Overall, like the extra time being given, it seems like it's been a concerted effort to not give a lot of cards.

It was a bit frustrating watch some cynical fouls get away without being carded, but at the same time, since I hate the yellow card accumulation rule, I like the overall end result with relatively few cards given.

And as I finish typing that, 2 cards given in the last 3 minutes :lmao:

If that ends up being the case, and you're Spain, do you not try and score against Japan and keep Germany out? Tie or loss means absolutely nothing to Spain in 3rd game (barring giving up like 5 goals) but either keeps Germany out.

Fullkrug really got his hips around from a pretty awkward angle. Pretty insane that he was able to generate that type of power.
It was all about that control to feed him though IMO.
I thought Musiala was a bit fortunate there as the ball popped up on him and skittered across his chest without hitting his arm, but he also made about a dozen other silky little turns in the match. Definitely has that Clint Dempsey "tries ****" dawg in him.

Yup. He and Olmo looked on it today.

If I had to take some odds on a future Baloon winner, Musiala would be my guy. Chelsea academy product but it seemed he was always going to leave for Bayern. He was eligible for England, Germany and Nigeria.

Are we still allowed to take Mbappe?

Two costing you a game seems a little rich IMO. Wish they would change that to 3.

Agreed. I'd rather it be 3 and it doesn't reset at all throughout the tournament.

The one that impresses me so much every time I see him is Vinicius Jr.

He is so freaking dangerous with the ball at his feet.

Okay gang are you ready?
Group E scenarios......

Spain advances with a win or draw OR a loss AND...
the Spain loss is by less than 13 goals and CRC/GER draw
OR
the Spain loss is by 14 and CRC/GER draw AND CRC doesn't outscore Spain by 8+ goals)
OR
Germany wins and combined margin of the Spain loss and Germany win is less than 8
OR
Germany wins and combined margin of the Spain loss and Germany win is exactly 8 and Germany doesn't outscore Spain by 6+
OR
Germany wins and combined margin of the Spain loss and Germany win is exactly 8 and Germany outscores Spain by exactly 6 and Spain has superiors fair play score (currently ESP -1, GER -3)
OR
Germany wins and combined margin of the Spain loss and Germany win is exactly 8 and Germany outscores Spain by exactly 6 and Spain and Germany have same fair play score and Spain draws the lucky ping pong ball.

Spain is out with a loss and a Costa Rica win - which would be pretty hilarious tbh.

----------

Japan advances with a win OR....
a Draw and GER/CRC draw
OR
a Draw and GER win by exactly 1 goal and Japan scores at least as many goals as Germany does.

Japan is out with a loss

----------

Costa Rica advances with a win OR....
a Draw and Spain loses by 14 or more goals
OR
a Draw and Spain loses by exactly 13 goals and Costa Rica outscores Spain by 8 or more goals

Costa Rica is out with a loss

----------

Germany advances with a win AND...
A Japan loss
OR
JPN/ESP draw and Germany wins by 2 or more goals
OR
JPN/ESP draw and Germany win by 1 goal and Germany outscores Japan
OR
Spain loses and the combined margin of the Germany win and Spain loss is 9+ goals
OR
Spain loses and the combined margin of the Germany win and Spain loss is exactly 8 goals and Germany outscores Spain by 7 or more goals
OR
Spain loses and the combined margin of the Germany win and Spain loss is exactly 8 goals and Germany outscores spain by exactly 6 goals and Germany has a better fair play record (currently Spain -1, Germany -3)
OR
Spain loses and the combined margin of the Germany win and Spain loss is exactly 8 goals and Germany outscores spain by exactly 6 goals and Germany and Spain have the same fair play record and Germany draws the lucky ping pong ball.

Germany is out with a loss or draw

So there you go! That Germany goal was very helpful for Costa Rica as it eliminated the possibility of them getting eliminated with 6 points.

Fun first half between CAM-SER. Both #11s yellow carded while celebrating goals off the bench. No idea why they were singled out.

heart warming- especially seeing Messi's face along with the kid.

but mostly? embarrassing. Guardado is a legend who just lost the game and likely Mex's chances at advancing. and you're going to go and do that?

ah hell... I'd have done the same thing. LEGEND
I think that clip it was after a la liga game between Barça and Betis. Messi is wearing maroon, Guardado's kid in green and white stripes with a la liga patch on the sleeve.

In contrast, viewership in Germany was only 9.23 million for their opening game on Wednesday, less than half the normal number for weekday games in prior World Cups. According to a German friend of mine, there is a high level of disgust with FIFA corruption and Qatar human rights issues in Germany that is putting people off the event. I saw the fan demonstrations at club games prior to the tournament but didn’t believe they were serious about it.

Germany seems like a country that really has its stuff together.

I still don’t trust them

You’d think it would take like 5 seconds for the world to win but no it was actually close

:lmao:
