My cousins all grew up in Montgomery County during the Gibbs era and are all huge Washington fans. My oldest cousin still lives there, but her kids (early teens) are Ravens fans, because when they were growing up Washington stunk and the Ravens were perennial contenders. Last time the two teams played, the whole family went and cheered for opposite sides.

Interesting dynamic there. If my kids grow up to be Yankee, Jets, or Nets fans.. Not good!
There is a fairly large area of the Atlantic coast from DC to the Outer Banks of North Carolina that I'm assuming was Redskins or Baltimore Colts territory until the panthers came aboard.
I wonder if that's still apparent in southern Virginia

North Carolina was a big Redskin area until the Panthers came to. I would think you could probably still find a decent amount of Skins fan in NC.
I wasn't around during the Colts run, but I'd assume they were mostly centered around Baltimore and probably parts of Delaware. Kind of like the Ravens are.

Coolest thing is KC continues to make his charity front and center. He continues to rake in funds for International Justice Mission. Saw on his twitter or something he was raffling off playoff tix with proceeds going to IJM.

Baltimore is northeast of DC. Columbia MD is about halfway in between the 2, and in Columbia the split is probably 50-50 among Ravens and Redskins fans. South of there it's more Redskins fans, including extending as far as the Carolinas. The Redskins used to the the SE US's closest team decades ago. That and the owner (George Preston Marshall that piece of ####) insisting on having a segregated team endeared them to a southern audience.
Ravens fans start at Columbia MD and go north and east. There are Ravens fans in some parts of PA. Central PA is kind of on the edge of 4 different fan areas -- Steelers, Eagles, Ravens, Redskins -- and I'd say the fan split there is about in that order.

I think it might have been a factor but I think they also just threw it out there to needle the team a bit about the name. I suspect the truth is that the city just isn't interested in spending $500 million for 8/10 home games a year and the hassle of having Dan Snyder as a partner. Nats Park was different because the city wasn't going to get a team unless it built a park, and it's 81 home games a year, and it has revitalized a neighborhood. The area around the RFK site is already being revitalized between the expanding gentrification of the Eastern Market area to the west and the H Street Corridor to the north. A football stadium would basically just be a construction/traffic hassle.

Such a shame if they can't get it together to build the stadium on the site of RFK. It's centrally located, has a Metro stop, is pretty accessible by car because there are so many ways out of there, and has a lot of history. Pretty much the exact opposite of FedEx Field in every particular.
In my early teens (the early 80s), I'd take Metro in from Falls Church with $20 in my pocket, and my brother and I would stand at the top of the Metro escalator and always manage to end up buying tickets from someone (a lot of times it would be a person with just one extra - we didn't care about not sitting together. A couple of times the people must have thought I was some kind of underprivileged urchin, as they would end up using the $ I had given them for the ticket to buy me food).
Northern Virginia - especially in or out near Loudon County - would just suck. Maybe not as bad as Raljon sucks, but it would still be a far suburbs disappointment. Right before I left town, Jack Kent Cooke was trying to get the stadium built between National Airport and Old Town Alexandria. That would have been awesome, but the idea never really went anywhere, which is when he got made and dragged the team out to Landover, where he built on the cheap.
Nice to see Washington back in the playoffs. I think they have a real chance vs. Green Bay. Then they just need to win at Arizona and have Seattle knock off the Vikings and Panthers to bring the NFC Championship game back to town.

Ha! I grew up a Washington fan in Central NJ because my mom is from DC, and also because the first SB win came when I was 8, which is a good formative age for sports allegiances. Weirdest part is that my dad is from Detroit so I grew up cheering equally for the Skins and the Lions. In fact, I still do. I'm a sports bigamist.
If I had to guess, the strip mall is better for the local economy and the immediate neighborhood than a football stadium.

I'm new here, having lived and worked in Howard county for the past 8 years. In my experience, it's not so much a geographical difference as a demographic one. The younger you are, the more likely you are to be a Ravens fan.

As a teacher in Northern Virginia I agree. Lots of Ravens fan students whose parents root for Washington.
Both are on TV routinely in this market. One wins regularly and was in a Super Bowl in their lifetime. The other, with rare exceptions, has been a doormat since before they were born.
Still time to change that, but until recently the Skins were looking at a lost generation.
Could something like the return of Lichtensteiger be this big for the running game? If so, we are talking about a potential game changer as the Redskins look to step up to stiffer competition in the playoffs.

While I agree having Lichtensteiger back is very good, let's not assume that he'll be at full strength or even in shape to play much.
And while the drop in rushing yards seems to correspond to Lichtensteiger bein injured, I think it began with Lauvao being injured. For some bizarre reason Lauvao was run blocking really well this year after being mostly a stiff last year.

It shines a little light on how Kirk basically went from a hard worker with a chip on his shoulder (not rare) to a football computer with a lifestyle centered 100% around cracking the code on being a star QB (very rare).
Brees took a similar path. I remember reading an incredible article around the time he was breaking out in NO about the brain exercises he would do involving spatial awareness and memory, in order to max out his own processing ability on the field and hit a ceiling his physical tools alone would never allow for.
Brady has a similar story.

Big props to Joe Jacoby for being named Hall of Fame finalist! Dude definitely deserves to get in IMO. He was starting left tackle for one of the most revered offensive lines in recent memory. Back then, we seldom fretted over our offensive line the way we do now!

Really good read. I wasn't a big Cousins guy coming into the season, but he's super likable and you have to admire his approach to the game. Glad to see him having success here.
Injury questions:
1. Matt Jones vs. Chris Thompson vs. Pierre Thomas -- after Morris, who is gonna dress from the RB corps? I've heard speculation all week but haven't seen the final word. It's actually an interesting decision, as the second RB after Morris typically gets a fair number of snaps.
2. Jarrett replacement -- so we signed Cary Williams, but does that mean he just automatically gets all of Jarrett's action right off the bat? Or are there other guys who will do this. From what I understand, Jarrett was actually fairly important coming in situationally and had the flexibility to play different roles.
3. Any other injury concerns we should be aware of?
Looking back on it, lucky break we had that week off to rest Williams and Jackson...hopefully they'll be fresh.

Sounds like we're only going to dress 4 RBs in this one. Gruden already mentioned DY as one of them. So that leaves 3 out of Morris, Jones, Thompson, and Thomas. I think it'll be Morris, Thomas, and Thompson. How healthy is Jones at this point? And with his fumbling issues, can you trust him in a big spot like this right now? Thomas has played well and brings a veteran presence and has playoff experience, so I think you have to play him. Thompson has been more explosive lately, so I think he gets the last spot over Jones.
Not sure what kind of PT Williams will see. He wasn't very good in Seattle this year, so I'm not expecting much from him if he does play much.
Interested to see if Leichensteiger plays. If he does, think that's a nice boost to the OL. Definitely glad we were able to rest DJax and Trent last week. Those are 2 huge key pieces to this offense.

Yep. I took crap for saying they had the best draft in the division but they seemed to make a lot of very solid, logical picks IMO
