Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (1 Viewer)

I used to say that, too.

He's reached a point at which he's likely to win the nomination... time to accept this as a real thing.
He's going to win the nomination with 35% of the vote.  Despite having been the frontrunner and presumptive nominee for a while.  Sure, he gets a good percentage of the vote in the deep south, but how does that matter?  The Republicans were going to win those states anyway.

I'm far from a electoral map guru, but the CNN talking heads were all worked up about how his success in Michigan and Hillary's failure could be an indicator that the rust belt states will go red in a Trump/Hillary election. That's a big deal, assuming they're right.

Trump received 36.5% of the vote in Michigan.  Hilary received 48.3%.  Yet this is somehow a positive for Trump?

How anyone could watch Kasich for an hour, then Cruz for an hour and then Trump for ..... 18 minutes and not think to themselves why are these two nut jobs getting the same air time as Kasich is a question someone with an R next to their name is going to have to explain to me. Because I'm fairly intelligent and I can't think of a single adult reason that doesn't require copious amounts of alcohol and a weak pulse.

Sorry, man, but you're just spouting nonsense about this topic. I don't think you're recalling anything, you're just making stuff up. You really need to stop making assertions about things you don't know about.

Here's an article written in 2013 to give you some facts.

By the time Arnold was done, the CA deficit was $60 billion. Brown took office in 2011. Since 2012, California has had a budget surplus every fiscal year after having deficits since 2000, including deficits every year of Arnold's tenure. Another budget surplus is projected for 2017, possibly as much as $10 billion. These aren't opinions, they're facts/projections. My opinion is that billion dollar surpluses probably would work nationwide.
Do you live in California?

Kasich is weak on immigration. Many voters on the Republican side want someone strong on immigration. It is really that simple.

And I thank them for putting Democrats in the White House.
The fact that Kasich is the governor of a swing state puts him at an immense disadvantage with conservative voters, IMO. Whereas Cruz/ Rubio get to pick/ choose what they support in the Senate, Kasich is forced to compromise with moderates/ liberals. Hence Cruz/ Rubio are able to maintain a degree of conservative purity that Kasich cannot.

And this is everything that is wrong with this country in once succinct paragraph.  The best politicians at any level are those willing to compromise, it is key to democracy.

Kasich is a joke, he tried to shame Americans into being okay with illegal immigration just because the cheap labor is good for his donors, and that is 100 percent truth. He isn't a decent guy trying to compromise for the good of Americans, he is a calculating puppet trying to please his donors.

I wasn't defending Kasich, read it again Sam.

How could anyone think Kasich is an adult when he tried to get a movie removed from blockbuster shelf just because he didn't like it?

Does where he lives change the budget surplus?
No. But it would go a long ways in explaining why he has a fundamental misunderstanding of the California budget, the process in which a budget is enacted, and the structural factors that influence income revenue the state receives, as well as economic factors at play.

First and foremost, Arnold was elected in a recall election. One of the reasons was that the previous governor, Gray Davis, was horrible. From ruinous energy deals that locked the state into multi year contracts that resulted in billions of dollars in higher costs to the car tax to the multi billion dollar state deficits...the state was already on the brink financially. There was nearly a 35 billion dollar deficit before Arnold took office.

One of the reasons why the state has horrible cyclical budget situations is that we rely heavily on capital gains tax revenues/stock option cashing income revenue/financial market revenues from our wealthy residents (e.g. silicon valley millionaires, etc). When the markets do well, we do well. When they go south...we go south. We overtax our wealthy and our lower classes pay nothing in taxes. Therefore, we get boom and bust cycles.

The recall was in 2003. What happened a couple years before? The tech bubble popped and the market collapsed.

Our economy is also heavily influenced by real estate. We go through boom and bust real estate cycles regularly. Home building, construction, trades are huge economic drivers. When the housing market boomed along with the stock market the state started to get back on its feet. What happened in 2007-08?

Our housing market got annihilated. It collapsed. The stock market got hammered.

Arnold was governor from late 2003-2010.

The person criticizing Arnold...who I am no fan of...never voted for and think is a piece of ####...really doesn't know what they are talking about.

Never mind the fact that Democrats have controlled both chambers of our legislature for my entire life...literally 40 years. They pass the budget. They pass a multitude of things that influence spending.

Moreover, our public employee unions, including teachers, are very strong. In fact, there was an initiative passed in the late 1990s or early 2000s that required X percent of the state budget to go to education and that it always went up with each increasing year of revenues...but could never be reduced when revenues decreased, etc.

