Never got the Jones love. Where is Vick?
There's Jones love?

Vick was several degrees of suckitude beyond Jones last year. Just atrocious. Jones was uneven.

I feel like Jones takes too much flak though. If Ben goes down in week 3 or 4 again, there's literally no one currently "on the street" that's going to be able to run the offense better than Jones will. They're going to need to spend a higher draft pick at some point to get a guy to one day fill Ben's shoes (and serve as the #2 behind him until that day comes) , but for now, Jones is the best option we've got. There's no cap room to go after the Fitzpatricks of the world when they become available. Ben makes so much dough that they're essentially maxed out at that position. Picking up a guy that gets cut like a Bryce Petty, EJ Manuel, etc doesn't put us in any better position if Ben gets hurt.

We just need to PRAY he doesn't.

People were suddenly in love with his last season.

I dont disagree with you though. My Vick comment was facetious.

Does anybody else think that Lolley is a total know it all ####### in his q & a chat things?  One reason i said there was Jones love was because of his comments about him recently.

If you are saying that people liked Landry Jones because they despised watching Michael Vick then that is the ultimate in faint praise.

Even if you pick up a FA in the final cut he is going to need some time to learn the offense.  They'll need a backup that knows the system for the first couple of weeks so  "Dirty" Laundry Jones is likely here to stay.

Landry was pretty bad, but I think Coates and Cobi Hamilton had pretty bad games themselves. Not trying to completely absolve Jones but ATLEAST 2 of those interceptions were caused by misplays by Coates and Hamilton.

Coates may be a practice superstar but I have yet to see it translate to gameday (aside from a couple nice catches in the NFL divisional)

Agreed.  I am much more worried about Coates than I am Jones.

I am as well - alot of fantasy experts, who frankly I think do not watch Steelers with any regularity, have Coates at #2 over Wheaton already, which I think is nuts at this stage of the game. Coates has cobbled 2 sub-par efforts so far in the preseason, and outside of a nice toe-tapping first down reception has done virtually nothing in games yet to justify being #3 over DHB, let alone #2 over Wheaton. I thought Eli Rogers has looked much more polished in game opportunities thus far. Coates has made many poor-effort attempts that have gotten the ball picked off or flat-out dropped, or even fumbled.

Granted, Coates does have Landry throwing to him right now, so I guess we'll see when Ben is in there, but Coates' play so far does not inspire ANY confidence that he is ready for a top 2 or even a top 3 role yet.

I think Wheaton is the type of WR that will always be looking over his shoulder at another WR.

I think this is the general consensus among the people of FBG, but in my opinion I think this is simply not true - he had a really nice 6 game stretch run at the end of last year WITH Martavis in the fold AND Ben actually healthy. One of those games if you recall was the 200 yd thrashing of Seattle's secondary.

Ben really likes Wheaton and he has filled in the Hines Ward role quite nicely - I think with Ladarius Out, Heath Retired and AB constantly double teamed, Wheaton will be counted on for more quick, intermediary passes to keep sticks moving, and also still be a decent downfield threat.

I have a feeling he'll get alot of looks in the red zone too.

Agree, the pick 6 was 100% on Coates, horrible route.

Are Scott Mitchell or Brad Johnson available? They should already be contacting the Jets about Geno or Bryce Petty. To be fair Jones did do the simple task of getting the ball to AB better then Vick last year.

I say just roll with it as is. If Big Ben get's hurt bad enough to end his year we don't have a shot, no matter who we sign now. Don't waste the cap space like we did last year with Kickers.

Also, Landry will probably be much better with Wheaton, Brown, Bell and Deangelo...

I think if they cut Grad before week 1 they'll get $885,000 back in cap space which will likely be enough or close to enough to sign a backup QB.

Any info on Bell.

suspension hearing?

hows his knee? media reports he's moving like 2014 Bell.

Trying to figure how high I need to get him!

no worries boys, driving out to Pittsburgh now to try out for the qb position...

