Could that have been a straight red? Seemed super dangerous with his foot hitting him in the head.

Not sure on the thresholds for Yellows vs Reds.
My novice understanding is that it could have been. I believe Landon Donovan said so as well.

If studs to the face isn’t a red I don’t know what is.
Eh, my novice take is that a red card is so huge and devastating that it should be reserved for something intentionally egregious (looking at you, Zidane). Here, I view the spikes up as showing a reckless disregard for safety, but he seemed to at least be going for the ball and did not intend to connect with the opponent.

So, while I recognize that arguably could have and maybe should have been a red, from a viewing perspective of a game of this magnitude I'm okay with the yellow.

You can't just reserve red cards for malicious or deliberate fouls. Cards exist to deter plays that endanger players. And the most dangerous plays are reckless, not intentional. Zidane's headbutt had absolutely no chance of hurting Gattuso. Studs up to the face can give a guy a concussion or take out an eye. Two-foot tackles above the ball have ended careers.

Makes sense. I appreciate this input even if I'm still debating whether I agree.

Croatian keeper is the game's MVP so far.
Easily.

He's been great all tournament. I think he was the same guy from four years ago, too, who was a awesome.

I assume he's a goalie on some massive club that I should know but don't.

You guys are forgetting one thing with your ref comments.

IT'S MICHAEL OLIVER, THE WORST REF IN THE EPL
You say this every time. And he's not. He's consistently one of the best.
And yet he's not. :boxing:

And I'm going to keep saying it :lmao:
I can literally do a search on ranking refs in the EPL and every one of them will have him in the top 3-5. He's listed #1 on most that I just looked at. At Whoscored, looking at it objectively, he's #1.

The worst in the EPL? That's just nonsense. There is absolutely nothing objective about that statement. By what measure is he the worst? Can you find post anything that substantiates that? Any list or ranking or measure that remotely agrees with that?

It's such a weird take when the consensus, looking at every list/ranking has him as the best ref. I mean, minority opinions are cool and all, but at least give a reason for it.

Hot take: Messi is one of the worst offensive players left in the tournament. And I'll keep saying it!

Manchester United have won only 15 of 39 matches Oliver has refereed, just 38 per cent. This involves 11 draws and 13 defeats. :ptts:
