*** Official 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** (3 Viewers)

Half my friends that still haven't left south Florida are now wishing they did and are nervous about getting stuck on the highway if they leave now. The other half are making jokes about going to the beach and going fishing today.
If they live away from the coast and have storm shutters or impact windows, they should stay. The return on Monday may have even worse traffic.

I work for Publix and man has it been a mad house.I forgot how crazy it gets.I'm off today doing my final preps today.Go in tomorrow at 5 am should be real interesting. You would be suprised how quick a grocery store can empty out.

We all live between 3-6 miles from the Atlantic Ocean (as of today).
Better to batten down and stay IMO. There's a risk and major inconvenience in leaving and returning. The return on Monday morning after the storm could be horrific when most people are likely to return. Local roads will have downed trees.

The whole "on-the-scene" reporting is kinda crazy to me (although, I am watching it...so...I guess it works).   But, dang, there were people on Jacksonville Beach just sitting in beach chairs in the background.  Why would you do that?  :loco:

The risk of driving back home is absolutely nothing compare to the risk of the strong side of a Cat4 hurricane 400 miles wide.

Any Irma evacuees are invited to attend the Georgia Tech/Jacksonville State game in Atlanta free of charge on Saturday.  Probably won't get a ton of takers, but still a nice gesture by Tech.

Well we're staying put in Tampa, and with schools closed and the office a ghost town...I tee off at TPC in an hour.

holy hell....

stay safe, FL FBGs.

Jose- please go north immediately and leave the leeward islands and continental US alone. TIA.

Jose looks like it will do a roller coaster complete 360 loop and come back.

Also, there is a non-zero chance Irma exits the east coast, reforms and comes back to life.  The models have Irma holding enough structure to potentially reform.

This 11AM update is ungood.  I would not bet against it making landfall as a Cat 5.  Looks a slight notch to the west again

If the models come out the way they are headed I think the storm will be a Cat1 by the time it gets to Jacksonville - most people around there have gone through that. Not that there wouldn't be some issues but a Cat1 is probable doable and it won't be there until Sunday afternoon/evening

Just read that there is about 7 trillion watts of energy in this thing, twice the energy released by all the bombs used in WWII combined.

They have Jose doing a full loopdie-loop? Hmmm.
Yes.  This is bad because it it would just follow Irma it would hit Irma's wake and probably fizzle.  Jose is expected to do it's best acrobatic stunt work over this weekend while nobody is paying attention.

DUVAL!   That's why.

Not a look-at-me! post:

When I was a kid, living in metro N.O. ... us kids would go out and play during the weak-sauce tropical storms and hurricanes that came ashore in the late 70s/early 80s (no direct hits). A popular pastime was to get a big sheet of cardboard, put on roller skates or stand on a skateboard, and let the winds push you along the street. There wasn't any flying debris to worry about ... leaves and twigs would be the worst of it.

Growing up ... hurricanes used to mean no school or electricity for a day or two. Born after Betsy (1965), and never saw a truly damaging local hurricane until Katrina.

These things usually hit Jacksonville from the coast, right?  Being on the right side of the eye is worse than being on the left side.

for you florida guys, do you have flood insurance?  is it all considered a flood zone and mandatory?  does home owners ins. cover a hurricane?  is there a separate insurance for hurricane?  if so, do you have that?

I mean, destruction blows, but how many of you are covered fully?

My homeowners covers hurricane damage, it may be a requirement in Florida.

In some random thread someone was talking about catastrophe bonds.  Who had the knowledge on that?  Stock thread maybe?  Curious to see if they can be had at .001 on the dollar today, or are they all just :toilet:

I mentioned them in the FEMA thread.  No knowledge on how they are trading in recent years and won't be back in front of a Bloomberg for a few days (or longer if I can't get home due to this Irma #####)

5000 dollar deductible for hurricanes I have flood insurance but I know a lot of folks don't.

Looks like most people here are staying.  I went to publix to use their ATM to get cash just in case. I had to park in lot next door.

Looks like we could get winds similar to Matthew with less storm surge and rain.

Where is Jose pointed at the moment?

well, if you're gonna go left...keep going!  damn it...now i'm thinking it's time to leave....any others from the Orlando area thinking the same or am I overreacting?

Go where at this point?  Google maps is backed up from Tampa and south of Orlando all the way to Atlanta, also from Jacksonville to past Tallahassee and I-95 from Midway, GA to Santee, SC

Your 20 miles east of me so you probably would be ok as long as you are not in a mobile home. How far from Monroe and the St.Johns are you, flooding could be an issue.Just be prepared to be without power for an extended time.

They aren't close and we are in the highest area of our area (if that makes sense).  It's always been a power issue for me.....if it's weeks, I might shoot someone.

There's the possibility that 95 wouldn't clear out tonight, I suppose, but it's cleared up by midnight each night so far.  dunno

Make sure you're gassed up and have some reserves.  If you decide to leave later, no power = no pumps, even if there's gas.

I feel better today than I did last night. Its weakening and by the time it gets up near I4 it will likely be a Cat 2. Everyone is gonna see hurricane force winds at some point but I dont think that will last very long once shes over the only real land mass shes encountered.

If anyone is evacuating via I-10 thru Alabama.   Mobile was a another kick in the nuts after finally getting out of Florida.  The Wallace Tunnell was closed yesterday, got rerouted thru another tunnel.   Long backup to get through it.
