*****Official 2016 Kentucky Derby Thread***** (3 Viewers)

Kinda glad I didn't go seeing how mobbed Monmouth is. 1/9 - no money to be made on AP. I'd box the 1-2-4 in the tri and exacta. Probably box the 6 as well in same. And the $2 souvenir on AP

Me not buying those Breeders Cup tickets that I was going to are stinging more and more. Keeneland is going to be a top notch venue for it this year.

Missed your Saratoga post

All news about him has been in this thread so I just did a quick search and posted it here

You were first

Congrats

Shared Belief will beat AP if he runs in the Classic.
I sincerely doubt 1) Shared Belief coming off that bad of a hip injury will run in the Classic 2) be fit enough to come in off works alone or 1 prep to seriously contend if he does.

I'm a huge SB fan. But on his best day AP blows him away. That was an owner who didn't listen to his trainer yesterday. AP won so easily in the Haskell that Zayat thought he was invincible. 2 cross country trips in 3 weeks was stupid. The owner got the horse beat. Now he might not even run in the Classic, though I think he will.

Heading to Keeneland for Breeders' Cup action Saturday. Actually have tickets for both days, but looking like I'm going to have to work Friday. Should be an interesting environment...

My mother and my aunt are going. Should be a blast, including AP's last run.

Enjoy!

Is there a thread for this year?

I'm still watching even if I'm bummed American pharaohs can't attempt to repeat

I haven't had the same interest as I have had in years past...not really sure why.  hopefully it'll ramp up for me these next few weeks

Every year tv shows less & less races going up to the Derby. When ESPN had the rights it seemed like there was a lot more pre-coverage.

Florida Derby, where Nyquist dusted my early fave Mohaymen

Mohaymen from the 9 hole did not have the best of trips, but this Nyquist is an immense talent  -  a lil' green down the stretch here, but he went and got it.  glad that O'Neill shipped him to Florida to make this battle of the undefeated early favorites possible.

O'Neill/Gutierrez connection shined 4 years ago with I'll Have Another, and i think Nyquist looks more formidable at this stage than the 2012 Derby/Preakness winner.

will not jump off Mohaymen, though ... may use him as my key come Derby day.

I saw Destin run in the Tampa Derby. Tampa Bay Downs is a really "cuppy" track (meaning it's almost like running on a beach for a horse), but Destin looked like he had zero issues whatsoever.

I don't know how that will translate to Churchill, or if the Tampa Derby is any indication of Kentucky Derby success, but I'll probably throw some money on him.

It was just a maiden race, but he also won his debut at Belmont last year. You should get decent odds in this big field.

hosting a Derby party this year. Need to figure out a simple but fun way for the adults to gamble on the cheap since it's a family party. Leaning toward selling squares like a super bowl pool but for exacta boxes...that's 190 squares if a full set of 20 horses run. I know nothing about this year's horses - might as well just make it random fun.

Hat game.

Put five bucks in, draw the name out of the hat.  Winner 80, runner up 20.

Of course I always recommend having betting slips having the odds posted and taking bets like a casino.

You'll have some skin in the game. Most likely you as the house will win. But maybe you will lose a couple hundred if a popular long shot hits, it's all good.

Found this site. One cool option is to basically set up the entire derby like a big auction where people can bid on whether a given horse will win place or show. Then whichever horse ends up win/place/show, the person who bid on the correct answer wins all the bets in the W/P/S board. Could take a little while to do, but seems like a lot of fun. I'm considering it for mine

How would you do the box for 190?  That assumes (I think) that each box gets the pair of horses so it doesn't matter what order they finish in.  I'd have to think about whether you could draw a grid for that or if you'd have to make 190 squares for people to draw out of a hat.

If you want to do a grid without boxing the horses (i.e. finish order does matter) then one way to do it will be to construct a 20x20 square.  The main difference with a superbowl square is that when drawing numbers, each horse will occupy the same spot in the horizontal and vertical axes.  So if Destin is the first horse drawn, he will have the first row and first column with box 1,1 xed out.  Obviously your guests will fill in their squares before drawing horses and you will have to decide which axis will represent the winner.  There will be 380 squares (20x20 - 20 x'ed out squares) up for grabs so you'll need to take that into account.

I'm probably dumb, but how would you set this up? If people fill in their boxes before the numbers are drawn, then what happens if someone gets a box where the 12 horse meets the 12 horse? Do they just get their money back, or do you draw the numbers first and then have people fill in the boxes?

ETA: One thought would be to have people pick numbers from 1-190 to fill in the boxes, and if they pick box #79 but box #79 has an impossible outcome (the 12 winning and the 12 placing), then maybe just give them the next box over?

See above.

right...so I thought I'd cut the number in half and box them. That does mean I need to make 190 square combinations to draw instead of writing names on the squares...but I think I'd have better luck selling all of them to avoid a messy carry over. It's going to be about a dozen adults...I suppose I could do a quarter per square on a full grid (planning 50 cents per spot on the box grid...$95 to the winner).

See above.
Great minds and all that... :)

So another thought would be to have a reverse or a touch option. Maybe set up the grid and the left side is the "win" section and the top line is the "place" section. If the 1 horse wins and the 2 horse places, you would technically have two winners there if you don't designate which line is win or place. So maybe you give a little extra to the person whose winning horse was actually on the "win" side. And then maybe give a couple bucks to anybody whose boxes are touching either of the winning boxes. I'm admittedly not looking at a grid right now so I have no idea if these logistics even work and I'm missing something important haha.

- buddy of mine runs a very simple pool each year .... numbers drawn (1-20) at random, each costing $100 per.

first place horse pays $1500, last place horse pays $500.

no rake.

I'd love to brag that "My horse ran last in the Derby and I won $500!"
