*** Official 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

i'm seeing the weather guys now go into excuse mode as to why the storm surges in Florida are no where near what was predicted.  I'm not criticizing them but plenty of people will.
Well it's obviously good news if the storm surge was less than predicted. Also, the way this approached the FLA coast was kind of a best case scenario in regards to surge. The worst part of a hurricane in regards to storm surge is the northeast quadrant. In this case, it happened to be in a very low populated area south of Marco Island. While the backside of the storm can also cause storm surge, it is typically not as bad. If this had hit Miami, we would be talking about an entirely different story.

Winds have forced the closure of the Intercoastal bridges in Duval/St. Johns but the bridges over the St. Johns River remain open.

So https://twitter.com/ReedTimmerAccu this guy gonna show up again?

Starting to wonder.

Those storm chasers were great this afternoon.  Actually got good footage in daytime of great stuff.  This dude drove around in a random truck, got 3 minutes of footage and  went to bed.

He was in Key West. Reports I have seen on twitter suggest that there is no electricity or cell service there, so it could be awhile until communication can be established. But yeah, going to a small island to experience at Cat 4 hurricane may not be the greatest of ideas.

gonna need a translator
Just throw that out.  Irma took an unexpected right turn from 2-6pm.  It looked to have enough movement in it that maybe we'd be looking at this thing going rouge.  Never was gonna happen.

Looks like Eye will split the gap between Tampa and Orlando and exit to the GOM tomorrow briefly before coming back onshore.

Ya, honestly this may have been the dream track for this storm.  This S curve type thing put the NE of the storm in all the right spots.  (As much as you could hope for)
It is pretty amazing. Avoided disaster scenario #1, which was Miami, and then avoided scenario #2. Saving grace was the more southerly track that took it right along Cuba with a later turn that avoids Miami. Of course, that doesn't take away from the many places that have been devastated by this storm. Unfortunately with these things, they have to hit somewhere.

Some decent gusts lately.  Power has been flickering. Worst isn't supposed to hit for a few more hours.

Brown liquor activated.

Shoutout to Naples and the Everglades taking one for the squad today.
My favorite Aunt and Uncle have a condo right on the water in Fort Myers.  They left for Atlanta but the early reports are that the complex is still standing and the surge didn't reach their 2nd floor unit.  Some damage in and around, but nothing catastrophic (yes I'm only speaking with very localized data and realize that this could just be dumb luck).  So yeah, feel bad for Naples but they slowed this ##### down.

Lakeland about to get some 80-100mph winds for a while...its hitting Bartow now, about 15-20 minutes from me...
Power is starting to flicker here, which is funny, because some of my friends back home lost power for a while, but it's been going strong here.

On a side note, what is Jose going to do? It's literally sitting on its thumb and rotating.

Feel awful for them. Nothing I can do except guarantee we'll be taking a long vacation down there next year and spread some money around.

3.3 million customers (of 7 million total households) without power in Florida right now.
80% in Miami Dade  without power. Many will regain power quickly, but it will take weeks for complete restoration. I have power and great a.c., but besides my daughter and her dog Captain, how many people can i fit into 400 sf with 1 bathroom?

Power seems to still be on at my house. I asked my sociopath dad how it's going just now and he said "we're sleeping". Okey dokey, sorry to bother.

Hang in there gb.

Also if you ever wanted to run down the street naked, now is the time.  Neighbors just chalk it up to the hurricane (not that I know this first hand  )

That probably wouldn't fly 600 miles away lol. My idiot dad is at my house.

Tampa news just said Polk county was just pummeled with some of the strongest winds of the storm with a 130mph gust

I lost power at 12:20...a hurricane is bad enough, but it gets real freaky when its pitch dark. Every little noise is amplified and it's pretty nerve wracking.

Just went outside to assess the neighborhood. Zero rain but still gusts of 50+...very cool and eerie.
