MLS Buzz

We are leaving the group stages with 5 points and the youngest starting XI in the tournament all with a doofus manager handicapping us. This team is elite.
When all is said and done GGG got us into the knockouts. And, funny enough, the one big error we've made didn't matter much as a 1-0 win over Wales wouldn't have changed anything. Still would have finished second.

We definitely need to figure out a way to have better touches in the opposing third, but I can't help but be ecstatic about this result. The Netherlands game is a freeroll.

----

Love this.

One other thing about the US going defense first...

The odds that the US strings together a series of 1-0 wins, with maybe a PK win or two thrown in, during a late run in the WC -- like Greece winning the Euros or Leicester winning the EPL -- is miles more likely than beating four or five good teams 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, etc.

I think it makes a lot of sense if you're thinking about what gives you the best chance to advance a long way.

Honestly* it's hard to argue with anything our coach has done. He's legit put us in position to succeed in every game and we appeared to the better team in each match.
I'm a big soccer nerd and avowed GGG hater. That said, he's gotten the tactics right for initial setup of each game. I think he's not done well on the subs (at least the timing was better today), but I cannot argue with the prep that he's done for these young kids. Also, swallowing his pride and making Ream the focal point of the defense was immense here.
:goodposting: (overall)
His subbing and in game adjustments have been horrible. His game plan vs England was poor. But I give him credit for his starting lineups, getting out of the group and who he left off the roster all together.

How close is the unmnt to purging all MLS players?

In the future, I would guess 90-95% of the players will be European based, but that is kind of meaningless since most of them will be developed in MLS before going to Europe.

MLS is absolutely critical in developing young players and getting them off to the big leagues in Europe. With out that pipeline, we can't continue developing as a country.

I was having this argument with someone today. he was saying how MLS players would wilt under the pressure of this match.

First I was like, Trip is that you? Then I was confused since half the lineup either played in MLS at one point or was in an MLS academy in their youth. But apparently once players are sold to Europe the “wilting” gene magically disappears. It was annoying.

And then Shaq Moore gets in there and 🤦‍♂️

But have you seen that doofus' behind-the-back bounce passes?
I have to laugh when the headlines pop up on my phone and they are all excited about his antics.

Okay, I'll bite: why is he a doofus?
I didn't write it so I don't know why that twitter account thinks this, but my previous post sums up my thoughts.

Okay, I'll bite: why is he a doofus?

there is a section of people on twitter who believe that he never should have been hired, since the hire reeked of Nepotism (he was basically hired by his brother).

Since then, there has been an online campain to get him fired. Literally anything that went wrong with the team was always his fault. After acting like idiots for the last two years, those same people are left with "advancing in spite of the coach"

As an aside, he has done a lot good and a lot bad over this cycle. But nothing to be made to look like a clown like some want to hope for.

Well not magically, but playing in bigger and better competitions against better talent does help.

The Netherlands will be a tough game, but they won't bunker -- which helps us some.

And if you assume the US finishes 2nd in the group (instead of 1st) they're always very likely to draw a top 8-10 team in the world in the Round of 16. Given that, you could do a lot worse than the Dutch (Spain, France, Brazil, Argentina).

The issue with the Europe vs. MLS thing is that we KNOW that some european based players do absolutely wilt... in central american heat+humidity+atmosphere.

A) I think everybody is on board with the model of playing in MLS at a very young age and then advancing to better leagues

B) The active MLS players have looked terrible this WC, and that's a euphemism. I get that the Federation has a vested interest in promoting the league, but Berhalter looked over or was very slow to react to several key players (Scally, Musah, Ream, Pefok etc. etc. etc.) during qualifying and gave MLS scrubs opportunities that jeopardized our qualifying. Pefok, Brooks and others should be on this roster...not ****ing Morris and Shaq Moore...it's a disgrace.

Sure, but correlation does not equal causation. Over the years there have been Euro based US players that were a waste, and MLS players that accomplished great things.

There’s also some dispute about what constitutes an MLS player. To me, guys like Aaronson and Adams will always be MLS players no matter where they end up in the future. You can’t heap praise on those guys and crap on MLS at the same time.

His gameplan against England was one of the best things he's done.

Yep, line on my main book to qualify says Netherlands -250 USA +200, so prob nearer to 30% than 35%, but solid chance
Works out to be 68-32. I'll take that (as a fan, not a gambler).

