Great shot. Argentina earned that one. Netherlands was damn good - that's heartbreaking to kill it and still lose.

Argentina doing what Brazil couldn't. Good on them for regaining their composure after blowing a late lead.

Going to be a great night in Argentina. Not only do they move to the semis, but they get to watch Brazil lose too. I'm pretty sure that's about as good of a sporting night as they could have short of winning it all.

Watching PKs in this WC has changed my thinking on PK taker order. Seems making the first one is a big motivation. I used to think the best should be 3 or 4, but maybe 1 is the most important.
Kind of an interesting thing to consider. Yeah, setting the tone is needed, but at the same time having your best PK taker to close it out really seems nice too.

In the last Euros when Italy won on PKs, the PKs almost felt over when Jorginho stepped up to take the last kick given how he seemingly never misses PKs.

You can not count on it going all 5 kickers. Neymar didn't get a kick today. Don't know if he's Brazil's best taker, but 5th doesn't always get a chance.
I've seen a lot of philosophies, Best kicker going 1, 3, or 4.

That was way better than last night's NFL game.
True that. It's weird. For me, the World Cup is really highlighting what crappy products much of our professional sports are. Takes too long and is over-commercialized. I want a game that takes two hours and doesn't show many commercials. Few or no goals? That's ok if the product is good.

I used to watch damn near everything.

Get off my lawn.

Oh, and as good as the World Cup has been, the Fox broadcasting crew has sucked. Alexi Lalas, go away.

:goodposting:

And definitely part of why I hate the idea of stopping the clock during stoppages in play.

Speaking of yellows, what was that yellow card for during the PKs? The announcers just ignored it.

I'm going to assume either dissent, or doing a little dance on the penalty spot while walking back
Who got it? The Argentinian goalie?

ETA: All I saw was the ref raise his hand and I couldn't tell who he was booking and the announcers/broadcast seemed to just ignore it.

Very true
The pay to play model is hurting our future in the sport.
So, what, we socialize the sport?
Good question. I think you summed it up below...
Agreed. But from just a practical standpoint I see no fix.
The kids around the world see Futbol as a way out. They play in the streets with whatever they can find.
The US makes it a rich kid sport.

I thought it was up-field where the teams were standing?

Respectfully, I'm not following the point. I see no fix and it seems like basketball has cornered the market on the "poor children can still show up and just play" market.
