***Official 2017-18 Hot Stove League Thread: Peter Bourjos & Ryan Flaherty are signs the end is near (1 Viewer)

Arizona signs 34 year old Japanese RHP Yoshihisa Hirano who has over 150 career SV with the Orix Buffaloes.  The deal is 2/$6M plus incentives.  I doubt he'll close but the Diamondbacks bullpen is unsettled.

I saw somebody on Twitter the other day who said Hirano looks like a Japanese version of John Lackey, which I'll never be able to unsee now.

The Marlins just traded Christmas for two Arbor Days and a National French Fries Day to be named later.

Cleveland bets 2/$18M (plus a vesting option) on Yonder Alonso to do it again.

An age 30 power breakout is pretty rare.  His 2017 HR/FB% of 14.9% was over twice his career average and four times his 2015-16 mark.  His SO rate was also way up which suggests a change in approach.
He embraced sabremetrics and  the uppercut swing.

I can't believe Manfred had the stones to compare Houston's savvy moves to collect young talent to the Marlins fire sale where they made it known that they were slashing payroll and the returns were pennies on the dollar.
Astros made a great club, but not from trading away their best talent. Oswalt, pence, etc. went for peanuts.

Something finally happened!!

Wade Davis with a record contract to go to Colorado. 3 years at a bit over 17 million each season, with an automatic 4th if he closes 30 in year three.

Only 3 more weeks until we get another big name signing!

Things are heating up as the Twins sign the great nephew of Dr Jerry Buss, Nick to a minor league deal with an invite to ST

See... Now I'm torn. Jeter & New Marlins Ownership has pissed off Marlins Man.

Ah yes, Marlins Man. He's Laurence Leavy, a local attorney you've no doubt seen sitting behind home plate at every big game in every stadium, wearing a bright orange Marlins jersey. He's the team's self-styled and self-appointed biggest fan, and he announced at the town hall that he hasn't renewed the season tickets he has held since the Marlins were born in 1993.

"I’m very angry," Leavy said, according to Jackson. "This makes us miss Jeffrey Loria. Who would have thought that?"

As Leavy no doubt wanted, his speech at the town hall got national attention, in large part because he began by asking Jeter, "Do you know me?"

BREAKING NEWS:  The Hot Stove blockbuster we've all been waiting for

Andy McCullough‏  @McCulloughTimes   7 minutes ago

Sources: The Dodgers are close to finalizing a three-team trade that would bring LHP Scott Alexander to LA, send RHP Trevor Oaks to KC and send LHP Luis Avilan to White Sox.

The inclusion of Joakim Soria's contact in the KC/CHW/LA deal gives it potential fantasy significance  Soria is a proven closertm who is being paid accordingly by one or more of the three teams.  The Sox traded most of their bullpen pieces last season need somebody to finish games and Soria is flippable if he has a good first half.  His peripherals look pretty good on paper but if you followed the Royals last year, he was brutal with inherited runners.

The Dodgers get a nice lefty for their bullpen in Scott Alexander who should be an improvement over Luis Avilan but relievers are funny.

The prospects involved seem closer to the MLB level than in the typical trade.  It'll be interesting to see if any pan out :nerd:

It seems the Dodgers and White Sox both had a 40-man crunch, and Oaks and Peter may have been Rule 5 bait anyway.

Big fan of what our White Sox have done here. Take on some salary, give up blocked guy in system and both arms are flippable if healthy

Blue Jays acquired 3B Yangervis Solarte from the Padres for minor league OF Edward Olivares and minor league RHP Jared Carkuff.

Solarte is a career .267/.327/.419 hitter who has experience at all four infield spots, providing value to the Jays as a safeguard against injury prone infielders Troy Tulowitzki and Devon Travis if nothing else. Reports suggest the trade is not a precursor for a Josh Donaldson deal. The 30-year-old Solarte is under team control through 2020.

not sure this is the way to go about getting Hosmer in the fold.

WHosmer?

Edward Olivares is an intriguing long-term prospect headed to San Diego.  He flashed power and speed as a 21 year old in low A but wasn't regarded as a top prospect in the Toronto organization.

The Padres don't have much of a track record with developing bats but they're perpetually rebuilding unless you're expecting breakouts from Galvis and Headley.

Given that Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney got 821 plate appearances filling in for the (always) injured Tulo/Travis and were well below replacement level, the Solarte/Diaz pickups might acutally equate to a marginal win or two for the Jays this coming season. See you later 81-81, we're going 83-79!! :excited:

Not really a hot stove thing, but the 30 for 30 podcast ‘The Lights Of Wrigleyville’ is a great listen. Especially if you’re from, or familiar with, 1980s Chicago

Cole to the Astros is "imminent"

Forrest Whitley is apparently untouchable. Somehow I expect the Pirates will get the pupu platter.

That's pretty amazing, and I hate him for it.  I want to turn talking about WAR into running the Cardinals (plot twist, I would intentionally tank that franchise).
He's pooped on Preller quite a bit in the past, so credit to the Pads I guess for being willing to take on people who haven't necessarily shared the same, dumb perspective that they've had.

When the Padres win the NL West, I'll never bring up this article again

One month until pitchers and catchers report and we're talking about middle management hires for the Padres.
