Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (1 Viewer)

Trump is the direct result of years of social justice/PC police.
Of course he is. But many aspects of "PC" have been wholeheartedly endorsed by both parties -- for example, how many Republicans are advocating the use of the word "Indian" to describe Native Americans? Footballguys is as conservative as a website as you will ever find on the internet, yet Joe has banned a number of words in the name of political correctness (e.g., "r-tarded", or pretty much any gay slur).

We are a better country because of this. And the only people who seem to disagree are Trump supporters.

If he ends up voting for them all the time, he can call himself an Independent, etc. but he's just a far, far left Democrat.
No. He was never a Democrat until recently. Again- who do you expect him to vote with? The Republicans? Your argument is just silly.

No question about the bolded.  Agree 100%.

The constant calls of racist, bigot, stupid, redneck, etc. over any disagreement between right and left is tiring.

There is a difference between being respectful and tactful and the oppression of the PC police. Like I said, I don't agree with them but I understand it. There really is a difference between not being a jerk and having every word dissected to see who it offends. I don't think that makes the country better. Encouraging people to respect one another does. Neither the PC police nor Trump do that and we all lose for it.

As for "Indian" that is dang confusing. Just because Columbus had no clue where he really ended up and thought the people he met were Indians (i.e. actually from India) and no one seems to have corrected him- now we say Indian and you have to clarify if you meant Native American Indian or India Indian, might as well just say Native American. Or maybe we can go the Game of Thrones route and call them the "First Men" (though then everyone will have a crap fit about the men part).

I wouldn't say Obama per se but make no mistake- Trump is the direct result of years of social justice/PC police. There are a number of people that are sick and tired of it. They are sick of how police have been made out to be criminals and criminals victims. They are sick of being corrected when they something about "illegal immigrants" to "undocumented migrants". They are just sick and tired of it and they are very angry. Anger makes people do dumb things. Dumb things like supporting someone who doesn't give a crap about the social justice/PC police and will say whatever he wants for President even though he is woefully unprepared and unfit for the Presidency. You can debate whether that it is right or wrong but it really is silly to try to deny that this is a direct result of the anger people on the right feel after years of the constant social justice/PC onslaught they feel they are under. I do not agree with their response but I can understand how they have been lead there.
You should read the Trump & American Authoritarianism article from Vox.

Fascinating read that points to why he has the support the does.

Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Maine voting today

Looks like Trump expected to do well in Louisiana and Maine.
I expect he'll take KS by a pretty decent margin as well.

ETA: As the results come in, looks like I might be dead wrong. Cruz's pandering appears to be paying dividends in the bible belt.

I'd be surprised if Cruz doesn't win Kansas.  Closed caucus state, he won Oklahoma in a similar setup.

Guess the Kansas folk didn't buy Trump's "my favorite book is the bible" schtick.

Just a hunch on my part, but I think Trump is going to have a disappointing day.
I get the feel he will win LA.  For Trump if he can win KY and ME then the KS loss is nothing.  At the very least for Trump he needs to win LA, the only primary today.  A loss there could signal a shift.

Assuming Cruz holds on in Kansas, the Midwest will be forming an anti-Trump wall. http://53eig.ht/1QyBlOe  pic.twitter.com/KSfIuANOb3

Oh stop why. Cruz is creepy but she's a smart guy and will do good things.
Nope, said it all along.  I voted for Kasich, I'm not that right wing.  He led the party down a path it couldn't possibly win in that shutdown.  From that point on I was done ever considering him.

Cruz isn't winning the nomination.
I find it unlikely.  Yet I think he has the right strategy to maximize his chances.  He needs Trump to knock out Rubio in FL if he can't win it himself.  Isolate Trump and try to get the most delegates.  In a floor fight or brokered deal, the establishment isn't siding with him either.  Only in a Trump vs Cruz binary choice would they ever do that.

Cruz cannot be Hillarity. He's too far right wing. When you limit your base, you lose. Cruz and the republican elite are too stupid to figure that out.

Seriously? Cruz is the best-case scenario for Hilary.  It's an absolute whitewash for her if he wins.
No chance

Hillary eats Trump for breakfast.  The Dems and press are just starting on him and it's already coming apart.

Cruz is a nightmare for her.

Donald is taking the big states, NY/NJ/FL/CA....too many delegates in the big states.
That assumes nothing has changed the last 4 days.  CNN said that Cruz's internal polling showed Kansas would neck and neck.  He won it with ease.  Early results in Maine show him ahead, a state Trump is supposed to win (he still might).

It's too little data to say for sure, but 2 things could be happening:

1.  Anti-Trump Republicans figured out on Super Tuesday that Cruz, not Rubio is the one who has the best chance to catch him.

2.  The barrage of attacks from the Republican establishment is having an effect.

If the early results hold, the whole thing may be changing.

Florida and Ohio will be the entire election
Santorum and Huckabee dominated KS, so I wouldn't put too much into those nuts.  We'll have a better indicator after Tuesday.

#2.  I had a feeling.  I think Trump is in serious trouble.

If Kasich wins Ohio and Rubio somehow wins Florida it just further muddies the picture and dilutes Cruz message that he won his home state. Especially if Trump comes in 2nd there and wins pretty much everywhere else.

This is spot on in my mind.  To me the biggest tell-tale of today is that Cruz's campaign is saying they thought they were neck and neck in KS.  Now, caucuses are hard to poll.  But if the polling was good, this could be that the anti-Trump vote is going over to Cruz.
