Barker Reservoir may overflow and flood Cinco Ranch, which could be hundreds of homes

http://fbcoem.org/fort-bend-county-issues-barker-reservoir-advisory-condado-de-fort-bend-anuncia-una-alerta-para-el-barker-reservoir/\

The eastern edge of that projected flood zone is about 4 1/2 miles from me.

They mentioned Addicks reservoir too on Fox26, but I don't see an alert for it. May want to keep your eyes open for one.
So when they say flood, are we talking ankle deep or balls deep?

The HRRR mesoscale forecast model deserves major kudos for capturing the incredible extent of rainfall in its 18-hour forecasts issued hourly on Saturday (see one such outlook spotlighted in our Saturday post). HRRR made it clear that the Houston area could receive 10” – 20” of rain on Saturday night, which indeed it did. The latest runs of the HRRR model suggest that rainbands may become more sporadic across the Houston area on Sunday afternoon before again intensifying on Sunday night, as nighttime atmospheric processes across the Gulf of Mexico help strengthen the rainbands pushing onshore. The extreme rainfall is predicted to extend into the Beaumont-Port Arthur and Lake Charles areas. If a gradual eastward shift occurs in the favored rainband location, as suggested by the HRRR, it is possible that the very heaviest rains tonight and early Monday will be focused toward the northeastern half of the Houston region.

If true, this might mean the worst might be over for the most vulnerable part of Houston.

Why doesn't it apply here? :whoosh:
It is focused legislation on hail/wind damage arbitration.  Flood damage is usually pretty obvious.

Hail/Wind damage is tricky to write for because it may not be immediately apparent, even after the 1 year period and also can be cumulative.

And I imagine you don't get as much hail from a tropical storm along the coast in a warm area.

Factors favoring hail

Hail is most common within continental interiors of the mid-latitudes, as hail formation is considerably more likely when the freezing level is below the altitude of 11,000 feet (3,400 m).  Movement of dry air into strong thunderstorms over continents can increase the frequency of hail by promoting evaporational cooling which lowers the freezing level of thunderstorm clouds giving hail a larger volume to grow in. Accordingly, hail is less common in the tropics despite a much higher frequency of thunderstorms than in the mid-latitudes because the atmosphere over the tropics tends to be warmer over a much greater altitude. Hail in the tropics occurs mainly at higher elevations.

I'm less than a mile away from the path entrance to George Bush Park on the west side. We have many friends who live on the east side of Fry Rd near the park and they received an email from their HOA about the potential of the Barker Reservoir. We should be safe on the west side of Fry road. We have gotten about 18" of rain but everything is draining nicely into the bayous which still aren't full near us (they drain into the reservoir)

it might be 6-8 weeks before I can ride my bike through the park.

Stay safe everyone

As much as I hate to say it, right now isn't even close to as bad as it's going to get.  Since its above sea level, it won't rival the death tolls in New Orleans, but I bet the total damage far exceeds what happened in the Big Easy.  Monumental, epic flooding is still to come.

That's more to do with hail.  I don't think it would apply here.

I think there will be a point soon with global warming where hail insurance will just get to be too much.
Honestly, this doesn't have anything to do with weather.  It has everything to do with abuse of the system by attorneys, roofers, etc for profit.

I'm sure.  I had a 52k claim this year for hail/wind and was blown away (so to speak) at the manner in which these things are handled.

i'm not in Texas (FL, which probably sets the standard for abuse of the system, respectful nod to NY, CA, MI) but its the same in many jurisdictions.  The legislature waits far too long to step in and curb abuse, because.....most of them are attorneys themselves and don't like introducing or passing legislation that kills the golden goose by restricting unnecessary wasteful litigation.

Forecast is turning worse. Major part of the storm has apread backwards. Internal resovoirs are being drained in anticipation of eastern water.

Going to be a long night for some people.

Spent the last 20 minutes looking at maps. The Addicks and Barker reservoirs drain into Buffalo Bayou. Bad news for those downstream in towards town I would think. Probably not a big impact on me either way. I'm more worried about if they were releasing into Brays Bayou as I'm guessing that is where my subdivision ultimately drains into.

I'm a little shuked why they are doing this release at night though. I'd think you'd want to do it during the day so if the water levels go up, people are awake for it. Or maybe they are timing it so the impact won't be felt until morning?

I would imagine there's a concern that not releasing the water sooner would result in dams bursting.

Ugh.