But the USA is listed at 150/1 to win it and that's not a terrible bet IMO. IIRC it's actually longer odds than they went off before the tournament.

Absolutely. Obviously there are other issues with him, but that’s not one imo.

I never thought Shaq Moore should have been on the roster, but it’s not BECAUSE he plays in MLS.

And I 100% disagree with your assertion that everyone is onboard with MLS academies. Most people think these kids should all bypass MLS entirely and sign in the Hungarian 2nd division because Europe

When is our match with Netherlands?
9am ET on Sat
Damn it. That’s 6am out here.
I'm pretty sure that's the start time for the pregame show. Kickoff is at 7am PST
I guess I can start drinking at 7:00am

If the last 10 days has taught me anything it’s I can drink much earlier in the day than I ever thought.

USA is +100 at my book. Do you guys think they have a better than even chance of winning?
All the oddsmakers I've seen have it exactly 50/50 on which team advances. Since the US only advances with a win I'd guess they're 50% likely to win.
I'm going to bet for Iran. That pretty much guarantees a US victory.
You're welcome fellas. Always willing to take one for the team.

Reverse gambling jinx works again.

Yeah, I thought the initial setup vs. ENG was really good. Weah stretched them early and then the denial of the center of the field with pressing, marking and shadowing was really great. England's midfield was nonexistent IMO.
The initial setup was fine. The lineup was good. But how do you go into a game against England and not high press Harry effing Maguire and Luke Shaw? The US is known for pressuring and pestering and outworking the opponent and you sit back and let Maguire stand on the ball and pass back and forth? You don't. And GGG got that plan wrong IMO.

At some point you have to consider the scoreboard. He took over a failed program and all he’s done is win.

That's the face of a man who has just had his testicle removed from his esophagus.
I'll tell my hit in the nuts story.

I played roller hockey throughout my teens and into my 20s. Was warming up for a tournament early, didn't have my cup on yet, and (stupidly) say down behind a goal to retie my skates while others were warming up. Some guys hits a slapshot that he curves just around the net and the ball* strikes my nuts squarely while they were basically resting just on the floor as I was in the seated position on the ground - effectively sandwiching them hard.

I cannot explain the immense pain I felt. I couldn't breathe and therefore couldn't even yell or scream for several seconds. So, I'm laying there in absolute pain until somebody realizes it and like three guys help me get off the rink and over the boards. For about the next hour or two I laid on the grass in indescribable pain with as much ice as anybody could get me. I puked twice. I had to miss my first game and when the pain subsided some I played the remainder of the tournament beyond sore.

That nut shot was far and away the most intense and excruciating pain I've ever felt. But, the next day I felt significantly better and in a few days I was back to normal. And to the best of my knowledge and belief I had no lasting effects.**

Point being, I hope the above is what happened to Pulicic.

* It was an outdoor tournament where a roller hockey ball is used instead of a puck and they are much easier to curve on a shot.

** I do actually have issues with my swimmers that make it statistically improbable for me to bear children, but I believe it's unrelated to this incident.

This is almost as good as scoring a goal in a World Cup.

You were doing so well until you mentioned one player that should be no where near this roster.... :boxing:

After wet and bumpy, I'm glad it was CP that scored that goal. That the goal came from quick reversal of the field is something we haven't done much, if at all, so it was nice to see it.

True, there are some in Europe that can not seem to work out for the US and some MLS guys that do wonders. Zimmerman earned his spot for sure. But where they are playing now to me is more important than where they came from. The MLS should buy into being a stepping stone to Europe. I believe it will raise the level of MLS and its players. And the more US players that go from MLS to major leagues in Europe and get meaningful playing time will raise the level of the USMNT.

But I also have to wonder, with so many US players based in Europe, would we be more of a contender with a better coach? I just see a guy with limitations in his in-game management. Maybe he is the man for the job. I do not know.

We might actually be better off finishing 2nd in the group.

England is very likely looking at a quarterfinal game with France. If Poland can manage a draw with Argentina tomorrow, all our quarterfinal possibilities would be pretty winnable if we somehow get by the Dutch.

lol at wanting John Brooks on this team. The central defenders have been immense, just awesome in all three games. I hated the defense for offense sub today knowing there were 15-20 minutes left but can admit I was wrong in retro. The worst thing I saw today was the complete lack of awareness and tactical knowledge of how to close out a game. They actually needed less Europe and more CONCACAF over the last 20 minutes.
