I'm not sure what to think about this.  Bottom line if the Saudi's didn't murder the journalist then this wouldn't be about morality, it would be about business.  And from a business perspective, who can blame the players? You're worth what somebody is willing to pay you.  Somebody is willing to give you generational wealth for playing 8-14 golf tournaments a year? Heck - I'd take it.  For the players past their prime this is a no-brainer.  A little tougher for those in their prime but still.  The Tour is making money hand over fist.  Time to re-think their model.  Players have been getting huge appearance fees for years overseas but here they get squat if they don't make the cut. That for sure has to change.

No offense intended to the good Judge but the Saudi’s have done a whole lot more wrong than just kill a journalist.  Their record on human rights alone makes me think less of these guys that are willing to take money from them.

Anyway, ignoring that, I still have no interest in it - it’s like the USFL/XFL, etc.  Inferior product with guys on the downswing of their career.

not sure about the inferior product part, the production is already better than the crap the pga puts out. i don’t appreciate 40 minutes of commercials per hour, they somehow get the masters coverage right so why can’t they do that the rest of the year?

Plus the small matter of their connection to 9/11.  No one's talking about that.  Of course, it didn't seem super important to our government so not sure why it should matter to a bunch of golfers.

 
I'll ask if anyone knows.   Are they always capping LIV at 48?  With more people joining are they dropping players?  How will they just add if it's a season team event?  

I can't believe Andy Ogletree is going to make 120k shooting a +26.

I was thinking about the parallels to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the system of Apartheid in South Africa. It took decades of global condemnation to force change: sanctions, boycotts, UN Resolutions, Olympic bans, performing artists refusing to play Sun City, et al. In the end it was Mandela being freed and the majority will of the people before meaningful change and a new government was formed.

But right now there are no parallels. We’ve been fine with them pouring money into Formula 1, the Premier League, MMA, boxing, DP (neé European) Tour sanctioned events. Domestically the U.S. handles them with kid gloves and rarely condemns any of their evil misdeeds. 

In the end I think I’m OK feeling that 1) we should have nothing to do with anything funded by the Sovereign Wealth Fund, and 2) the PGA Tour has held a monopoly in professional golf for too long.

why? most of those guys were playing in other tours anyways and not making much money. they said one guy one 4 or 5 tourneys in south africa last year and only made like $4k for those wins total. this weekend already changed their lives with the money made.

 
i like Jt, but he is the one the seem to be talking to the most about this and he was born with a silver spoon. yes, he worked hard to be where he is but his family had a golf pedigree and he was financially stable from day one. the real players they should be talking to are the ones who are barely making it from week to week. #### and don’t even get me started on the caddies and how the pga treats them, it’s pretty damn gross. 

 
i also read the winning caddie made $475k and it doesn’t come out of Scheatzels purse :shock:

Not that Charl hasn't had a very nice career of on course earning, but he made $4,920,481 since 2017-18.  He made $4 mill today.  BESIDES what they paid him to come play.  It's a ridiculous opportunity for these guys.

 
So does it lose "excitement" that these guys are guaranteed big money? If you are guaranteed these big fees are you practicing as much?   

Just curious where that ends up or if it matters at all.

Idk. Saying this putt is worth 5 million bucks has a certain appeal though. 

 
I thought the PGA commish gave good answers to Nantz in the LIV discussion today.

I won't watch any of LIV. And I hope all those players that took the money get booed mercilessly at any other events they're allowed to play in.

i enjoyed watching the LIV and will be watching every tourney they hold :shrug:   Not a fan of CBS commentators sounding like fox news/cnn and being so opinionated instead of just speaking as to what the other tour is

The other tour is an attempt by some very bad people to use these golfers to moneywash their image. It's disgusting. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course, and that's mine.

the pga tour is focusing on what is doing on with the money aspect and not addressing their own issues which is a joke in itself. i won’t pretend to live in a glass house, i wear clothes and play clubs made in asia by forced labor.

The guys running LIV cut up a reporter with a bone saw piece by piece while he was alive, but yes let’s focus on where golf clubs are made which is totally the same thing.

You saying that buying golf clubs made in China (as most of our goods are) and these guys taking money directly from Mr. Bone Saw are the same things is one of the bigger reaches I’ve ever seen here.
 

I mean enjoy the LIV, I don’t care what you or anybody watches, but turning yourself into a pretzel to justify it is strange. 

 
I have been pimping the PGA since the covid return as maybe the best thing in sports.  But I will say the "Playing Through" or "Eye on the Course" or whatever it is where I can see the players in a tiny box but only hear the EFFING COMMERCIALS that are playing beside them is maddening.  The three leaders are teeing off on 18 today, within 2 shots of each other.  If Rory screws up it's anyone's tourney.  Instead of actually seeing where the ball is going/lands and hearing commentary on it, I got to listen to 2 minutes of ads.  I wanted to shoot my tv.  When the coverage comes BACK, we got two minutes of Rory et al walking to their balls.  We couldn't have had the ads during the WALKING!?!?!?  Screw you Jim Nantz!

And with that, I'll go back to being horny for the US Open to start Thursday,

 
I don't understand the LIV business model.  Assuming, of course, that the intention is to create a rival tour to the PGA that will draw a large share of the tv watching golf public.  What does it have going for it?  Let's see:

1.  Fields made up of legacy acts, nobodies and controversial players (Bryson, Reed).

2.  Tournaments that have no historical significance.  I mean, even the John Deere has some history.

3.  No actual TV partner.  And I doubt they get one.  Fox might go there?

Then you add the fact that these ridiculously weak fields are playing for obscene amounts of money.  As if that is somehow appealing to me as the viewer?  It is more off putting than anything.

LIV will only last as long as its executioner overlords want to keep dumping billions of their own cash into.  It will never grow organically. 

 
I had top 3 at PGA (JT, WZ, Young)…going a different route this time…thinking SS or Colin…Xander, Berger…

I played some Burns and some Fitzpatrick.  Fitz won the '13 US Am at this course, for the little that is worth. 

Also parlayed each with Iga at Wimbledon to jack up the value, just cause I'm a degen.

It is strictly there for the benefit of the people pumping cash into it. It’s not a competitive alternative.

I'm back and forth with Fitz v Xander...Fitz does make more sense...Xander feels a bit forgotten, but his betting odds are a lot higher than Fitz.

X has to prove it to me before I'll bet him to win a major again.  He's the king of winning tourneys that don't matter, and contending but coming up small in majors.  I'll bet him Top 20, but not to win.
