Official 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

I know Ben is awesome and the Steelers cant win a superbowl without him, but why didnt the Steelers try to establish the running game immediately against a bad run D?  Use Bell and DWill early to setup play action and all that... control time of possession in the heat so your D isnt gassed by the end of the game.  They just get too cute at times.

One of the softest teams in the league. You don't see this many injuries on any other team. Starting with shazier the porcelain doll, can't rely on pu@@us like that. Mitchell is a mental midget & needs to go, absolute buffoon

I had a few beers yesterday so my memory may be wrong but it seemed to me they did come out trying to run but weren't getting anywhere.   As great as the offensive line played last week they were pitiful yesterday.   The Dolphins were really fired up and the o-line was bullied like little nerdy kids in the playground.

The Steelers should have beaten this team silly.  Instead they were beaten physically on both sides of the ball.  With so many injuries and so little toughness I don't see how they'll be able to hang with the Patriots next week.

New england may beat them by 50 next week & that's not exagerrating. They won't score more than 6 points with the mannequin Landry Jones at qb.

I don't know.  Bell and Dwill combined for only 13 rushes in the entire game and Bell had 5.3 ypc.  I guess it doesnt matter too much either way, they sucked yesterday and put on another terrible road performance against an inferior opponent.  I really thought they had turned the corner and chalked up the PHI game to "it happens".  Unfortunately, it happens to this team way too frequently  :X  <-- no, thats not Timmons

I'm beginning to think the defensive players aren't to blame, and that the coaching is.  Not sure if it's the defensive coaches as a whole, or individual ones.  The Steelers have some good players on defense, and I believe their being exposed has nothing to do with their talents, but the blame lies on the coaching instead.

I'm glad I'm traveling next Sunday and will likely have to miss the game.  It's going to be ugly.
yes it will be...Steelers should just run the full house backfield with Bell, Williams and Nix all game and run the clock down between each play. Only throw on 3rd and 5 or longer.

Maybe a few screens to AB to mix it up.

Landry would still find a way to throw a couple picks, somehow.

Surgery this morning for Ben.  Claiming it was just the "cleanup" variety of procedure rather than a full "repair" so it's at least possible he could come back week 9 after the by, where the rehab/recovery from a full repair would potentially be months.

Of course, if they drop 3 straight without him then rushing him back is probably a pretty stupid thing to do anyway.  I expect he's gone, at minimum, a month.  So, three games with Landry calling the plays vs. Patriots/Ravens/Cowboys?  Yeah, I don't see any wins there.

We have one guy on the entire team that has generated any pass rush... and he was OUT for the game.

I think it's safe to say playoffs are in jeopardy. I know its early but right now they are guaranteed to be 4-5 before Ben even comes back. they have no chance in he@@ of winning next 3 with Landry & that atrocious defense. Let's see who has been wadted defensive picks in recent drafts....senquez, Dupree, shazier, etc etc etc

I thought I was a pessimist.  irish eyes takes the cake.

We still hold the lead in the AFCN.  Ben may miss just one game with the advantage of the bye.

Yeah, Landry Jones sucks and we will probably get killed by the Patriots and have no shot at home field advantage...but I still think we are the odds on favorite to win the AFCN.

An interview shared by Ed Werder of ESPN, taken from a Pittsburgh newspaper, shedding light on the fact that Roethlisberger's news from the doctor could mean he's out a little longer than is generally required from a surgery of this type:

The quote from Big Ben reads:

"'Doc says my knee looked good, but there was still some stuff in there from when I had my bone bruise last season in St. Louis,' Roethlisberger said Tuesday from his North Hills home. 'He said that might keep me out a little longer than just a simple meniscus tear. Maybe an extra week or so. But there's no way to put an exact timetable on it...It depends on my pain and how I feel.'"

Chris Mortenson just reported that Ben may be out 4-6 weeks.

Sell on AB now. Hasn't scored a TD without Ben. Bell seemed to do just fine without him.

Coates is on my drop list where before he was on my high upside stash/flex list. Would like more info on how Landry tendencies go - especially around the deep ball - but no one can replace Bens ability to chuck it long. Can't see value there as, say, AB holds value regardless of who is under center.

