That was maybe the best performance of any team. Spain 7-0 over CR was due to how dreadful Costa Rica was. The Swiss are a good side and were torn apart today.

That's a big statement. I haven't been able to watch all the games, but I felt like from highlights that Brazil could have had a similar score line yesterday but shut it down at halftime.

This is a good point and honestly believe it or not, I kind of forgot yesterday. I would have to rethink that maybe but for me the Swiss >> S. Korea and Portugal just punked them. Brazil was just playing for fun in the 2nd half and took the gas off. Portugal dominated pretty much 80+ minutes.

It sounds like a lot of the Swiss team caught the Qatar air conditioning bug that has been going around.

Just realized I read that wrong. They can push you up to half, not up your half since you can't be offside in your own half.

I apologize for the 20 questions but I'm genuinely confused.

Ask away, there are plenty here and in the other soccer threads that will answer and help.

Offside is probably the hardest one to explain and understand, so you aren't alone. Especially when you get into the finer points of it.

What's funny is that I played year-round club soccer until I was twelve and was told to quit by a doctor due to a knee problem. Went to camps, practices, tournaments, all the time. And I paid attention to the rules and stuff.

Despite the above, I realized today I didn't know (or had forgotten) how the rule work when all positional players were in the opponent's half.

I was just discussing it with my 13 year old who has been playing since she was 6.
Wait until you see a keeper get forward and how people lose their minds because he is usually one of the 2 and it confuses when he isn't in the goal.

And don't worry, I had to explain to an AYSO ref how offside work when he explained it incorrectly to a parent AR.

I'm a huge soccer fan every four years ( ), for the World Cup, and to a lesser extent follow the Olympic matches and the Seattle FC. This has been the most excited I remember being for a World Cup, and not just for the US. These matches have been fire! I've been enjoying the hell out of this and wanted to thank the knowledgeable (and the not-so-knowledgeable) people in this thread for explaining everything so well and so patiently. I've been so into it this year that I found myself explaining to the other person who inhabits my house why a nil-nil draw was, in fact, very exciting! And I got to celebrate (via text) with my Moroccan-born paralegal over their win today.

In the PST time zone, I've loved getting up for early-morning matches and then watching through the day (don't tell work). Feeling very sad not to have anything to watch for a couple of days! See you on Friday.

I meant 7/8 that finished top of their group advanced past the round of 16. Croatia was the only #2 that won.

Gotcha - with Morocco and Croatia advancing it maybe takes a little sting out of Belgium not advancing and Canada getting zero points. Seems like, in hindsight, that maybe that group was the hardest.

I suggest adding the Euros to your list in 2024. Other than the US not being involved, I find it as enjoyable as the world cup. High quality of competition but you can still see crazy upsets like England beating Germany.

Maybe a little better, but this is the Swiss, you can count on them to be 2 or 3 in a group depending on the draw, but no further than the round of 16...

So Switzerland is basically the Mexico of Europe?

I know there have been times where 7 of the 8 WC quarterfinalists we're from Europe (and IIRC the other was Brazil).

In a lot of way UEFA and CONMEBOL are the chalk (basically if there is a Cinderella it's a mid-pack European side like a Croatia or Bulgaria). And really outside of Uruguay you don't really see anything from South American sides outside the Big 2.

The 16 team Euro was dynamite. Really incredible stuff. I was not as happy with the 24 team format, it lost a little of the luster for me.

In fact, I may even prefer the 16 team Super Copa America to the 24 team Euro.

Yeah. It's funny...the first year I played soccer was 1974 when I was 5 years old. By the time I was 7 my favorite player was Pele. How?

By reading about him in BOOKS!

Rarely was I able to see him on TV, but I would get books about him for birthdays, Christmas, etc. I was nuts about soccer then. And now still, many years later.

Yeah, this is a great contrast in styles. I think Croatia just doesn't have enough as their best players are past their prime - but most of those guys know how to get it done so I don't expect it to be too easy on Brazil.