In the evening was feeling like I had a fever around 8. Raining heavy. 98.3 temperature, ok, maybe was just how tired I am. Laid down to sleep. Rain quickly stopped. Was not able to sleep at all, kept moving alarm forward since I could hear it wasn't raining and it had to have drained completely during those 4 1/2 hours of no rain so no worry. Right?

Got up at 12:30 to take some anti-biotics and anti-inflammatory for my leg. Temperature: 100.3. Oof. Ok, maybe because I was just in a toasty bed? Will check later.

Went and looked at street. Completely flooded. 2nd highest the water has been up my driveway. Water wasn't draining at all from what I could see. FML.

So I make some redneck swampers with two hefty bags and duck tape (complete with hockey-style duck tape garters at the top). Waded in with a hockey stick and proceeded to go Wayne Gretzky on the storm drain as best I could. Nothing I could reach or feel as far as obstructions.  ####.

So having completed my Larry's other-brother-Darryl impersonation, waddled back to the house and cut the waders off. Checked temperature again. 100.0.  Ugh.

I can only hope the backed up water clears out before it starts really raining again. :(

Update:  Water has receded slowly over the last hour. Mostly pavement showing in front of my house, though rest of road to left towards the storm drain is a lake still.

Stay safe. Now I feel bad about my joke in the weight loss thread...

Just saw this map of the areas affected by the reservoir releases. http://i.imgur.com/lwbqJXl.jpg

They have it extending almost to Westheimer. There's a mini mall on the south side of Westheimer and then my subdivision is right behind it. If it makes it to us it'll probably pour into our subdivision since the road in the middle is lower than the surrounding areas.

I have many friends who have evacuated on the west side off the reservoir. I just rode my bike to the park, and the water is literally a 1/2 mile from my house as the crow flies right at the entrance of the bike path into the park  (there are houses on both sides of the path). They are saying those at elevation 104-104.5 ft (sea level) and below are in trouble in our area. We are at 105 ft.

Water got within 8 feet of my door last night with the deluge of rain we got yesterday. It all drained nicely once the rain stopped around 10pm last night.  I feel fortunate so far compared to others. I did have my bedroom ceiling collapse a bit (got a roof leak around the chimney that I can't get to from inside the house). That is minor compared to what others are going through.

The good news for us on the west side of Houston is the storm appears to be moving more east.

Dang, GB. Glad to hear the water has receded for now and hope you feel better soon.

My two-year-old has been running a fever for two days now. We called the nurse and she said our only option is the ER and who knows what he might catch there. We're just managing it with Motrin and Tylenol... he's feeling better this morning but it's scary with everything socked in.

Will keep hoping for the best for you. At this point it's pretty much just the whim of how long and hard the rain falls on what my situation ends up being. The influx of dry air has helped tremendously, subdivision has drained out fully now. Trying to get some sleep while we have a clear window.

Glad he's feeling better Ignoramus. Hope we all make it through this with nothing worse than some fevers and scares.

Geez. Will be praying for you and the little guy.

Our street is still holding up thankfully.  My mom had to evacuate to our house from her place due to the San Bernard and Brazos river overflows. Now they're evacuating Sienna Plantation which will be a total cluster. We're taking in a family from there if they can figure out how to get to our place. Gonna be a full house.

Good onya taking people in.

go to sleep, wake up, grab my lunch thinking and worrying about all you guys... wishing you all safe and dry hours and days ahead.

Igno, Jr. is good. It's more stressful on the missus than anything. Little guy just wants to watch "Trolls" on a continual loop.

I live in the west side of Pearland by 288. Lots of flooding in the area, but our neighborhood is managing to hold up so far. Friendswood to our east is devastated.
Saw Pearland is getting hit hard today, almost 7 inches already today. Hope everything is ok for you.

Our neighborhood is still faring okay. Fingers crossed it holds for the next 24 hours. The family we were going to host ended up evacuating west to another location.  Will still likely have my mom and her boyfriend with us for an extended period depending on the state of their home when they can get back to it.

Word getting out that Addicks has started to sustain uncontrolled overflow and are at 105.72 feet.

This right here is the worst case scenario.

This thing pops and you get to add another zero to the recovery cost.

Saying game over at 106 now.  Storm moving a bit faster to the ENE and getting hit hard by dry air.

Coinflip now.

Brazos set to crest tomorrow AM.  If Addicks survives the night and Brazos doesn't get much over 72 (which models says it won't) should be reasonably ok to what we went to bed with.

Uncontrolled release is on the north side.  This is perhaps good, sounds like that side was reinforced somewhat.  At 106 #### hits fan