Well we knew Ben would be out 2 weeks:  this week and the bye week.   Almost certainly 4-3 going into the bte.

Week 9 has us playing Baltimore on the road.  It would be a tough win with Landry Jones but not out of the question.   At the very worst 4-4 with next week we play at home against the Cowboys.  The schedule gets much easier after that.

Even with Ben out, I think the team that played last night can beat 60% of the teams in the league.

I'm more worried about the team's play on the road vs. home at this point.

The remainder of our schedule isn't that tough.  Get healthy and get back on the horse.

This team should still make the playoffs...and if they're healthy then, look out.

Just looking for insight here:

- What do you Steeler watchers think of Coates with Ben coming back? My main concern is the injury then his role.

I guess he should be over the injury and then also it seemed like DHB had moved into the No. 2 role during the time Ben's been out.

Any thoughts on this? Obviously I'm just trying to figure what to do with Coates. Thanks.

I think the DHB promotion has more to do with Wheaton and Rogers than it does with Coates.   Wheaton has been a big let down and Rogers was recently benched by Tomlin for disciplinary reasons so I think it was a wake up call more than anything.  Coates has proven to be a play maker and his lack of production has been due to nagging injuries.

He has been practicing all week and is not on the injury list so he should be good to go and if Ben plays I think it is reasonable to expect a decent game from Coates considering the Ravens secondary is shaky.

Is the base offense start three wideouts? Rotoworld mentioned DHB passed Wheaton and would start along side Antonio and Coates. What do they do when only two wide, at whose expense? Same for rogers in the slot, at whose expense?

Always depends on what Steelers offense shows up for the game. The Steelers seem to be electric at home and not so much on the road. They were completely shut down in Philly and in Miami, remember. If the offense is clicking, I see no reason why Coates wouldn't have a decent game. They seemed to want to force feed him in the past to get him involved. He's going to be the 3rd option at best in this offense, behind Bell & Brown. Ladarius Green may be returning this week from the PUP list. But even if he does play, it should be for a limited amount since he hasn't played all season and has had very little practice time with the team. There was a lot of hope and promise about Green in this offense so he could eventually emerge as the #3 option if that all works out.

Good points.   The latest report that I heard is that Green will likely be inactive for this game.

I wouldn't trust that Coates (as much as I like him) will make much of a comeback. Granted he didn't tear his stitches as much this weekend as the last couple, but for a WR with suspect hands dealing with multiple, non-dominant hand injuries, I'd give him another week or two to be a fantasy option. Here's hoping Greene's return is worth a couple of Coates' targets.

They also have no pass rush, other than some push from the big dudes up the middle. Suggs had one decent game and has basically been a non-entity in the rest of them. Dumervil hasn't played. And the rookies they drafted to add "edge speed" haven't done anything (one is on IR & I think the other may have moved to Tibet). Blitzing hasn't worked.

And, keep in mind, this has all been against bad QBs (other than Carr). If Ben plays anywhere close to "normal Ben", and Baltimore doesn't do any better at getting to the QB, he will eat them alive. Brown will go off, as usual. Coates and DHB could both have some big plays. The Ravens LBs are horrible in coverage, so I'd expect some nice plays out of the TE too.

In addition - I know this discussion has been mostly about pass catchers - the Ravens have been very good against the run, though they haven't faced anyone yet as good as either Bell or Williams. Crowell got one flukey, long run in the Cleveland game. Other than that, there's not been much. I could see Bell with 5 or 6 catches and busting at least one big play as a receiver (see: above about Ravens LBs in open space).

That's the worst display of football I've seen in a long time. Poor tackling, no discipline, inept coaching. Same old Tomlin inexcusable crap. It's maddening.

I know we have seen it tons of times in his career after big injuries but Ben has no business in this game.  He has no mobility and looks complete unprepared.   Because Ben is so weak now the defense can put all of their efforts to stopping Leveon

I wonder if Sullivan can the leave the penguins and coach the steelers. He wouldn't put up with lazy, soft undisciplined players like tomlin does. As I type blocked punt for TD. Keep it up tomlin and players, you should all be embarrassed to return to Pittsburgh. This is not a playoff team folks, and if by a miracle they make it they will get run out of the building. Dallas may beat them by 40.

