***Official 2017-18 Hot Stove League Thread: Peter Bourjos & Ryan Flaherty are signs the end is near (1 Viewer)

Then you have people like Peter Gammons chirping that they don't believe baseball will ever work in Miami.  HAVE THEY EVER EVEN TRIED FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE YEARS?!

I mean, c'mon.

The prospects in the Ozuna trade are RHP Sandy Alcantara, OF Magneuris Sierra, RHP Zac Gallen, and LHP Daniel Castano.

Alcantara and Sierra both had cups of coffee with the big club in September but none of the four are top 100 prospects.  There's always the possibility of one of them breaking out but right now, this looks like the Marlins trading a quarter for four nickels.

Angels getting what’s left of Ian Kinsler
The Tigers get 18 year old Dominican pitcher Wilkel Hernandez and OF Troy Montgomery, a 2016 8th rounder from Ohio St. who'll probably start in AA.

Kinsler only has 1/$11M remaining plus a club option.  2B has been a disaster area in Anaheim since Howie Kendrick left.

Kinsler seems done to me.
He was first in UZR/150, 2nd in Def efficiency, and 2nd in DRS in all of baseball last year at 2B.  The year before he was better than that, and also had a .838 OPS.  He's on the downside but he's a max effort player who is still among the best defensively at his position, he has value.

For 1/$11M, Kinsler is a low risk, pickup.  Even in his worst year in 2017, he put up 2.1 rWAR.  If he can stay in the lineup, he's better than the Dannys and Johnnys the Anaheims have been sending out to play 2B.

Angels second basemen hit .207/.274/.318 last year.

Kinsler can repeat his awful  .236/.313/.412 from last year and still be a huge improvement.

Oakland gets Piscotty.

The Cardinals were legitimately cool to trade Piscotty to the A's, so he could be closer to his mom who has been diagnosed with ALS.

Piscotty signed an extension last year, so he's locked up for the next 5 years at a total of $32mm I think? Dunno who the prospects are.

Really a class act by the Cardinals. Good chance he can bounce back and be a sight bargain over the remainder of his contract and be a steady, albeit unsexy, contributer.

If they could actually find a passable catcher, this team could be a darkhorse WC contender going into the ASB.

So apparently the White Sox are interested in Machado but know that they have little chance of resigning him. The thought process is they wont have to give great prospects for him now but then can flip him to the Yankees at the trading deadline for better prospects as the Orioles dont want to deal him to the Yankees. I dunno. Sounds risky to me.

BTW I'd pass on Machado. Seems like a ######## to me, wants a $300-$400m deal, wants to play SS, will cost top prospects.

Will they be changing the name of the Rule 5 Draft to the "Poach the Yankees" Draft? Yankees players coming off the board at a crazy pace

Their system was so loaded they've been doing a lot of 2 for 1 trades just to try and protect some of these guys.

Any results for the minor league phase I can look at? I know someone who was hoping to get picked as he is having trouble getting promoted out of A ball.

Big fan of Piscotty.  Great swing.  In his splits, you can pretty much see when he found out about his mom's ALS diagnosis.  Probably a COF in the show but played 3B in college.

The prospects the A's gave up are a couple of AA middle infielders who don't seem like high-ceiling prospects, but the Cards need organizational depth up the middle.

Alcantara is only one of the four who has shown flashes of a breakout player.  His fastball is 98-99 and can make bats miss upstairs.  Cardinals tried to make him a starter but he's probably better suited as a closer or 8th inning man.  Sierra rose through the system because the organization is short on lefty bats in the outfield.  A more balanced org depth would have kept him in the minors.

:lmao:

LHP Anthony Gose is an intriguing Rule 5 pickup.
I heard this on the radio yesterday and at first was extremely underwhelmed by a 27 year old, never done anything OF prospect.

Until I heard he was now a pitcher, who has a 100mph fastball and is lefthanded.  WTF did he ever play OF for in the first place?

Good one year deal for the Angels..Kinsler still can play. I loved watching him in Detroit.  The guy comes to play everyday and is still a high end defender. Still think he will get back to the 280 range with 20-25 HRs.

The Hunter and Neshek contracts are front loaded with bonus money.  That's obviously attractive for the players but gives the Phillies much more latitude to trade them for prospects mid-season.  It's an interesting tactic for a large market club with virtually no money tied up in big contracts.

The Phils will be paying Santana through his age 34 season so there's not a huge risk of him becoming a boat anchor of a contract.

The biggest downside I see is losing the high 2nd & 5th round picks (and international bonus pool money) as compensation.

Rhys Hoskins to LF is the wild card.  He never played OF in the minors but played 30 games there for the Phillies in 2017.  I guess they saw enough potential to make the move.

The Moustakas market just shrunk as the Anaheims keep active and sign Cosart to learn how to play 3B. Just under $13 per over 3 years.

I don't know if Cozart's age 31 offensive breakout is sustainable but there weren't many other 3B options available, especially in the price range.

Can't wait to draft him and have him get hurt diving for a fly ball

I wonder if the Yankees kick the tires on Moose the more his market depresses.  His left-handedness at 3B would be a good fit.  Not sure if they have the $ for him and a SP, though.

ETA:  Plus he would block a potential Machado signing in FA.

Speaking of the Royals, been surprisingly quiet on the Lorenzo Cain front so far.  Wonder where he ends up?

The glove should transfer fine though. Its going to be hell getting something through that side of the Angles infield.

Machado supposedly in play with our White Sox too, but if there's one position they don't have in the pipeline, its 3B. Could see them making a 3/60ish run at him
