*Official 2020 Philadelphia Eagles Thread* Humanity will never recover from the most horrible event to happen in the last 100 years: Doug Pederson pla (3 Viewers)

Wentz still doesn't know when to give up on a play.   He takes so many hits every game that he really doesn't have to
Yep. 3 of those sacks were avoidable

Flip side is that outside of the last 2 series’ he’s looked really good. The speed is real with our WR’s now.

Yeah im liking most of what I'm seeing but I just hate seeing these risks hes taking.   No way he makes it through the season taking hits like that

New season same old ####.
I was hopeful tbh. Thought maybe finally being healthy Carson would be good.  I was wrong. Everybody and their mother knew what the gameplan should be against Washington DL. This teams f'd. Too many years of bad drafting, inconsistent play from Wentz, constant injuries. Doug hasn't been able to put a good offensive game plan together since Reich left. We all saw it last year - and they did nothing about it.

Talk about a heartless group. Coaches have been lazy since the SB win, team shuts it down today at halftime. Carson making the same stupid mistakes not throwing it away, Ertz with gator arms on 4th. Brutal start to the year and you give a division foe confidence they shouldn’t have. Weak.

Hmm, is Doug a fluke coach? Is Carson simply a mediocre QB who just happens to be big and athletic?

Cuz we’ve been doing the exact same thing for 3 seasons now and literally nothing has changed.

Are we the new Chargers?

That game sucked. I'm almost grateful I was forced to watch on a string of janky streams that kept cutting out. 2020 is a waste of a year, all the way around.

We haven't had a good offense since Reich left.  We fired our OC - but did we bring in a new one? Just the same ol.  I think Doug is a good coach - IF he has a strong OC. He doesn't seem to be able to scheme up strong offenses on his own.

Everyone and their mother knew Washington's DL was going to be a strength this game. I assumed we were gonna be attacking that with a quick release gameplan.  Nope - Carson running backwards for 10 yard sacks over and over.

We were incredible lucky in how we won the SB. This doesn't take away the great coaching and players stepping up but winning the SB that year I think hid more of the holes we had and got the team overall and fans complacent and putting higher expectations then there should be on the team. Our DBs were still horrible and our WRs were still bad. We won with a back up QB who can't even win a job in CHI right now and got hot at the right time.

They let Reich go but haven't been able to have a strong OC to help Doug since then. Pederson isn't a terrible coach and players do like him but he needs a stronger OC with him.

Our defense played ok but we played a QB who barely threw for 200 yds and isn't much of an NFL starter today. Or DC's scheme does nothing to generate timely turnovers or big plays. Does create pressure outside of the top 4 line guys and isn't aggressive. We all should've been hoping Schwartz got hired in Clevland to bring in a more aggressive DC. I'm partially biased but for example purposes I want a guy like Florida's DC Todd Grantham as the DC. That D created a ton of big plays and Grantham's defense in close games won some big close games for Florida bringing big time pressure and creating timely big play TO's at the end of games similar to Jim Johnson's Eagles Defenses of yrs ago. I remember one game 4th and 12 (Can't remember who they played) but they needed a TD to tie and Graham sent the house. The Safety got the sack to end the game. Us we got a DC who has the DBs play the first down and hopes the front 4 get the pressure leaving a QB a ton of time. We've lost 2-3 games we should've won because of our DC's lack of aggressive play calling

Defense gave up only 260 yards of offense. Washington scored 27 because Doug called a bad game and Carson made a few mistakes.

Plenty of reason for optimism though...this O-line WILL play better. Raegor is clearly a massive upgrade over Agholar

Speaking of Nelly he had a TD today on one catch for LVR

In other news Malcom Jenkins got called for a question DPI on OJ Howard that would've made it 4th down for TB and set up their first scoring TD.

Really hope Nelson turns it around and has a decent career....seemed like a good kid. Just couldn't track the deep ball to save his life

I do too. Got to meet him awhile back and seems like a good kid overall. Spoke very well too. I think he really needs a change of scenery honestly.

How long until Wentz starts taking heavy fire. Jalen Hurts waiting in the wings. Not trolling. I think Wentz is closer to being moved/benched than people think. I know I'm going to be laughed out of this thread. Lol

I doubt it. I think this year if it doesn't improve the Offensive line gets blamed. If the Eagles are out of playoff contention maybe send Hurts in there for some game experience but again would you put a rookie behind this Oline?

Fair enough. Thanks for the response

The issue is if the line is this bad do you even want a rookie back there and turn him into David Carr?
Good point but I would just add they might not be that bad. Skins DL is loaded with 1st round picks and has one of the best pass rushers from last years draft and the best pass rusher from this year's draft. Plus Kerrigan. I mean they are stacked.

As long as Lane Johnson is out, they will be that bad.
If they remain that bad for a while, the decision to sit Wentz will be made for them, as he will get hurt.

this to me is the best summary of what we saw today. there wasn't a single player on this roster you can turn to and say he's the heart and soul of this team who will rise to the challenge today. injuries hurt, but man Wentz made bad decisions one after another. Even if Miles is back fully healthy next week, he'll be busy blocking more than running at this rate.

