Overall, I found the group stage very entertaining. I am happy politics stayed out of it (for the most part) and VERY thankful none of the corruption made it to the field.

A few clunkers and a few great games and just enough chaos (for a blissful 85 seconds in the second half, Costa Rica was advancing) to keep the fun up.

So just how good is this Dutch team?

8th ranked team in the world. A world Class CB (arguably the best in the world at his position) and one of the break out stars of the WC in Gekpo.

That being said they are generally considered less talented than the English team that the US either out played or played very even (depending on who you ask).

If the US plays as well as they did in the group stage, it should be a very competative game. If not, the US is very unlikely to win.

Looping back on the favorite star Fox liked to hammer during the first matches:

8 of 11 teams that won their first game advanced. Ecuador, Belgium, and Saudi Arabia failed (notable that the first two best the teams that finished 31st and 32nd in the tournament in their openers). That's 73%

3 of 11 teams that lost their first game advanced. Senegal, Australia, and Argentina. Australia the clear surprise of this trip. That's 27%

Perhaps unsurprisingly 5 of the 10 teams that drew in their first match advanced. USA (who ended up not needing that point) :towelwave: Poland and South Korea (where that point was vital as they each edged out the team they drew with on differential) and Morocco and Croatia (both of whom would have advanced if they lost - in Croatia's case if it was a close loss). Tunisia was surely happy with the point from their 0-0 draw with Denmark but if they managed even a 1-0 win that would have put them through (and made the Socceroos eliminated with 6 points)

Didn't get to watch much this morning - two questions:

1. I see somebody posted that Uruguay rested guys (Nunez and Suarez were on the bench) - did they take off with South Korea behind of tied? They had to know a goal put them out - isn't that a colossal mistake or were the subs late on?
2. I didn't see much talk in here but the players went after the refs about a call and Deuce said he thought it was a PK on Cavani - surely he wasn't talking about that dive near the end. Was there a penalty shout earlier that I didn't see? Thoughts on if it should have been a PK?
2...

All right, so, I resolved work issues so I don't need to work tomorrow. My plan then is to take the morning and introduce my kids to soccer. We just got a new TV so it makes sense to make an event of tomorrow's match.

My kids are, currently, 7, 7, 7, and 5 in their ages.* They haven't been too interested in sports, be that playing or watching or than my son likes to golf with me. I'm looking for any advice to get them excited and hopefully keep their interests. Anybody else got any experience getting your kids excited about soccer?

*Long story, see other threads.

it is a tricky question. I think at that age, bringing them to a game will be a more fun experience for kids. (are you near any MLS teams?)

I took my nephew when he was around that age to a World Cup qualifier and he absolutely loved it back in 2005. I got to watch the US England game with him just the other day as a fully grown man and he showed me the scarf I bought him that day back in 2006 and still hangs it in his room.

You can try to watch the game with them but be prepared that their attention span may wander quickly especially if they have not shown interest in sports and/or soccer before. Not knowing who any one is on the screen or why anything is of any importance may be boring to them.

How different do I need to be in a knockout pool? I have 30 points. I’m in 13/60th. First has 37.

2 points for R16 correct then 4,8,15 for the winner

Easy GBS - just get 'em all right :bowtie:
I would look for stats on public contests like the one I posted to see what's "popular" but maybe look at the wagering odds now to get some sense of what's right.

I mean the ranking will give you a good sense of the "chalk" but I would say with 5 strong contenders to win and probably another 2 or 3 with respectable chances that should be enough variety right there.

As I noted previously the bracket itself isn't all that lopsided in terms of the round of 16 matchups - there are 4 that I would consider having heavy favorites and 4 that have favorites but that can be had. Chalk won't go 8-0 but 6-2 is my own reasonable expectation. I don't see any game as looking like a straight pick em.

Good luck.

This isn't half bad. No 3 team groups and no 3rd place teams advance

Discussing this with @iandarke. For a 48 team World Cup, suggestion… 12 groups of 4 (with teams playing 3 games as now.) Top 2 in each group progress = 24 but give the best 8 group winners a bye into the R16. The remaining 16 compete in a playoff round. 8 winners face 8 with bye

I dunno - I feel like that gives the higher lettered groups perhaps too much of an advantage. It also would further exaggerate the luck of the draw - a group with a couple lightweights in it will get a better chance at a bye.

(Really should have expanded to 40 and done 10 group winners at 2 seconds with a bye but that ship has sailed)

I set up a very simple pick 'em bracket:

Here's the Link --> https://bracketchallenge.world?pool=Yanks+Rule+Limeys+Drool:R29Hb1Npcklhbg==

Password is: SuboptimalClearance

Name of the Pool is "Yanks Rule Limeys Drool"

I can't tell whether any personal info is shown, but my son, friends and co-workers are all invited so I'm trusting you all not to dox anyone.

FOUND IT

I'm not last!
I'm in 4th!

And yeah...zero memory of filling that one out.

Can’t believe we only do this every 4 years.
The European championships are very close to the same level IMO.
I love it but there’s something about a team like Saudi Arabia beating Argentina that is so unique to this tournament.
It's really cool.

And it used to be a lot crazier before cable and the internet. Even though it's an international game, different countries has their very distinct styles of play that you just didn't see outside of the WC. Now, most of the teams play similar styles...either on the front or back foot.

I was thinking about Japan...such a historic WC for them beating Spain and
Germany and tying powerhouse Costa Rica. Imagine if the US had that group and did that?!

When we watched them comprehensively dismantle the US a month or so ago, I started bumping them up my rankings. I don't see their run lasting much longer...but kudos to them for that group stage.
