Fair play points? JFC

Yeah, I'm not sure that scenario will do much to convert new fans no matter how exciting this is right now. Hoping one of them wins it outright.

What are you going to do though? It is not like its the first tie breaker, I think its the 5th.

I believe it's as follows:

1. Points
2. Goal Differential
3. Goals for
4. Fairplay points
5. Drawing lots
Obviously doesn’t matter here, but it’s crazy H2H doesn’t factor.

h2h does matter.

The ranking of teams in the group stage is determined as follows:[205]
  1. Points obtained in all group matches:
    • Win: 3 points;
    • Draw: 1 point;
    • Loss: 0 points;
  2. Goal difference in all group matches;
  3. Number of goals scored in all group matches;
  4. Points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
  5. Goal difference in the matches played between the teams in question;
  6. Number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;
  7. Fair play points in all group matches (only one deduction can be applied to a player in a single match):
    • Yellow card: −1 point;
    • Indirect red card (second yellow card): −3 points;
    • Direct red card: −4 points;
    • Yellow card and direct red card: −5 points;
  8. Drawing of lots.

I know that Mexico is USA's main rival--are most in the community rooting for Poland to advance?

I root for Mexico these days when the US isn't involved.. It's not a rivalry anymore, it's more like Canada v. US in hockey.

What the hell is wrong with you.
Taking candy from kids is getting old.

Has anyone here ever attended a USA-MEX game in Mexico?

not me. I have seen a bunch in the US though going back to the 90's.

It looks scary in Mexico. They put the US fans in a cage and some still come out bloody due to bottles smashing against the cage and breaking. That was a few years ago so I don't know if it is still a scary situation.

IMO, neither team should be eliminated because of fair play points--play another match. Too much on the line for something so subjective to be so important.

There's just no time to do it.

********. Every other sport has it figured out. FIFA should do the same.

The NFL decides things on a coin toss if every thing else is level. The Fair Play just gives one added item before the coin toss which is by far the worst.

El Tri is eventually going to be USAs B team of guys who wanted to take a easy route to making a National team.

I'll go so far as to say I think it's a great idea. Maybe the NFL should decide who gets the ball first in OT based on which team has fewer penalties.

FWIW, my Mexican buddy said never to go see the match in Mexico (we almost went to the game back in 2014 in Phoenix).

I am fine with it, honestly. Yellow cards should have more consequences.

Argentina win sucks for the US though.
Why?

Heading into the day if the US got by Netherlands (which is doable), then their next match would be either Poland or Australia. Made semi-finals actually a realistic dream.

Now if they get past Netherlands, it's Argentina for the next game.
Are you saying we aren't as good as the Saudis? ;)

I actually think that game was probably bad for anyone playing Argentina as they won't be sleeping on anyone and getting caught offguard now.
