***Official*** 2018 World Cup thread (and Drinking Guide) (1 Viewer)

At least I know what to do with my mornings again!!

Yesterday was awful. I just walked around my living room in circles flipping back and forth between 219 and 2.

Huge day for PSG

And whoever said the ref had a bad game, yeah, really bad. I'm shocked it didn't cause more of an issue with these two teams. Thought for sure it would get it off control.

Maybe props to the players for just getting on with it?

I don't think he decided the outcome or anything, Portugal didn't deserve to win, but there was a LOT he let go.

Was a shock that it didn't escalate and no one got hurt.  But given that it didn't... by the end everyone on the field seemed to get that you better just get up and keep playing, and it made for a fun game.

Holden/Strong go nuts about a "missed" foul, screaming for the yellow..... replay shows no contact and a terrible dive by the player...... Holden/Strong comment that the ref has lost control of the game and he's in over his head.

what was their issue with the ref?

did he not call enough fouls and pass out enough cards for their taste? it started to feel like some sort of personal agenda against the guy.

I had the volume down so didn’t hear a lot of their commentary but the ref was letting too much go - he needed to get control by giving out a card or two for some of the challenges that warranted it.

It's not wholly on the ref. These two teams can be very cynical. This game could very easily been a mess of players laying on the ground, worse tackles.

The players deserve some "duh, please play like this all the time" praise I guess, but it was just a bit unexpected with these two.

Even that aside, this ref let some hard tackles go that usually lead to harder retaliation tackles.  It worked out this time.

Paolo Dybala had more goals for Juventus in 2017-18 (26) than minutes in this World Cup (22).

I thought the ref was really really bad. I believe I remember what play you are talking about, and I thought it was an obvious foul despite the fact that there was no contact. Defender stepped in front of someone running at full speed and the offensive player had to contort around him to avoid the hip check and went down - that is a foul.

Insanity....and no Icardi to boot.
They had too much talent in the attacking midfield / second striker to bring all of them.  They didn't have anywhere near enough talent on defense to win.  Just compare the defensive shape of Argentina to Uruguay. It was night and day.

Some boiling hot takes from yesterday.

Argentina couldn't hit a single cross past the first man (or keep it in play)... And they were having success getting wide.

France D was odd to me- shapeless and passive until pretty deep into the defensive third.

Both teams seemed to be relying on the class of the players to win the game more than any organisation or tactics.

If they can get more than one player (mbappe this time) stepping up at the same time, nobody stops this French team. I haven't seen yet.

Pogba was pulling some dirty #### out there...was wondering when the argies would try to get some back.

And not one mention of Kante shutting down Messi? That seemed to be their only tactical plan... you, just follow that guy and don't let him beat us. Also, let's hope they don't put their best players on the field.

Yeah, ref was pretty bad. Only saving grace was he was consistent with what he missed for both teams. He's familiar looking and somebody said he was concacaf- MLS guy?

Suriname looked genuinely organized- and I liked how they alternated sitting deep and pressing high (mostly the former). Also liked how direct they played- get the ball long to Suarez, who was winning everything except the ones where the opponent banged into his head (small of the back...pool or a pond). And then they'd get at least two guys there quickly in support. That cross field pass cavani made to Suarez for the first goal  as good as the run and cross back.

No idea what they did to stifle CRo, but it worked. Still thought he was going to get that late chance where he was moving to his right on top of the box on target...you just expect it from him.

#### pepe.

Sad to think this is likely the last WC with CRo and Messi. Sad to read the dopey hot take "overrated" comments too... These guys are top 10 goat, playing at the same time. We've been lucky to get to see them.

At least he stayed consistent, perhaps a bit lucky it worked in the end as you note. It’s worse imo if he just decides to flip a switch at some point and start showing cards for stuff that was just a foul through the first 60 minutes.

I don't know where the Concacaf thing came from but I saw that mentioned too.  I think they confused the guy in the VAR booth with the ref.

The ref was Alireza Faghani from Iran.  He cut his teeth in the Iranian league and still refs there and has been reffing international, mostly Asia, since 2008.

Three MLS games yesterday drew more fans than the two WC games.  I hope they don't screw up the ticket prices in 2026 too badly.  If they even just keep it at a very high price it should do very well but there has to be a breaking point some where....