Well, three road games in a row that Pitt has come out flat and fell on their faces.  Home field advantage isn't going to happen now so a playoff run is doubtful.  How much longer is Ben's window open?

The play calling and execution was just shockingly bad in the first half.  I didn't watch the 2nd half so I can't speak to that but I imagine it was more of the same.  I don't know what happens to this team on the road but it's maddening.  I don't think this is a playoff team even if Ben plays the rest of the year.  They don't have the weapons on offense that many of us thought they would.  Outside of Brown and Bell, there is nothing that defenses will fear.  The Bryant suspension is turning to be huge.  Maybe Coates would have been the answer but he's just not healthy.

I think they need to find their future QB in the next draft.  They can't expect more than 2 or 3 years out of Ben.  All these injuries over the years will have to catch up to him soon.

At this rate they may end up with a bad enough record to draft or trade up for a franchise QB.
Nah.  I don't know that they can win going through NE, but Ben was less than good today, as was the play calling.  They just got Heyward and Tuitt back in the lineup.  They couldn't have been 100% yet.  Shazier back really helped.  I thought Rodgers was going to be in the game plan today but they seemed to forget about him until the 4th Q.  Coates will also be getting healthier and maybe if Wheaton and Greene get on the field they can also help.  Like always, it's mostly about who is the healthiest going into January.  Dupree should be close to returning too, no?

Yup again I missed the 2nd half but it looks like the defense actually played well given how poorly the offense played.  I guess there is some optimism if this team can somehow get healthy later in the year.  Other than N.E., anyone in the AFC is beatable.  The problem is that this team never shows up on the road.  Guess where they'll be playing in the playoffs (if they make it)        Also, I don't have the same faith that you have in their other WRs.  I think we're missing a lot with Bryant out and it's showing this year.

There is very little optimism in my house after that game. The hubris that led the Steelers to ignore their most glaring need, at safety, resulted in the travesty that is Mike Mitchell. He should be cut tomorrow. The discipline of this team is nonexistent. The defense is soft against the run and generally plays passively. The special teams looked like special needs in the most comically onside kick attempt I've ever seen.

If we had a coach who could fix things and make corrections, I'd be optimistic. But Tomlin is all talk and very little action. F em all, bunch of overpaid frauds.

Pathetic offensive display through 3+ quarters of football.   Blame is on the coaching staff #1 but Ben was lousy as was the offensive line.   Absolutely no push and zero holes to run through.   B.J. Finney was a disaster -- they better hope that china doll Pouncey is back next week.  Zero 3rd down coversions in the first three quarters of football is an embarrassment.

And don't get me started on the penalties.

The defense actually played ok outside of the missed tackle on the Wallace TD and a few plays here and there (although they were aided by a Ravens team that was pretty pathetic in their own right).

And I have no idea what Sean Davis thought he was doing on the blocked punt.  He just ran by the Ravens defender and gave the defender a free pass to the punter.

I am not one calling for Tomlin's head but he deserves all the criticism that will be coming his way.   2 weeks to prepare for a team that had lost 4 in a row and that's the best you can do????  Sickening...

The ONLY saving grace is they play in a horrible division.

just when you think it's over they will come back and play well against the Cowboys just to mask the fact that they are no longer able to compete for a Superbowl with such inept coaching.

Ben is always bad first game back from an injury.  I guess it is good to get that one out of the way.

The penalties have got to stop.  That was just unacceptable.

The conservative play calling through three quarters is maddening and confounding.

Still, the best news is the fact that our division is pretty weak and still imminently winnable.

I know I have been labled pessimistic but tell me exactly what there is that's positive? Year after year the same bull sh@@ lazy, unpreparedness shows up. Now you add them being a soft team on top of that. Where does it start?? Apparently no one on that team is held accountable. And the most mind boggling comment in history by Tomlin at halftime yesterday when asked about Ben's performance...." I thought he was solid"....really, so was Tomlin attending a different NFL game yesterday. Dallas may rush for 300 next week, be prepared for another loooonnngg afternoon.
