Martinez took Fro out of it. Left wing? WTF was that?
I thought Belgium's entire set-up was weird.  I did not really pay attention until the commentator said Jan was playing LB, and when I looked - Belgium had no LB.  They played a straight 343, and did not even use wingbacks at all - a flat 4 MF.   :loco:

Ok. Now solve kneeling to end a game (the definition of time wasting) and icing the kicker in football. Also take a crack at the basketball fouls.
Change the rule so that a player isn't down until tackled(no giving yourself up rule).  I doubt many coaches would willingly let 300 lb linemen line up to obliterate their QB.  Of course, the NFL is trying to do away with big hits, so it'd never happen.  Icing the kicker would just require officials to not give TOs once teams are lined up for FGs.  Pretty simple.  NBA - no blood no foul IMO.

Excellent match - saw more foot talent there than all the other packed-in pathetic knockout teams combined. De Bruyne's my favorite player but i wont mind rooting in a team that has players named Tweety & mmmTitty & Boppy. Offering 3/2 odds

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Looking forward to Belgium and England fielding the same second-team lineups in the meaningless third-place game rematch of their meaningless Group Round finale.

I like that France always has at least one prominent player who strongly resembles a famous animated Frenchman.  For years there was Ribery looking like one of the guys who turned Bart Simpson into slave labor at their winery.  Now there's Pavard looking like the guy who cooks with the help of a rat controlling his motions by pulling his hair.  Top notch stereotype confirmation.

shame he's stuck in Vancouver...
I think it is great considering his age.  I don't think he holds a Euro pass port which is why he has to wait.  There are very few countries he could be a pro in right now in Europe due to the rules of being 18 in most places.

He is getting a ton of really good experience before he is 18, which is pretty rare.  Once he turns 18, then he can make his transfer hopefully soon after.

Waited too long to bring on Carrasco, IMO

Really? Thought the game was a tremendous disappointment. Sucks these talented teams get to this place and then pucker up for 60 minutes.

The occasional 7-1 scoreline notwithstanding, WC semi-finals tend toward tight, cagey affairs

Rightly or wrongly, Martinez is going to get criticized for the rest of his days for changing up what worked so well vs. Brazil.

Not having Meunier limited his options.

It's nice that they don't do yellow card suspensions for the final, but that one may have had a pretty big impact on the semifinal between arguably the two best teams.

:lmao:  Mbappe

Dribbles the ball out of bounds.  I'll get that for you!  Whoops I accidentally threw it 10 yards into the field of play.  No worries, I got it!  Whoops I accidentally ran too far and kicked the ball another 10 yards.  My bad I will fetch it!  Oops I overran it again and tripped over it and it went another 10 yards!

Then 2 minutes later he gets decapitated by Vertongen's pinky finger.

If I played soccer there is a 100% chance I would end up kicking that guy in the face.

Kind of lame for the ref to blow it dead after the 6' of stoppage time.  They maybe actually played what, 3 minutes of that?

Yeah, this was disgraceful.  And when the ref doesn't adjust the time for those antics and the only downside was a yellow card that has no bearing whatsoever, then there's no reason to not do that at the end of the game.  At least 1 minute should have been added if not more.

Now we're at the point in the match where the winning team milks every thing possible to try to take time off the clock. THIS is the stuff that is bad for the game of soccer.
I read this right when I saw France taking the ball to the corner ... not players flopping.
My reply was regarding tactics such as that, and the players slowing down kicks, throws and subs.

No it isn't.

NFL players used to milk injuries too at the end of games either to milk clock or try to get a clock stoppage. So the NFL stepped in and changed the rules.

FIFA would do well to do something to stop that ridiculousness as well.

The better team won, but the sport really would be better without the diving and milking injuries.

Terrible analogy. There is a play clock and they’re playing well within the spirit of the rules in doing so.

Mbappe displayed disgusting sportsmanship.

While i agree that the 3rd place match is mostly meaningless, i think England is the one country that would be determined to come home with something given their past WC failures.

Yeah, because the Belgians win everything...

Both sides will feel aggrieved at even playing in a 3rd place game, and neither will give a #### - just going through the motions hoping to make it through without injury.

Goals in the 3rd place game count toward golden boot. Could be a factor for some players.

69 of the 158 goals scored this WC have been on set pieces.  43.7%

Has any one seen a stat on how this compares to a league season?  At first glance the WC numbers seem higher by maybe 15-20%.