I played it in pop warner, and can throw a great out route on madden so how hard could it possible be?

cant be any worse than dandry jones

Now to see about getting mfl to add "ebsteelers" so I can make a speculative add...

A hole on ESPN radio as they were going to commercial made it found like suspension was dropped . Then they come back & say reduced to 3. Big whoop. I hate espn!

Sure seems to be a lot of Coates bashing for Landry's INTs, but very few were harping on Bryant for causing several of Ben's picks last year.  They are nearly the same player.  Only difference is when Bryant screws up, it's usually for poor effort when he thinks he's not part of the play or a mental error.  Coates seems to be making more physical errors.  Both are very big, fast, strong, big play WRs that are fairly inconsistent.  Would you rather have the guy suspended for the year and half-assing some plays, or the guy who works hard but seemingly has butter-fingers?

Coates has a heck of a lot to prove before you can say he is nearly the same player as Bryant.

I really don't want to pick between either.  You need receivers that can both comply with the league's rules and be able to run routes and catch the ball. If they can't do both they aren't worth much.

That said I am not given up on Coates. He is young and raw but he needs to get his crap together soon if he is going to be any use to this team.  He has a golden opportunity, let's hope he makes the best of it.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Pittsburgh Steelers announced Saturday that they had signed a quarterback and a guard.

The Steelers have signed quarterback Bryn Renner and guard Antoine Everett.
Apparently just an arm for pre-season since Vaughn is injured.

Rumor is Steelers are looking at Lewis. I see no harm in it if they can get him near the minimum. Especially after the Brandon Boykin experiment last year.

My point was as much about the lack of patience for Coates as it was for the abundance of praise for Bryant.  Even Bryant's on field screw ups were seemingly brushed under the rug.  I was losing patience for his play long before his suspension.

Bryant was capable of making amazing plays with the ball in his hands, but IMO was barely an adequate WR similar to Cordarrelle Patterson (though I admit, a big step up).  He often ran lazy routes when he wasn't the primary receiver, leading to quite a few of Ben's INTs last year and nobody batted an eye.  His hands are only average and his off the field problems are showing his lack of judgement, maturity and commitment.  Coates is also a strength / size / speed freak similar to Bryant but with below average hands.  That was my comment about them being similar.

I agree with you, and Bryant would drive me nuts sometimes.  However, a few plays later, he'd make a play in the open field that only a handful of receivers in the NFL can make.  You take the good with the bad.  I think if Coates flashes similar playmaking potential this year, his transgressions will be forgiven more quickly as well.

Compared to Bryant, I don't see the same explosiveness from Coates.  He may improve, and help our team at times, but I don't see him making those splash plays like Bryant could.

I think Eli will surprise a lot of people.  I think he starts Week 1 over Coates.

As a slot WR, yes!  If Brown or Wheaton were to go down, I think Coates would be the next guy up on the outside unless his game tape continues to defy his practice reports, in which case DHB would go to the outside spot.  A #3 as a flanker, but not necessarily the 3rd WR on the field.

We may see a lot of Rogers on 3rd downs too, especially in 4 WR sets.  The guy runs sharp routes and has good hands and some wiggle to him, I think he could be a key  in converting 3rd-and-medium and 3rd-and-long situations.

Steelers freed up more than $2 Million of cap space by restructuring Marcus Gilbert.  Hopefully this means a DeCastro signing is imminent.

I don't know that one has anything to do with the other.  It may mean they feel the need to go outside for a corner, TE, or QB.

At this point I don't see them breaking the bank on either a TE or QB.   They may sign a late cut but most likely after week 1 so the contract isn't guaranteed.

ETA:  If they sign a QB they'll almost certainly cut Grad which would result $885k additional cap space.  I'm not sure of the ramifications of cutting Green.

I think re-signing DeCastro is more important
Sure, I just don't know that this move has anything to do with that.  I believe that a long-term deal for DD would likely lower his immediate cap hit, not increase it.  Typically, a restructure is done to clear immediate cap space, so I would think that they're doing it in order to add a player or two that isn't currently under contract.  Just my guess.