And though it is beyond the scope of what I want to get into tonight...when you factor in the underfunded pension obligations there is a structural deficit issue that is being papered over with smoke and mirrors as Moonbeam kicks the can down the street. Arnold tried to reign in the pension nightmare and was savagely fought on that by Democrats and the unions.

Yeah it was a real #### show when they got that criminal Gray out of there. That ballot was open to anyone and it was a circus. Mary Kary, Gary Coleman were running, The candidates were junk. Arnold made some tough calls and ticked off about everyone. No one likes it to be their school, hospital or fire department that gets closed because there is no money.

My thoughts on Arnold was he like a interim coach. Yeah he was a below average coach, but his team was utter trash to start with. It was a no win situation.

We overtax our wealthy and our lower classes pay nothing in taxes.
Every poor person pays taxes.  They may not pay income tax, but they pay sales tax, and gas tax, and social security and medicare, etc.  And while the more fortunate among us can largely ignore the added costs those taxes impose, for the poor its a significant proportion of their income and of what they need to subsist.  But hey, sometimes a VC has to wait a month to buy his new yacht, that's the real problem.

Saw those ad's this morning and the GOP can go #### themselves.

I am going to change to an independent. This party is dead.....dead dead dead to me. Bunch of ####### morons. They have no clue of reality anymore (nor have they for 15 years and counting).

The one guy finally getting momentum to possibly (but not likely) upset Trump in Ohio and take away some key votes in Florida and who is a reasonable moderate candidate and not some crazy bible belt freak and they are starting thrash him.

Screw this party. Glad I early voted for Kasich and voted my conscience. But the GOP can choke on Trump steak for all I care. Seriously.

Kasich's expansion of Medicaid is a deal-breaker for many conservatives.
My sister in-law would be dead if not for Medicad. I am shocked at the attitudes of people in my social economic level on helping the sick and poor. Those are the ones who really need it.

What we should focus on is cleaning up the fraud in the system that puts a heavy burden on us the tax payers. Focus on the people who are obviously abusing the system and fix it. But taking away benefits helps no one. It defeats the purpose. Medicad is a life saver for those who truly need it.

I am so sick of the so-called conservatives who think we live in the 1950's still. They have destroyed the Republican party.

Being fiscally responsible and socially conscience is a lost art. WTF is going on in our country?

At this point, you could make a reasonably convincing case for every candidate except Kasich being a secret Democratic plant out to destroy the Republican party.

Why?  Because Kasich has no charisma and comes across as a Nixon type nervous wreck on tv.  The hands chopping all over the place, the odds facial gestures...  We have a lot of very smart people in this forum who look past all this and focus on the obvious intelligence and maturity of the guy, but we are the exceptions.  People in general are heavily influenced by what they see, and Kasich just doesn't project very well.  He doesn't draw you in.  He doesn't inspire.  He doesn't come across as a leader of men.  Probably a great #2 guy, but not a leader imo.  And that's why he is trailing in the polls.

Says a lot of Trump supporters that can't bring themselves to vote for Hilary.

If that's the Q this is the A: Our leaders are being chosen for us.

Yep.....but boy..he looks like a beacon of light next to the other 3 clowns in his party and a rock star next to the democratic #### show.

It's futile this election cycle. I am resigned to the fact we will have a Trump vs Hillary election. Oh the media is getting so horny with this!!!!!!

He does stand out as the only adult at the table, no doubt.  But he really hasn't been challenged yet because he hasn't been a threat.  I'm sure there are some weak points that we haven't even seen yet because he hasn't been thoroughly vetted.  I mean Jesus - he worked at Lehman Brothers from 2001 until the firm's collapse in 2008.

I can't guarantee that this has affected Kasich's views, but when I met my wife her roommate worked for Kasich on Capital Hill.  Christine had cystic fibrosis.  Christine's father, who had been the VP of a small but growing company in Ohio was let go because Christine's medical bills would effect everyone's premiums.  Her father ended up not being able to take jobs he was qualified for because doing so would leave the family ineligible for Medicaid.

Now, I think a lot of Kasich's plans are typical Republican balderdash (the ordinary citizens regulatory review panels seem particularly silly).  And I don't think he's as moderate as some people think.  But he was, apparently, a good boss.  Which is something.

I wouldn't call SS and medicare a tax.  I believe a person making about $20K a year with a child pays zero income tax and actually gets back about $2,000 - $4,000 when they do their taxes.  That's like welfare in my opinion, and more than offsets any sales or car taxes they would pay during the year.  So I'm not sure your argument holds water that the poor pay a more significant proportion of their income.

