Moran was a first rounder who killed the minors and looked great when called up... until they broke his face on a foul, but he's blocked by Bregman at 3rd for at least 12 years. I like Musgrove a lot. Last year Feliz was a top 3 Astros prospect. I would have rather traded McHugh than Musgrove, but Pit probably wanted cost-controlled youth. With last years stats and overall trajectory, its not like Cole is a sure thing.

Yeah I don't think he's anything special. 4+ era in nl, 31 home runs allowed BUT the rumor was Yankees were offering Frazier AND Adams and pirates wanted Torres and to see them settle for this is quite shocking.

Yeah, it sorts of seems like they wanted the Yanks to pay an unreasonable premium and then took a crappy package when they balked and the market fell apart.
Agree that Cole isn't likely to be a world beater, but getting whoever these guys are instead of Frazier and Adams makes them look pretty stupid.

Yeah, they can't try him in CF there. Giants look like an extremely expensive 84 win team right now, but I guess if the pitching rebounds they can chase down the other NL wild card contenders.

Kyle Crick and Bryan Reynolds are the Giants farmhands headed to Pittsburgh.
Crick was a 1st rounder in 2011 but has been passed by other young arms in the organization. He's a lefty who's struggled with the strike zone. The Giants switched him to the bullpen in 2017 and he was effective in AAA. Maybe Ray Searage can do some magic on him unless the Pirates have traded him too.
Reynolds was a 2016 2nd rounder out of Vanderbilt who had a nice year in the Cal League as a 22 year old OF.

Think there's a priority to put butts in seats then try to win the division, they just cannot do that unless they trade off some of their big players or they blow through the luxury tax ceiling.jfranco77 said:

Thank you for your concern about the Giants' attendance but they've built up a lot of fan goodwill this decade. They aren't in danger of tarping off their upper deck just yet.
I have to give Evans and Sabean credit for executing on their strategy. Time will tell quickly whether their strategy was sound or not. They've clearly improved their big league roster while staying just under the CBT and not losing their top prospects or compensation picks.
CF is still a gaping hole. Adding Billy Hamilton or Cain would be a break from their current strategy. They supposedly like Steven Duggar a lot but he needs more time in the minors. McCutchen probably would be a defensive upgrade over Span out there but there's a lot of ground to cover.

This is the worst sentence that's ever been posted on this website. Their strategy is garbage. Nobody should get any credit for having a bad plan and then doing that bad plan. "I'm going to just watch Fox and Friends, pound Diet Cokes all day and insult non-white people on social media." Oh wow, that Trump, executing on his strategy once again, very Presidential, harumph harumph.
This dumb strategy is because Giants fans are babies. Not in terms of temperament (OK, primarily not because of temperament), but because they lack anything resembling cognitive function. If you tell a baby it can have a $20 bill or its stupid pacifier, it'll always pick its pacifier. Because it can only value what it knows. The baby is stupid.
If you tell a Giants fan that they can be mediocre, continue to cannibalize an already barren farm system and max out their payroll for an ok team, BUT, that team has Bumgarner and Posey on it, they'll take that. Even years, dood! And as long as the front office trots out what's quickly moving towards nostalgia act territory, their jobs are safe. Once things go #### up for good, they'll probably sail off into the sunset and let someone else handle the dirty work.

All that said, I think this deal would've been a good one for a team on the rise, not one on the decline. Crick, imo, is a plate of monkey feces.

The Giants braintrust put their heads together and decided the current core has one more run left in them. I don't think so either but if you accept their premise, they've made defensible moves towards competing for a playoff slot this season.
I think the organization is more sentimental and loyal than the fanbase is. They want to see Buster and Bum go out with a chance at winning something. I'd start the rebuild sooner than later but their roster provides very little capability for that this year. I'm OK with them trying to squeeze another 90 wins out of this bunch. 2020-21 is going to be ugly regardless of whether Arroyo, Crick and Reynolds are around or not.

David Schoenfield made the point that the Dodgers will (relatively) be at their weakest in 2018. They want to stay under the tax threshold as well as save for a run at the big 2019 FA class. This might be the only year over the next half decade that the Giants have a chance, so he thinks, why not go all in for one year.

Placeholder until Alford is ready and the Jays are short on left handed hitters. At $5 million it's not a big deal if he's a platoon guy as long as he brings dingers.
Adding a 37 year old doesn't make a ton of sense for where the Jays currently stand in the division though. This deal makes more sense if they also add a real everyday OF (Cain?) and a 5th starter (probably a flier type).

It looks like the Jays are signing "trading chips". They may not get back big returns at the deadline but you may get a handful of B level prospects for guys like Solarte, Diaz, and Granderson if they have decent years. Utility guys and left handed power still have value to teams in the playoff hunt at the deadline. I dunno. Its a stretch perhaps.

Adding Grandy as a platoon guy for 5 million is not a bad move. BA had dropped but he still has power. Playing only against righties should help his BA. I remember when he first came up with Detroit. They thought he would be a 15-20 HR a year guy and now he has 319 for his career and made over 100 million. Been a nice run for Grandy.

Reasons Ive seen:It is weird that there has been so little activity, what is the cause? Did I miss something?
1. Several of the big name free agents are Scott Boras clients. He is infamous to let negotiations last to the final hour.
2. Several of the big market teams are trying to get under the luxury tax threshold this year.
3. This is one of the worst free agent classes in recent years.
4. Next year's free agent classes is one of the top classes ever. Teams are saving their money for next year.
5. With the advance of analytics and smarter front offices, many teams realize that spending a lot of money with long term commitments on free agents makes no sense.

Grichuk has two of the three true outcomes covered but his lack of walks is a problem (sub-.300 OBP). Other than that, he's a useful player who can fill any OF position. The Blue Jays acquisitions of Grichuk and Granderson this week is bad news for Teoscar Hernandez, Dwight Smith Jr. and Anthony Alford.
Leone was a very effective reliever last year. Greene throws hard in the general direction of home plate.

The Giants sign Austin Jackson for 2/$6M plus incentives. He had a very nice year in 318 PAs for Cleveland. I doubt he'll be able to repeat that production but some combination of Jackson, Gorkys Hernandez and Steven Duggar in CF will be an improvement over last year's OF. It is not a high bar.

Greene is the prospect who is friends with Charlie Sheen, if anyone remembers those stories from a few years back.
Jays in theory have a passable outfield with Grichuk in right, Pillar in centre and Pearce/Granderson platoon in left. Carerra was re-signed as well. Wouldn't be shocked to see an outfielder (probably Pearce or Pillar) traded.
Fangraphs has the Jays up to 85-77 in their projections now. Basically the top of the 2nd tier of team, with the 9 actually good teams in the league pretty clearly distanced from them. If they signed one of Darvish/Arrieta/Cobb/Lynn they might make for an interesting wild card wild card but I have no confidence in them doing that.