Some early thoughts.

  1. The game plan really shocked me.  I wasn't expecting a lot of running with Sanders out, but I was expecting a lot of misdirection, pocket movement, play action and screens, especially those TE screens Goedert is so good at.  Almost none of that actually happened, they played right into Football Team's strength.
  2. Lack of adjustment during the 2nd half shocked me equally.  Doug has always been pretty good at this, but today was like a Stubborn Andy day, where he doubles down on what wasn't working.
  3. Wentz was on fire to start the game, then terrible from the before the half onwards.  On first look, I thought the ball placement was off on the Reagor interception, that one was more on him, though Reagor's route could have been better.  Thought he got a bit reckless on that one and paid for it.  The Hightower one looked like a combination of sloppy route, with the WR not working back to the ball on a comeback, but possibly bad decision as well, CB could have been squatting on that but won't know until we see the overhead view.
  4. Wentz stubborn insistence on standing in the pocket and taking sacks instead of throwing the ball away during the 2nd half was maddening.
  5. Accuracy issues throughout that 2nd half as well.
  6. D played just OK.  Coverage was pretty good, Slay and Maddox both had their moments.  McLeod did some nice things as well.  DL needed to get home more than they did.  That was supposed to be a matchup that favoured us, they stopped the run as usual but didn't convert often enough in pass rush situations.
  7. Jackson looked good early, Sweat looks to be building on last year as well.
  8. Except for Reagor's bobble and Elliot's long miss, ST was good.  Johnston was booming the punts and the coverage was good, even on the long ones.
  9. Hard to know what to make of the OL, will take a re-watch but I'm sure there's plenty of blame to go around.

Mostly agree with #1, although not sure a moving pocket is actually easier for a very inexperienced group of blockers to execute...there could be a good reason they didnt use that.

As far as adjustment....I think the early success might have had something to do with that. Defense certainly was never really the issue...they only gave up 260 yards total, and the offense gifted the 'football team" with a couple of short fields. While it may nopt have been obvious at halftime though, By the middle of the third, it should have been obvious something needed to change. It might be harder to make big changes at that point, but it's hardly impossible.

Just thought this was a bad job of coaching this week, and Wentz was just bad after the first 25 minutes. Some very odd choices made by Doug just before halftime helped Washington score and COULD have cost more. I generally like his aggressiveness, but today he was reckless, particularly given a poor O-line and Wentz not at his best.

This team will play a lot better this year....that Washington D line is no joke and it proved a perfect storm

Cut Hightower as far as I’m concerned

also, is it possible that Wentz got his back hurt on one of those sacks in the second quarter?  There was one where he seemed to get kind of bent up on the ground.  After that we saw a lot of those balls sailing again.

I hope this isn't gonna be a repeat of 2018 where Wentz wasn't right because of his back but they kept throwing him out there.

Two things about that game plan:

  1. It looked like every other 2019 game plan, except with more deep shots down the field. Same WR quick-throw/screen attempts that get -1 yard (or are dropped), same stuck-in-mud screen game, same leaving Wentz in the pocket, same calling run plays on 2 and 10 that set-up 3rd and long. It's now year 3 without Reich and Flip, with various offensive "minds", and Doug's the only common denominator.
  2. They knew they were going into this game with at least 1 inexperienced offensive lineman (Herbig) and that there was a strong chance it would be 2, since Lane was unlikely to go. Yet, they still went with a game plan like they had all 5 returning/healthy starters from last season. Square peg, round hole.
I also think we're teetering very close to having to come to grips with those 13 games in 2017 being Wentz's "Foles in 2013" outlier season in an otherwise hit or miss career where he'll have stretches like the last 4 games of 2019, then stretches of games like yesterday. In Year 5 we're still seeing him make poor decisions like holding the ball too long (while compounding it by not securing it) or locking in mentally (and physically with his eyes) on a receiver from the snap, and hearing him say he has to get better, all the while not getting better. The greats like Brady, Brees, Rodgers don't need 5 years (and counting) to clean up those things.

In 2017 I was hoping Wentz’s ceiling was Rodgers. Now I’m thinking his ceiling might be Philip Rivers, who is very good but never stopped making mistakes.

games like yesterday make me question how good wentz really is.  kinda have to cut him some slack due to that horrible oline situation but alot of what went on is with him.

Bad collapse you saw coming as soon as the INT late in second qtr.

Wentz trying to duck under sacks is going to get him hurt. He does that even with more starters on the line, it’s not just yesterday’s turnstile line.

Zach Ertz and Howie Roseman reportedly got into "a very heated discussion" in front of others after a recent practice.

Is this what caused the #Eagles tight end to speak out on his contract situation — or the result of it?
I read somewhere (Jeff McLane ?) that Ertz comment on not knowing if things were mutual was reaction to not being named a captain.
