didn’t fail to sign a single player they thought could help them win because of what they paid Cutler.

Unless there’s a truly huge story brewing out there, he’s never hurt your Mom, Dad, brother or sister.

I’m sure of it, so let it go!

Cutler isn’t the reason Phil Emery and Marc Trestman had to be fired.

The incompetence of the two most important people in the organizations is what got the Bears where they are today, not Cutler.

There is no way George McCaskey and Ted Phillips can drain this swamp if they think the best possible general manager and coach prospects are going to take their jobs if keeping Cutler is a prerequisite.

If they are that dumb, I can promise you Ernie Accorsi will disabuse them of that notion in short order.

But the next Bears' general manager is going to decide the future of Cutler in navy and orange, is going to know he should be the QB for at least one more season, perhaps even more.

Cutler is a symptom, not a disease. Symptoms can be either cured or made to go away.

Not only would the Bears have been at best 5-11 with Jimmy Clausen or David Fales at quarterback, they most likely would have been worse. Fales and Clausen clearly aren’t as good as Cutler.

This team needs at least two more wide receivers, a backup tight end, a number two running back who might eventually become a quality starter, a right tackle and better quarterback play to be good on offense.

The Bears also need a big-time pass rushing right end, at least one and possibly two more starting linebackers, two starting safeties and quality depth at cornerback before they’ll be ready to compete with the Packers and Lions.

The quarterback doesn’t have to come first. In fact, with most of those other needs addressed, the Bears were a Cutler knee injury away from beating the Packers and going to a Super Bowl in 2010.

Anyone who has read or listened to my work know I am not a Cutler fan and I may have been the first guy in town to dispute the wisdom of the trade when they gave up two first-round picks for him in 2009.

But at some point, Cutler being every Bears fan’s excuse for all that is wrong with the team gets over-the-top old, dumb and annoying.

There will be no NFL starting caliber quarterbacks available in free agency this coming offseason. The very best of the group are Jake Locker, Mike Vick, Mark Sanchez, Brian Hoyer and Matt Moore.

Which of those fellas would you rather have than Cutler?

Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston will be the first two quarterbacks drafted this year and the only ones with a chance of starting as rookies, and their scouting reports aren’t nearly as good as Cutler’s, minus the signal caller’s constant brain cramps.

Cutler will probably not be the long-range answer in Chicago, but it’s almost impossible to dream up a better option at the position in 2015.

Uhh Hub, might want to go back and re-watch the tape on that one. JC wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire when the injury happened. I don't ever recall seeing anyone say that if Cutler plays the whole game the Bears win that game.

Hub is so full of it. I remember hearing him on the radio with B&B and the trade was all sunshine and puppies. All 3 agreed that this was a franchise altering move for the good.

He is full of crap sometimes

Least surprising thing ever there. The Bears want a pushover, not a guy like Rex, or Arians from a couple years ago. Look at their history. All coaches who were subservient to ownership.

Why couldn't we have a guy like Flacco? Guy is the opposite of Cutler as far as stepping up in big spots.

We were too busy taking Chris Williams ahead of Flacco in 08 and then trading away multiple picks for Cutler the following season

I am not a huge Hub fan. And Hub may be rewriting history as far as his feelings about the Cutler trade in the beginning. But I think his assessment of the Bears situation is pretty much spot on. On offense they need a right tackle. They need at least one more WR. They need another TE. But the serious talent deficit is on defense. They have no playmakers. They need a pass rushing DE. They need two linebackers. I think they need a corner. They need either a nickel corner, or they need to move Jennings to nickel and bring in a starter. And they need two safeties. There is no way all that will come from one draft. This is going to take a couple of years to address.

Maybe getting rid of Cutler, and his bloated salary, would help them address a couple of those positions. But then you have to come up with an alternative at QB. I think it is going to take at least two to three years to rebuild this roster to be anything more than an 8-8 team.

Also need to start looking for Fortes replacement. Way too many touches this year and he looked very slow the last 6 weeks or so.

Much more important than another WR.

that's interesting --- I wouldn't have guessed that

this is the kind of thing that makes the bears so entertaining --- maybe it's true all over the league, but living in chicago, I'm overexposed to it.

prior to the season, the bears looked about like they do right now, but da bearssshhhh fans were all going through the schedule, finding 16 wins and a chaaammmpionshiip.

offense was top 3, cutler was top 3, etc.

now that the emperor has been exposed, it's a hopeless team that will take years to rebuild --- all that happened in a few months.

I'm ok with that as long as we see continual progress every year.
That would make me very happy.

I think you're under selling them a little, but yeah, they need more than just a good coach now.

I'm really starting to lean toward Bowles as my favorite. He would really need to be up for a challenge, though. Tons of holes. I just think there are better spots for him to choose from than the Bears, unfortunately.

He likely won't last long, do you hire him before the GM or risk losing him? Really are tough calls with this, starting over isn't easy.

Man I don't know anymore. And I have little confidence ownership knows either.
Actually, i think I would prefer Ballard and Toubs. But the GM has to be chosen before a head coach. I too, have little confidence in George and Ted to do this right.

Sounds like Ballard is currently the front runner, but who knows. If they listen to Accorsi's guidance, they may not f-this up. Got to think they are paying him for a reason, and you know how they don't love to part with their money.

Or he could just be in there as a PR move and they will ignore him.

I'm with Hub on Cutler and now he's repeating what I've been saying on Marshall for a while. Get him out of here. http://m.chicagofootball.com/2015/01/05/hub-arkush-chicago-bears-cant-afford-to-keep-brandon-marshall/ami5l7j/

Could be a mistake on his part but Rapoport tweeted a list of teams Bowles would interview with this week and the Bears wasn't on it, basically all of the other vacancies.

Man I don't know anymore. And I have little confidence ownership knows either.

This is the only pair I really want. Hope Ted can fall into this. I think Toub, with his connections to Harbaugh (Bal), Reid and Lovie staffs, would be a great hire and could bring in very good coordinators.

Fingers crossed.

Its lunatic that the Bears are seriously talking to head coach prospects right now. I cant think of a better way to scare off all the decent GM prospects in the league. Theyve made this kind of mistake over and over again, and the reputation is that if you come to Chicago, you arent going to be able to do your job because McCaskey and Phillips are going to tinker and stick you with people.

I didnt object to what they said the day they cleaned house about being OPEN to hiring a head coach first if something cant miss comes along. But none of these guys are remotely in that category. Bill Cower or Chucky Gruden you might make that move... but not for the normal guys in the pipeline.

Either the Bears are ignoring Accorsi, or they hired him in the first place because he was a Yes Man with an in with the McCaskeys. Or some combination of both. My prediction is that, in a classic move, the guy tasked to find your new GM ends up getting himself hired as GM.
