Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (2 Viewers)

Kasich, Rubio, and Jeb are probably the only 3 that come close to being qualified for the job and wouldn't be total nightmares for the country both foreign and domestically.

Paul knows his stuff, but shouldn't be president. Same with Christie. The others are pretty much insane.

Carson and Jeb are ok but man they're boring. The rest are brutal and need to be cut off from these going forward.
Completely agree.

I'm enjoying the Trump show but I think he hurt himself a bit last night by acting even more childish than usual.

So much of these debates are affected by the moderators, and once again, they were awful. It seems like this is the case more often than not.

First off, I don't even know what Hewitt and Bash were even doing there; Tapper asked 90% of the questions. Hewitt is a fine interviewer and supposedly he was there to ask tough, specific questions- that's what we heard for weeks in the run-up to this debate. I think he managed to ask 3 questions all night and none of them were specific at all. Bash was, if anything, even more invisible.

But even worse than all this, from the moment the debate started Tapper had no control whatsoever. He continually allowed people to interrupt him (Fiorina was the first to realize this and take full advantage of it; later on in the debate other candidates caught on and did the same.) He let them run on and on and say things completely unrelated to the subject matter at hand. (Such as when Fiorina interrupted the debate on Planned Parenthood, briefly linked abortion to Iran-???- and then offered her stump speech about the phone calls she will make on her first day in office.)

As usual, most of the questions were too general. At this point the public is served by hearing specific ideas. Candidates are going to avoid telling you those unless they get specific questions and they're forced to respond.
The next time this happens will be the first time ever.

CNN is a joke. Half the problem with politics and issues dividing the country these days are due to how the media is covering things and being more about entertainment than journalism. Everything is dumbed down or focused on the bombastic rather than anything subtle or important or compromising. Everything is about divisiveness or gotcha or fabricated outrage. That's why they don't talk about Kasich or ask policy questions or hold people to answering things in specific non-sound bytes. It's also why trump is winning. He offers no ideas. Just general statements that people assume to be true or possible. He knows nothing of foreign policy or how to operated within the constitution or law.

I think we can all agree that 11 or even 8-9 on stage is a bit much. They aren't going to get anything productive out of these 'debates' with such a large number of participants. That said, the actual rules of the debate aren't helpful either. If everyone is going to get a minute to "rebutt" if their name is mentioned, well, Trump is gonna dominate. Hell, the questions to others were about Trump. He's guaranteed to have a soundbite on just about every question.

Couldn't agree more. The moderators were not in control. Sounded like 11 guys at a bar table all trying to get in their point; all at the same time.

I don't think the moderators did a great job, but there was no way to get that group under control. There were 11 candidates on stage, and at least nine of them were desperate to make an impression so they could elevate their standing. Nobody was gonna stand quietly and wait to get called on.

I don't see why they couldn't physically turn off everyone's mic if it wasn't their turn to speak, tell everyone beforehand that's how it's going to work. They have to know that many people on stage would turn into a mess. They would have to space them out or use selective mic's but it could work.

Agree with LJ that people shouldn't get 'points' for jumping in and running over other's turn.

This morning the media consensus seems to be: Fiorina won, Trump lost. I won't believe Trump lost until I actually see him go down in the polls. They said he lost last time too.

As for Carly, I'm probably not the right guy to ask because to me she spouts such nonsense about nearly everything. But she is very composed and forceful about it.

I don't agree with everything she says, but she makes good points and articulates them very well. Basically, the complete opposite of Trump.

I was most impressed with Carly last night. I don't agree that she spouts nonsense about nearly everything. I think she makes a lot of sense about a lot of things.

Here are a few things we learned after staying up way too late watching the second republican debate

Scott Walker has an incredibly asymmetrical face, his one eye sits up at 2 o'clock while the other sits down at 9 o'clock. It is very distracting

Ted Cruz. I wouldn't leave my daughter in a room with him, if I had a son I wouldn't leave him in a room with him either. this guy is a complete creep and has a Subway Jared feel to him

Jeb Bush. He seemed the same lifeless, passionless dweeb he always come across as. His marijuana admission gave him no traction, almost like he was trying to prove he was a cool kid when everybody knows that in high school guys like Trump gave him wedgies behind the lunchroom. At least his brother was probably a true cool kid with his coke induced trips.

Kasich. The guy is the only adult in the room although the entire time he looked like he had to take a leak. He couldn't stand up straight and his eyes were bloodshot, I'm afraid the best candidate might be dying in front our very eyes

Carli. Trump should have told her the truth, that her face looks like a Picasso. Can't wait for her to fire 30,000 Americans

Trump. His bravado was a bit tempered and he seems to be building some kind of budding friendship with Carson but he is still the star of the show

Carson. If Walker looks stoned, Jeb looks like he needs a 5-hour energy, Carson looks like he needs to be strapped on a gurney and given those heartattack shock pads. This guy speaks so slowly it makes my skin crawl

Christie. He should have said his code name would have been "cheeseburger". The dude is literally twice as wide as any other candidate although he did have a few moments and I love when he dukes it out with....