LOL my oh my. Bernie would have have a field day with him......but it will never happen. Good point on the lack of vetting.

This is Trumps party. He is winning the nomination. So I think any talk of a brokered campaign is kind of silly. If Trump wins Florida (which is very likely) it's over for Kasich and Creepy Cruz.

Trump and Cruz are too extreme, Rubio is too inexperienced and weak. That leaves Kasich. He's no Romney, but he's the best of what's left.

I don't understand all the chubbies some of you guys are sporting for Kasich

I don't understand all the chubbies some of you guys are sporting  for Kasich
It clearly shows how bad the field is man. The other 3 guys are total clowns and are clearly toxic.

He is the only adult in the room.

But if your all aboard the Trump train....have fun. It is certainly entertaining me in a comedic manner. I crack up at almost every press conference he gives. He really is a funny guy.....like a clown in the circus funny. Joe Pesci should endorse him. And his followers egging him to do this "raise your hand take a pledge of allegiance to Trump" crap? That really took the cake for me. I mean this is lunacy now. He should be pledging his allegiance to the country and the honor of holding the most prestigious office in the world. If (and that is a huge if) he becomes President....we have pissed all over the history of this office putting a clown like Trump into the White House. I am not saying we have not put in bad Presidents before....history is lined with bad Presidents. But this one is obvious and the most un-presidential candidate in our lifetime thus far. I would hope adults with any sense of common sense and just a smidgen of intelligence can see Trump is not fit for this most prestigious and highly honored office. He has zero form.

He comes across like a used car salesman much like Creepy Cruz and Robotic Marco.

God LMFAO. I can't believe it has gone this far. But then you look at the other clowns in the circus clown car (Rubio and Cruz) and I can see why!!! And look at the state of this country in regards to social media, reality TV......I can see why this is happening. Hopefully the side show that has become the Republican party can be put down and the party can reform and rally 4 years from now. I think this is the final nail in the coffin for the tea party and extreme conservative right. And I can thank Donald Trump for at least showing how bad it has become. He accomplished that important goal. He is destroying this party (and I am fine with that). But this is far enough for me. I can't in good conscience vote in the general election this year.

Clinton? Trump? It's a farce. I hope the 4 years can go by and hopefully whomever wins won't do much damage and the the adults can reset and come forward in the next election cycle. Because I am mortified how bad it has gotten here. It's mind boggling.

But hey who knows.....if The Donald wins and does a good job we can rejoice!!!! But I doubt it. Hope I am wrong.

Why are you blaming a political party for what super pac is doing on behalf of a particular candidate? I mean...I can think of a million reasons to hate the GOP right now if you are a Republican. This isn't one of them.

If you think Trump has leaderlike qualities, you haven't been led by the right people.

Being louder than everyone and not afraid to say controversial statements does not a leader make.  The mere fact that he still calls Rubio "Little Marco" is enough to show you what kind of character the ######## has.

You are confusing leader with good leader.  Trump is most definitely a leader.

This is why I have grown tiresome of the FFA.

You can put a fairly thoughtful post together and explain some stuff in detail, and the response you get is something like this. Thanks for contributing. Without your post I would have had no idea that poor people pay sales and gas taxes. Never mind the fact that most of the sales taxes paid by residents go to local cities and counties for their funding.

What this has to do with the discussion is beyond me because the topic was the California budget and the structural deficiencies within it that create boom and bust cyclical budgeting surpluses and deficits.

I mean...it would have been cool if you offered up something constructive...like...oh I dunno...under Moonbeam we have released thousands of prisoners from prisons. Or under Moonbeam he has passed the buck and transferred thousands upon thousands of parolees to the county level where they are now supervised by probation officers and the costs are now shouldered in large part at the local level.

But...nope...we get poor people pay taxes, too. Fan####ingtastic. That was awesome.

Do you know what percentage of the state budget is comprised of sales tax revenue? Do you know what percentage is comprised of personal income taxes?

Around 22% of the state budget is comprised of sales tax revenue. Around 66% of the state budget comes from personal income taxes and that the tax rate on personal income is progressive on the rich in the state...you begin to see that it creates some problems of a cyclical nature.

P.S. I am going to let you in on a little secret. It is almost as awesome as your point. The rich...they pay sales taxes, too...a lot of it.

This is a product of Today's GOP party which does not represent moderate Republicans. This is the party right now. It is a super pac against Trump yet are runing slime ad's against a guy whop can actually win a monster state (Ohio)

The GOP is in complete disarray.
