Official 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread - Sebestian (2 Viewers)

Report from Publix - plenty of water and milk. Pretty dead when I got there but 9am rush started filing in.

A little gusty here in Miami but we seemed to have escaped the major wrath of Dorian other than some Tropical Storm force winds and  rain. It's rainy season here anyway so we are used to torrential downpours occurring with little notice. Most people have secured their outdoor furniture and other minor prep hurricane prep. Have seen some storm shutters up but not many. Gas stations are back to normal after the pre-weekend scarcity. No issues at grocery.

Miami seems to have let out a collective sigh.....this time.

Freeport expected to sustain winds and gusts of 165 for 24 straight hours.
Andrew was a cat 5 at landfall south of Miami, but it was small, moved fast and the strong winds lasted for only 3 to 4 hours. So this is like 6 Andrews for Freeport.

Freeport had almost fully recovered from cat 4 hurricane Matthew which hit in Oct 2016. The casino had not yet reopened. The video and news coming in from Grand Bahama show devastation. The airport is under 4 feet of water.

The trees in Freeport had lost all their leaves in Matthew, the foliage had just started to return.

The pictures and vids coming out of the Bahamas are heart-breaking.  Especially when you know they don't have the resources to deal with it.  We take so much for granted in the US.  (Unless you're an American living in Puerto Rico!)

GL to all the east coasties.  Hopefully everyone dodges the worst of this thing.

Stupid question.  When the storm is moving as fast as I can walk, and since the eye is so calm, why not just get to the eye and then stroll along with it?  It’ll be sunny and beautiful everywhere you go, totally safe?

The third little pig worked hard all day and built his house with bricks.
This.

Though I should say; the storms around here are usually not that terrible. I ain’t wishing for something like what’s happening in the Bahamas right now. That #### is nuts.

There were a couple of hurricane streamers that got into the eye of Michael last year and did just this while they could find roads to drive on that weren't covered in trees.  They didn't make it far.

Basically, yeah. it was like a normal summer day in the middle of the storm.

Eventually you get to the end of the island and when you're treading water the Eastern eyewall hits you like a Little Debbie hunger pang.

Wouldn't it be difficult to get under the eye of the storm in the first place?

Why not build a giant fan that blows at 4000 MPH to push the hurricane north?
Why not have a few military planes flow over the eye, connect/drop some high power fans to blow the eye into a different direction??? Have a whole fleet of planes re-directing the eye?

So you get to the edge of the island, then what?

I dunno I'm too lazy to find the videos but at least three people managed to pull it off in Michael for a bit.  I mean it's a neat party trick.  If I recall right a pair of these guys got in trouble because when they ran out of room they broke into someone's house for shelter.

Furthering weakening but still a strong storm per 2pm advisory:

Movement: WNW at 1 mph, Wind: 150 mph, Pressure: 938 mb

The Bahamas radar shows that the north side of Freeport is getting the west side of the storm and its N winds close to the eye, which is driving water into the bay. The storm surge there must be extreme. Local10 just showed some home video of someone who decided to ride out the storm in a 2-story house in Freeport who has refuge on the second floor as the ocean comes into his first floor. I hope he has a good roof. Nassau, 130 miles to the south, is also experiencing damaging storm surge.

If you are built on stilts I get it that you can deal with some storm surge, but what are you anchored to?  At some point won't you just float off?

Dorian is stationary. The storm surge on the north side of Freeport, with a U-Shaped  bay, will last for a long time.

I want storm windows like his.
Per the Local 10 reporter in Marsh Harbour, Jenise Fernandez,  the impact windows and sliding glass doors held up well in the resort where they bunkered during Dorian. But many roofs were damaged or completely destroyed, some balconies were left hanging and of course the storm surge did tremendous damage. Some video is currently on their website: https://www.local10.com/

Good News: govt installation where I'm a contractor is closed next 2 days. Not allowed to take govt laptop out of building.

Good News: contracting company literally has doors locked in advance of storm

Bad News: contracting company tells me either PTO or online training. They need to be able to charge me to something. Hellllooo,  pluralsight.

Local10 talking to Brandon Sameuls,  who provided video from his house to the tv station during the storm. Based on second hand reports, he's expecting many casualities due to wind and water. He left the island, but his neighbors who stayed report that most structures are destroyed or uninhabitable. Some CBS homes built to "Ft Lauderdale" standards are reduced to ruble. The poorer and low lying "Mud" area where many Haitians lived was completely inundated. Let's hope most people evacuated to high ground in good structures.

At least 5 dead in Bahamas from Hurricane Dorian

>>  McLEAN'S TOWN CAY, Bahamas - Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said at least five people have died in the Abaco Islands as Hurricane Dorian continues to pound the region as a Category 4 storm.

Minnis said Monday that there are also people in nearby Great Bahama island who are in serious distress.

He said rescue crews will respond to calls for help as soon as weather conditions allow. He said many homes and buildings have been severely damaged or destroyed.

"We are in the midst of a historic tragedy," he said. <<

The storm is stationary and Freeport will be in hurricane force winds for many more hours.

Eyewall replacement.
