Man, if I were an 17-20 year old midfielder in the US system I'd be bummed at my prospects of starting for the next 5 or 6 years. MMA have probably got it locked up when healthy for quite awhile. Lots of room for depth and maybe some tactical flexibility, but it's going to be hard for anyone to break in.

ETA: who in that age range is even legit on the radar right now? McGlynn?

Just looked up Ben Lederman and see that he’s capped with Poland. I had no idea. He’s a bit outside the age range at 22.

Adrian Gill is 16. I only know about him because he’s a friend of a friend in Denver, never seen him play. He’s a midfielder who’s at Barcelona, dual nat who recently turned down an invite from Spain saying he’s committed to the US.

I suppose I would throw Caden Clark and Paxten Aaronson onto the list too.

Caden has fallen off.
Def Jack and Paxten, Luna too. I think Cade Cowell could be a more skillful Morris...and that's useful, but kinda MF/forward tweener.

I'll be curious to see how he develops. I've seen him play like maybe 200 minutes, so huge grain of salt, but on first impression he reminds me of players like Etcheverry and Valderrama. If he'd played 25 years ago I'd be drooling over him, but the game is just so different now and there aren't many players in that mold.

(feel free to tell me I'm crazy on that comparison -- like I said, haven't seen him much)

I've felt the play and diving has been good by comparison with previous WCs but yesterday and today as team get desperate you are seeing some really bad attempts to draw penalties. It still seems like a regional thing although it still crops up with just about any side from time to time. Still wish they would do retroactive cards for the most egregious ones.

I haven't been watching closely, but it has looked like the Danes were controlling this game but that was a great counter attack.

Australia!! They're having themselves quite the Cup so far.
They are through with a draw or win, so that goal is huge....they move on as long as they don't concede 2 goals.
No longer true. If Tunisia can hold their lead over France, then Australia needs the win. I doubt the players even knew that they might need the win when that goal was scored though...seemed like it came just a few minutes after Tunisia's goal.

Is France possibly letting Tunisia through to keep Denmark out? I can't imagine they would care, but they sure don't need to win as long as they keep it within a goal or 2. Not watching that match at all, but they looked like the best team in the whole thing and are now down 1-0 to a subpar team (at least not at their level).

i agree that I don't think they would care. The likelihood they meet again is so low (I think maybe only in the finals or semis)

Winner of US Netherlands faces winner of 1C 2D... If the US were to win, I'm not sure who I'd rather face of these 2 AUS DEN.
Current favorite for winner of 1C / 2D still has to be Argentina, right?

The betting would suggest that. Poland has managed 2 clean sheets so far so it may not be a given.

A draw effectively opens the door for Saudi Arabia to win the group if they pull another upset and beat Mexico.

Likelihood would be Arg>Pol>RSA in my opinion

It would be pretty fun to have one quarterfinal be Saudi Arabia vs Australia while another is Argentina vs France. I mean the Saudis would have to like win by 3 or more but it would be funny.

Is Denmark now the highest ranked team going into the tournament to be eliminated in the group stage?

Looking at the rankings if you had crazy results in the next 2.5 days it appears that you could have only 5 of the top 15 in the round of 16.

Qualified: Netherlands, Brazil, Portugal, England, France
Eliminated: Italy, Denmark
Can still qualify: Spain, Germany, Argentina, Uruguay, Switzerland, Mexico, Belgium, Croatia

Saudi wins group with a win and a Argie-Pol draw..? Is that correct?

Correct. And Mexico advancing is fairly straightforward - Argentina wins and Mexico just needs a win against SA.

I wanted to reply with Italy if you had worded it a little differently ;)

crazy they didn't qualify

If you want to know why FIFA is anxious to expand the field look no further than Europe. And to be fair, there's no chance Italy isn't one of the top 16 teams in the world, much less top 32. Euro qualifying is brutal if you get a bad draw and hit poor form.

there will be an entire generation of kids (think from elementary through graduating high school) that will have not watched Italy play in a WC, and that is assuming they end a 12 year drought by qualifying in 2026.

Even crazier is that they have not advanced to the second round since 2006. That is insane to think about.....
