******** Mexico, they are like a cockroach. I still see a realistic way they can advance and keep their streak alive when looking at the standings.

México likely to break their curse of getting eliminated in the Round of 16.

yes I think their %'s are low but them beating SA and Argentina beating Poland is not outrageous either.

It’s probably the chalk scenario tbh

I don't get this reference...

I just mean it’s the most likely scenario to happen in matchday 3. Chalk=betting favorite.

The goal difference doesn't favor them. Plus Saudi Arabia looks more likely to score goals than México.

Since the only realistic way for Mexico to advance is to win and have something bad happen to either Poland or Argentina, I think the GD may take care of itself.

Group C to advance:
  • Argentina 76%
  • Poland 68%
  • Saudi Arabia 31%
  • Mexico 24%

I love trying to figure out how these are calculated. There seems to be a high probability placed on Mexico and SA drawing. Because if SA wins, they are advancing no matter what. If Mexico wins, there are a bunch of realistic scenarios where they advance.

If Poland-Arg play to a draw, Mexico would need to win by 4, since they’re unlikely to catch ARG on total goals scored.

I still think it’s doable even though they’ve scored *checks notes* zero so far

Argentina absolutely does not want to play France in round 2, so they’re going all out to win vs Poland. If that happens, depending on the scoreline, Mexico might need less than a 4 goal win to move on.

And if Poland pulls off the upset, any Mexico win sends them through.

Okay...deep breaths....Group C scenarios....

Poland Advance With a win or draw OR....
a loss by 1 or 2 and Saudi Arabia/Mexico draw
or
a loss by 3 and Saudi Arabia/Mexico draw and Poland scores at least the same number of goals as Saudi Arabia
or
a loss and a Mexico win and the combined margin is 2 or 3
or
a loss and a Mexico win and the combined margin is 4 and Mexico doesn't outscore them by more than 1
or
a loss and a Mexico win and the combined margin is 4 and Mexico outscores them by 2 and Poland has a better fair play record (currently Poland -4, Mexico -6)
or
a loss and a Mexico win and the combined margin is 4 and Mexico outscores them by 2 and they are tied on fair play and Poland's lucky ping pong ball is drawn

Argentina advance with a win OR....
a draw and a Saudi Arabia/Mexico draw
or
a draw and Saudi Arabia loses by 1 or 2
or
a draw and Saudi Arabia loses by 3 and Mexico doesn't outscore Argentina by 4 or more

Argentina is eliminated with a loss

Saudi Arabia advances with a win OR....
a draw and an Argentina loss
or
a draw and a Poland loss by 4 or more
or
a draw and a Poland loss by 3 and Saudi Arabia outscores Poland

Saudi Arabia is eliminated with a loss

Mexico advances with a win AND....
an Argentina Loss
or
a Poland/Argentina draw and Mexico wins by 4 or more
or
a Poland/Argentina draw and Mexico wins by 3 and Mexico outscores Argentina by 4 or more
or
a Poland loss and the combined margin is 5+
or
a Poland loss and the combined margin is 4 and Mexico outscores Poland by 3 or more
or
a Poland loss and the combined margin is 4 and Mexico outscores Poland by 2 and Mexico has a better fair play record (currently Poland -4, Mexico -6)
or
a Poland loss and the combined margin is 4 and Mexico outscores them by 2 and they are tied on fair play and Poland's lucky ping pong ball is drawn

Mexico is eliminated with a draw or loss

Have to root for Poland to make it out. They played and beat a good SA team. And my heart just bleeds if that shuts L Tri out.

Tldr.

That Spain Germany game tomorrow should be cracklin'. Other notes from today - Messi is ridiculous. That was just incredible. Oh, and Mbappe is the new Ronaldo; I don't think I've seen acceleration like that since.

In contrast, viewership in Germany was only 9.23 million for their opening game on Wednesday, less than half the normal number for weekday games in prior World Cups. According to a German friend of mine, there is a high level of disgust with FIFA corruption and Qatar human rights issues in Germany that is putting people off the event. I saw the fan demonstrations at club games prior to the tournament but didn’t believe they were serious about it.

All of Europe is under represented here.

15.3 million watched US England on Fox alone. Should easily top 20 million viewers once other platforms are added in.

20 million with Telemundo added in. Streaming numbers are still to come I believe.

Hmm. Fox is claiming this is the most watched mens game in US history but it falls well short of the numbers US Portugal did in 2014 on ESPN.

Oh I think I get it. 2014 was on ESPN. I think Fox is claiming largest on broadcast tv channels only.

The Mexico Argentina game had the lowest combined xG of the tournament so far.
If there a primer on this?

Can you rephrase the question please? I am unsure what you are asking.

edit: In case you are asking about what xG is, here is some info I copied from web

=========

Put simply, xG (short for "expected Goals") is the probability of any shot taken to result in a goal. It weighs up the difficulty of a chance by analyzing a number of relevant factors to produce a probability figure (between 0 and 1) for whether a goal ought to have been scored from the given situation.

Here is the nitty gritty https://statsbomb.com/soccer-metrics/expected-goals-xg-explained/

Fox being loose with facts? No way.

Costa Rica laughs at your CONCACAF hate.

The US, Mexico and Canada have a chance to prove a point to Asia and Africa in the final round of games.
Lol. Sucks there's been no wins so far. But I was actually thinking it's the first time we've had 3 teams nobody would want to face. I think they've represented well- just need to get a win and advance. Mex...it's just bizarre their lack of bite up top. Losing Corona and Raul still gimpy has killed them. They look like they could use chachi or Vela.

Germany seems like a country that really has its stuff together.

Also cool to wake up and see the Ticos got a W.

Read that is was their only shot on goal in 2 games? Incredible.

First Concacaf win too I believe (hopefully not the last :) )

CR looked poor through out qualifying but were just annoying enough to get through it

I did not watch as I was asleep but the stats seemed heavy in Japan's favor. Seems like it may have been one of those games
