Hopefully we never have to hear about the 2013 amateur open ever again. Even watching featured group coverage of other groups you couldn't get away from them mentioning it. So annoying. 

 
That was a helluva tournament. There were a couple of times over the weekend where I thought "Scottie's gonna run away with this". Kudos to the champ, Zalatoris, Scheffler, and rest for putting on a heck of a show.

Now have 8 of top 50. This will be close to 20 I’d bet by end of summer. 

Money is too good and PGA will have to adapt.

 
I don't imagine there's ever been a professional sport where the weaker players make more money in a rival league.  Eventually, they'll all go, or there will be some kind of merger. 

Because, money.

 
Not surprising that Brooks would jump ship.   He went through that incredible stretch, but I think he's settled into a life of comfort so why not take the money.

There was this thing called the USFL where stars Herschel Walker, Steve Young plus a ton of no names made more $s than they could have dreamed in the NFL.  And they made it for 1-2 years before it collapsed.  It's the same here. But the Saudi royal family has mostly unlimited resources and the USFL didn't.

The PGA Tour would have been better off dropping the John Deere type events and settling on a 20-25 tournament  schedule and letting players leave for 6-10 LIV tournaments a year for bigger cash.  Maybe make a requirement they play in at least 20 PGA events.  The rest of the year is theirs to do whatever.  In hindsight, Jay made some bad choices.  But I'm not so sure the Saudis don't get 1-2 years into this and just stop paying.  Then all the players that went are rich, but without a way to play golf until they grovel back to the Euro or PGA Tour

If they have enough cash they could crush the PGA Tour. 

I kind of thought the same thing about the NCAA and NIL.  Let's say the Saudis decided they wanted to back a football league where they offered all the major high school recruits huge cash bonuses and contracts to play.  Could all the universities keep up?

It only takes a few of the top guys to jump ship for the dough before all the dominoes fall.

Brooks has won 34 mill and that doesnt include any endorsements.....

You made 50 mill but now you want 200 mill 

It feels like its jsut something for the Rich guys to do currently :)

The other common thread is many of the bigger names are known to be d-bags.

 
I think the only way to stop it is if the masters and us open prevent them from playing. These guys rightfully don’t care about playing in the valspar for relative peanuts and will just cash checks and play in the 3-4 meaningful tournaments a year  

It’s gross but it isn’t going away otherwise.

Not really much different than any athlete playing any sport ever. 

 
Brooks has a hot wife and is seemingly disinterested in doing anything about winning more. It was inevitable.  Spieth seems like the next most likely target if UA would sign off on it.

it is a recurring theme (not 100% but still) 

I think the thing I’m having a hard time embracing is this idea that they’re the disruptor, like it’s this super innovative unique thing that’s taking the game to new heights. The next big thing.

Naw, man it’s greed. Been around for thousands of years.

All these guys think generational wealth will make their lives so much more complete than merely having…right, the generational wealth they already had. While trying to destroy the games traditions. HAT TRICK ALERT Funded by one of the purest forms of evil on the planet.

I mean, whatever.  There's a thread on this site right now about a guy about to leave his new job of 6 months for a 15% raise and a better 401k because his new boss micro-manages him a little.  Everyone in there is saying "go for it, life is short."  Loyalty my ###.

Why should athletes be loyal to the traditions of a game they just happen to be super talented at?  Suck it up and just play golf right?  Well, this is their job.  This is how they make a living.  Not their fault someone is offering them more generational wealth than the generational wealth they already have.  The PGA Tour should have stepped up, changed their model, and competed with the LiV instead of thinking their silly traditions would win out.

While I don't disagree but the first part is more like - We are on the PGA tour and the PGA decided now that you have to play in 25 tournaments every year or you have to play 5 rounds every week.... basically changing what the original contract is.....

but point taken :)

I don’t fault these guys for taking this money. Am surprised it took this long for Brooks. He seems like a perfect LIV tour guy. 

 
The PGA tour could become whatever tennis is. Anyone ever watched five minutes of tennis between majors?  Didn't think so.  

I will watch a Sunday back nine if the leaderboard is interesting.  More departures makes that far less likely.  

Only thing that can stem this tide is if Augusta steps in and says they won't invite them.

Still not gonna shut them out.  They won't remove the golfers as they earned the rankings, but those points will decay over time.  It is interesting that LIV isn't yet part of the OWG equation yet, I wonder if any of these guys even considered that?With tours like Sunshine and Nordic Golf being included in OWGR I'm sure LIV will be there soon.  Hell even some of the KFT events qualify.

The Masters is the one to watch.  They have all the power in the world to set precedent and if there's one event that might sway decisions it's that one.  If you have all the money you'll ever need and can't play at Augusta is that enough to get you back to a qualifying tour, if not PGA?  The field at the Masters is heavily dependent upon OWGR and as those points and exemptions decay those spots are going to fade for guys like DJ and Koepka. 

This is what is the most surprising to me, some of the names that have jumped with so many BIG open questions.  Will LIV be included in OWGR?  If not, a lot of the free path to majors is gone.  Open qualifying will be mostly a breeze for the bigger guys but again, the Masters.  Will Augusta get involved in the political aspect (can't imagine it)?
