Hermine's jog to the west is bad news for Charleston and possibly other parts North. Increased chances to be on the "wrong side" (East/Southeast) of the tropical storm.

Folks need to be paying attention to this storm because it is intensifying and approaching some shallow warm water.

On a lighter note, local news has told me to prep for the storm by filling up my tank with gas and staying off the roads. What?

I guess there's some concern that Hermine (or the sub tropical mess left of it) could stall off the mid-Atlantic and bring a lot of rain to some areas. Could get interesting.

You might need to start your car to stay warm! ;)

Yep.  When they were showing it passing to the east it was one thing, but an inland track is going to dump more rain on the Charleston area ... and the midlands.

Perry, FL seems to be the target. The bend, Panhandle section is going to be battered, it already is. Winds coming up out of the South and Southeast wrapping around are going to create a storm surge and likely pretty heavy flooding. Tallahassee, Southern Bama and Georgia all are going to be impacted.

Nothing too bad in Tampa, yet anyway.  Schools are closed today and most are working from home if they can...but no serious issues.

My son is at USF. Teacher canceled his class yesterday. School canceled all classes today. I'm sure classes will be packed tomorrow before the 3 day weekend.

Nice.  I'm catching up on some mock drafts for my real one tomorrow night.

Mother In Law traveling tomorrow from close to Gainesville, we asked her to go ahead and drive down tonight, just get away form the mess.

Just strengthened from TS to hurricane, though landfall is near so it won't be able to tighten up much.

Sure but that also means the winds are picking up speed out of the South and these first bands are packing a punch. I just got off the phone with Ma, she's on the 50 going East towards Orlando trying to get away from this mess. Taking the Turnpike South once she gets across the state, hopefully I don't have to send a search and rescue.

Oh, I wasn't trying to minimize it. Just that it doesn't have enough time to Cat-up a lot. It's still going to be rough.

Hope your mom stays safe.

We are under tornado watches here in Lake county nothing real bad yet probably won't be here, but poor Cedar Key always seems to get nailed.Watching weather channel now showing waves already going over sea wall.I love that place go fishing there all the time and it's my go to place for a old Florida get away.

Radar Tampa

Pinellas and Hillsborough County getting a nice slap across the face right now, big band flying over right now, they seem to be moving fast though.

Hermine not playing favorites. FSU main campus Tallahassee lost power and on emergency generators. Trees and power lines down in Gainesville.

I live just southeast of Tampa.  Lots of heavy rain and some pretty strong wind gusts. Schools closed and more closures imminent.  Definitely a rain producer here and looks like feeder bands coming in throughout the morning and beyond.  We've definitely had heavier rain producers than this roll through, but it's dangerous out there.  Stay safe folks to the north.

Folks in the Northeast might want to look at Sunday forecast. Hermine supposed to stall off DelMarVa peninsula Sunday to Tuesday.  Not good for Jersey shore holiday weekend

Seems like you guys have been getting dumped on for 3 days now

Some pretty gusty / rainy weather early this morning.  I probably should have drained see water out of the pool last night...

Beautiful sunny day in Charleston.  It feels like Hermine dragged some of our normal humidity with her too.  Very nice.  A great day for my draft!

I had small limbs scattered over my yard and only had to lower the water in the pool once.   One really odd thing though, my grill (on my deck) has moved about two feet.  I'm thinking one big gust of wind, but it didn't topple it, it just slid it a few feet.

This is gonna be bad for us in R.I. if this storm stays even a little bit west.  I'm sitting on a South facing beach now,  and there are bands of dark clouds over us. Not much for surf yet, but it has picked up a little in the few hours I have been sitting here.  I suspect this spot will be underwater by tomorrow night.

I saw a four foot surge for CT. but that could change quite a bit.  I agree it is weird that none of the news channels are talking about this too much.  I can't remember if a Hurricane has ever developed this close to us before.  Will it keep the same name and even be called a hurricane again?  They never named the perfect storm, even though that reached hurricane strength.   I think that one was involved with hurricane Grace but ended up being a different storm.

Its a very interesting scenario playing out this weekend.  I hope everyone stays safe.

How strong was Sandy when it made landfall?  It seems that storm surge is the only thing to really worry about with this storm.

It was a post-tropical cyclone when it made landfall (category 1). Some low hurricanes have done a lot of flooding in the past. When Hurricane Floyd came through NC, it was category 2 when it made landfall, but the state was already saturated from tropical storm dennis, and Floyd sat there and flooded eastern NC. The coastline didn't get hit as hard with flooding as the more inland areas did.

I think storm surge is the main worry with most hurricanes, Sandy was a category 1, but it was a whole different beast than this storm.

Sandy was huge and just pushed a tremendous amount of water into a narrow area. The biggest threat with Hermine is that she's forecasted to stall out and just start pumping water to vulnerable shore lines. The biggest problem is when a storm hits at high tide. Hermine could affect three or four high tides, just piling up more and more water.

My high tide at 10:40 just passed (south shore of LI, water on three sides, closest about 50 ft away) without any noticeable difference. The last update I saw was the Sunday night tide should be the worst, so I'm hoping to get a decent read on the Sunday morning high tide. But, if we flood Sunday morning, the water doesn't drain instantly. Water levels remain high and when Sunday night comes, it's even worse due to the previous flooding. If we have the same happen on Monday, it'll just get worse.

I agree that if you've got more than 20 ft of elevation, this isn't much of an issue. If you don't you're keeping a darn close eye.

Are you leaving?
Not at the moment. We have a 4.5 month old, so if I think there's any risk that we'll get water, I will tuck tail. Rode out Sandy and only got three inches of water (though the water level was three feet outside at crest), but if I'm going to be much more cautious this go around. Things can be replaced. People can't.

From the sounds of it, South/Central Jersey is where the possibility of severe flooding is the greatest. I've seen 2-4 ft for my neck of the woods and we can ride that out.

ETA: The 11 pm update pushed farther east. Each mile is good news for us.

GIANT waves late this afternoon in Narragansett RI at low tide.  I left around 7:00 and they were still building.  I think tonight's high tide will be the first bad one for surge.  The crazy part is if this thing turns the way they are predicting now, it will spend the next couple of days making a straight line for us.  I'm a little nervous.  Luckily the weather peeps have been wrong about this track since it left Florida.

What did they say?
Yesterday they put a message in all caps that this is a life threatening storm and anybody spreading misinformation on their page will be reported to the authorities. All I did was say today should we report them to the authorities for the misinformation they spread with their forecast? They deleted my post and now I can't comment or life their page anymore.

:goodposting:

Absolutely spectacular day.  First comfortable day outside in months.  Had a neighbor's palm come down, but it was dead anyway, so the neighborhood thanks you, Hermine!

Update?  Is it still coming?
Some pretty big wind gusts down here in Saunderstown, a huge tree on my property snapped off this afternoon while I was outside stacking firewood.

I've got some giant trees surrounding my house, ive got to drop about a dozen of them this Fall.
