*** Official 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

Just stopped in to give you a a few numbers.

10.5 million meals delivered, 3.6 million gallons of potable water, 10 million bottles of water, 640k registered for disaster relief (includes Virgin Islands) and $87 million approved to distribute to some of those people already. $336 million in public assistance granted to Hurricane Maria communities.
Is this a daily figure?  There are 3m people there no?

Is that what your team has done? There wasn't any scope/scale.  I mean in the states they make it sound like everyone is starving.
That's overall so far.

They are saying there is going to be at least four times the housing construction than there will be for Harvey, and Harvey was a home wrecker.

People need potable water and the destruction is very widespread. It's one of the worst US disasters in my lifetime IMO.

I know you want to know so...

Lares, handsdown, has the hottest chicks. They have a reputation on the island for their coffee and their gals, both are on point.

Tomorrow is my first day off since Sept 20, coincidently the day Maria hit here. So I have wifi and time, both a rarity.

So basically rough math a meal per week and maybe a half cup of water per day?

Where else are they getting supplies?  I mean I assume there was some food already there. How long till it runs out?

You get the sense the country could just go rouge?

That math assumes everyone needs food and water which is not the case. San Juan has comms, most of the island's electricity, and a lot of the supplies. The west coast is ok, up the middle is where the need is. That's where I work mostly.

The not having comms up by now is the biggest failure. I don't get it. Also 80% of the island is without power and many of the traffic tolls are working and they are charging. Those two things in particular blow my mind. I'd personally riot over the tolls.

My connection is ####ed so I'm done for the night. I didn't even know I won Cake until three days after baseball season finished. No streaming pr0n either.

When you check in again. How is Aguadilla Area with electricity and comms?

a gb grad-school classmate lives there- still no power. but sounds like she should have a ton of work (architect) for the coming years.

Well.  Grandfather inLaw just yesterday finally got electricity and running water.

No land line yet - his cell broke but had spotty reception

Not sure if this right place for this but....

@NHC_Atlantic: 745 AM:  A new Special Outlook has been issued.  There is a 40% chance of subtropical or tropical cyclone forming late this week in the central or eastern Gulf of Mexico.  See the full text at: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=atlc&fdays=5 https://twitter.com/NHC_Atlantic/status/998894687783145474/photo/1

In a lot of ways, ignorance was bliss. Down in New Orleans, we didn't used to get doom-laden warnings about "sub-tropical cyclones" until they were on our doorstep. Now, every time a seagull poops in the Atlantic Ocean, the alarm is raised, Axl Rose and Bill Paxton are wheeled out, and so on.

@Henry Ford, @SaintsInDome2006, and @tipsy mcstagger ... remember these guys? Fast-forward to 0:49 if you're in a hurry ... though the late and venerable Bill Elder did bat leadoff on that telecast.

Oh yes. There was a lot more practical knowledge and experiences relied on back then. Nobody worried until they worried and the most likely you’d prepare for a hurricane party. Now technology and social media really ramps up angst.

No bueno.  Rain is getting old here.  Maybe I should push up getting new sod.
Today is the 11th straight day of measurable rainfall (and no sun) and there's rain in the forecast every day for the next 10.  Would set an all-time record for consecutive days of measurable rainfall if it comes to pass.  Getting tiresome.

Yea I had to paddle to Publix today.

It's going to be past Memorial Day before I even go in my pool for the first time.  Can't remember that being the case in the 16 years I've lived in FL.  I'm usually swimming in March, this year I'm just emptying 3-4 inches of water out every few days.  This has been a weird year so far weather-wise.

Commuting 60 miles each way in this mess for the last 7 working days has sucked too.  I had a tee time last weekend - canceled.  I was supposed to be going to the OCSC/Chicago game this coming Saturday - dumped the tickets.

Man I just cannot fathom doing that commute every day it is the definition of sucktitude. I am still going to go completely hooked now.Never would have believed that even 5 years ago.

June 1st Mother Nature!  June 1st!

We too are stuck in the summer rut already.  85%+ humidity, 40-60% chance of rain, mid 80 degrees, every day.  We've had 7 straight days of rain, with nearly 5 inches this past Saturday.

I'll go ahead and start the 2018 thread.

Compared to driving central NJ through the Holland Tunnel to the WTC every day, it's a picnic.  You cut your teeth on that commute, just about everything else is tame by comparison.

Especially anywhere near Orlando. Worst city in Florida for traffic IMO. I'm glad I only have to work there a few nights a month between 11pm and 4am. On the rare occasion I have to drive there during the day I about lose my damn mind.

This rain is beyond ridiculous...Here in Lakeland we've got over 10 inches of rain so far, and the next closest is Sarasota with less than 6 inches. I can't wait to move out of this hole.

Only I4 is really bad, most of the other highways are harmless.  I work in SE Orlando and my house is SE, so it isn't all that bad.  More traffic than there used to be around the airport, but if you know how to avoid it, it's not that difficult.  It's WAY better than Miami/Lauderdale.  It takes a half hour to go 5 miles down there.  Maybe it's because I know my way around Orlando and am usually following navigation down in SE Florida, but that area seems way more congested to me.  Here, it's more around the theme parks.

I moved to Lake county from Orlando 20 years ago it is a world of difference.I was born and raised in Orlando town has really changed over the years not for the good.

NSB here.  But I moved here from Houston and still work in Houston.  I can get to MCO in the same time as it took get to my office in Houston most mornings and I lived less than 20 miles away.

And this rain sucks.  Haven't had to boat off the lift but once this spring.

I try to avoid Orlando as much as I can.  I-4 is turrible all the time.
I-4 sucks.  Always.  Luckily, I can take 95 to 528 and avoid it altogether.  I can count on one hand the number of times I've been on it in the last 3 years.  If you're stuck having to use it at all between about Altamonte Springs and Lake Buena Vista, you're screwed.  All the traffic going across the state and all the theme park traffic on top of the everyday commuters makes it a nightmare.  Especially now that they're doing all this work on it that's going to last years.  Supposedly, that's going to make it better, but I'm guessing it will really suck until the construction is done and then go back to just sucking normally again.

Speaking of all the rain we have had I looked out of the window this morning and saw this.

I woke up this morning to this really bright light coming from outside my window.  I rolled over and asked my wife WTF was going on.  Turns out, it was the sun!  Seriously, I had no idea we had so many FBG in the Orlando metro area....good to know

Tax free holiday is next week....load up on your flashlights, batteries etc.

Looks like today is going to be the one break in the rain, tomorrow it starts back up for the next 10 days at least....

I did the exact same thing.

seriously.....can't i just enjoy this cosmic phenomena without all the Debbie Downer stuff???  ;)
No, because Friday starts a short vacation for me.  I had visions of going to the OCSC game on Saturday, having people over Memorial Day to go in the pool, firing up the smoker, etc.  Now, I'm going to end up sitting in my f#$%ing house for 5 days watching movies and playing video games by myself.  DAMN IT !!

touche....I guess I'll be doing the same, but I AM firing up the smoker come hell or high water....probably both!!!!  :gang2:

@NHC_Atlantic: NHC will initiate advisories at 11 AM EDT / 10 AM CDT on Subtropical Storm Alberto located over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.

Our son is flying from DC to New Orleans tomorrow afternoon, through Tampa. Any educated guesses on whether his flights will be cancelled/delayed due to the storm?