Rand Paul. He actually made some sense yesterday. He is right about ISIS, was right about Iraq and is 1000% right on marijuana. He is also probably 5'4" and has a ####ty haircut.

Huckabee Save everybody some time and just go home

Rubio. He is so scripted it's like he is a cross between an elephant and a robot, one that needs a bottle of poland spring

If someone talks policy they get called boring. When Trump says Paul Rand is ugly the place goes nuts.

CNN is not really the problem.

She's a smoke blower who says whatever she thinks will get here where she wants to go. Yeah, they all are but she's obvious. In a 20-30 second rant, she drove up the national debt by a couple of billion with her 'plans'. Sadly none of the other losers caught her on it.

This is the type of analysis that we should be hearing on CNN & Fox. Straight and to the point.

I like Kasich and he's on my shortlist but he's so schlubby and does this weird thing with his mouth when he talks that is very distracting.

I watched the debate - well, a portion of it - with an open mind last night as a legitimately undecided voter.

I went in thinking that only Kasich, Fiorina, or Paul could get my vote, and I don't think any of that really changed. I thought Fiorina was sharp and concise, and I like that she wasn't intimidated, but as some have pointed out here, sometimes her comments may be factually incorrect. Vegetable lasagna and Rand Paul barely got a word in, which is a shame. Kasich kept actually hammering home his accomplishments, which are impressive from a budgetary standpoint, but everyone was more focused on Donald Trump's insults than actual policy positions. And Paul absolutely nailed it on the Iraq War and is the closest to my position on the war on drugs.

The one who really intrigued me last night, surprisingly, was Marco Rubio. I came away very impressed with his demeanor and speaking, and will have to do some further digging to see if he's a lunatic or relatively normal. The rest of the candidates on stage are garbage candidates, IMO.

Still, I don't think any of these guys really tops Gary Johnson for me. I'd love to see Jon Huntsman get another shot but it'll never happen.

Trump smoking those losers. Double

The Reagan Library was a particularly inspired choice for a debate that spent a significant amount of time focused on the horrors of a more powerfully armed Iran and the need to deport illegal immigrants. Maybe they can schedule a future debate at the Nixon Library where they can antagonize China and discuss the importance of the rule of law.

They should scrap the debates and just have someone good (not sure who that would be) interview/grill each of them for an hour or 90 minutes. One to two per week through the end of the year. They could get all 15 in that way.

The immigration action fund ad in the middle of the debate was pretty perfect, with the cuts between Reagan's farewell address and statements of Trump, et al. on immigration.

Will never happen, the average American just wants to see Trump eviscerate the other candidates.

How about this.

One on one with a moderator. 16 candidates (throw some sacrifice ...say Rick Perry.... in vs Trump). Trump gets the #1 seed. Winner moves on.

The thought that Trump won this thing is laughable. Other than his quip about Jeb's energy he got his ### handed to him. Carly was the best speaker in the debate by a pretty fair margin. Rubio comes off as way too scripted but I thought had a pretty good day.

Guessing the source of the polling account for the results.

Still rooting for Rubio but damn he needs to settle down and learn to be more natural. His opening water joke was ill-advised as well. People on the left are using it as a joke on the drought when he was really just joking about himself.

Was a really stupid joke.

1) It really wasn't funny

2) "Hey California, I know you have a historically bad drought and are restricting water, so I brought my own so I don't have to use yours!"

I will second whoever said CNN did a horrible job with the debate last night.Clearly they wanted a fight and to get Trump in as many times as possible while basically ignoring a few of the others.

Still haven't changed my mind in that the only Republican I would consider is Rand Paul.He was spot on with his pot talk and also hit some great points about ISIS and also got in a few jabs at Trump.

I'm still in shock Trump is leading this group but I really shouldn't be given the current state of the party.

John Kasich cotinues to be the best choice for the party. Kasich-Rubio 2016 would be a formidible pair to tackle by whoever wins the Democratic nomination.

While the Democratic party is as corrupt as the day is long, the Republican party is similarly inept.

It is too late into the campaign to still have 15 candidates. It time to narrow to the best 6

Ted Cruz

Marco Rubio

John Kasich

*** The top-3 are the best choices to win the general election

Carly Fiorina - strong VP candidate, particularly if Clinton gets the Dem nomination

Jeb Bush - has name and money, but simply lacks the charisma to energize his party.

Donald Trump/Ben Carson - run-off to see who gets the last spot - neither are viable general election candidates

These candidates are where Republican supporters should be stockpiling SuperPAC money. The longer the party wastes time on fringe candidates, the longer it will take to build the brand of the ultimate nominee.

i did not watch but i was reading about the pot exchange

this is what i read Paul said:

“Under the current circumstances, kids who had privilege like you do don’t go to jail, but the poor kids in our inner cities go to jail. I don’t think that’s fair,” Paul said, directing his comments to Bush.

I do not disagree, but i wonder if he thinks pot is the only place that happens. Because it is not. Pot, coke, alcohol, theft, drunk driving, etc etc etc. And not just kids. Wealthy people avoid jail much easier than poor people. It doesn't seem like a weed thing to me, other than the amount of weed arrests we have brings the real issue of justice differing by economic status to light
