*** Official 2024-25 NHL, Playoff talk... Nothing better *** (3 Viewers)

Nothing to do with 4 Nations - lost in the hubbub is that legendary former Penguins broadcaster Mike Lange passed away a few days ago.

Didn’t put it in the RIP thread because I figured most wouldn’t know of him there.

Thats what hockey is all about.

That and handshakes. 😊

Compare this game to the NBA All-Star game...wait you can`t. NBA All-Star game is a clown show where nobody shows any pride or cares. Adam Silver had to be watching this and thinking we need to change something. Problem is NBA players make so much money they really don`t care about the game anymore.

It was a great game that went to OT. Would never happen but a as there were 1-1 would love to see a 7 games series with these 2 teams.

That was a blast. Going forward wonder what the frequency will be. As much as I love it every non-Olympic year might make it less special.
Right. This thing was about 100x better than I anticipated. Riveting stuff, but you can't run this every other year. I think there will be quite a bit of blow back due to the amount of injuries. It was mentioned that at least a few members of each club wouldn't be available for their teams this weekend, but I mean at least a few guys will be out multiple games/weeks here and as there are only about 25 games left in the regular season, losing a guy like McAvoy for the Bruins is going to be massive.
I think once ever 4 years for this would be good. Give NHL a break for Olympics, following year, 3v3 West vs East tournament. Then another 3v3 maybe North America vs World, and then another 4 nations, something like that.
Really can't believe they left McDavid that wide open ffs.
Oh, one other thing that I thought was pretty crazy, but I don't recall much numbers overlap on these players. It seems to me that every player was able to get their regular jersey number, but I didn't delve too much into that.

Agree with all of this.

I think doing 4 (or more) Nations too often is going to saturate the product/significance when you also have the Olympics. Definitely will be some blow back on injuries, especially when two of the best players in the game (M. Tkachuk and McAvoy) are among those affected. And I'm sure teams don't love the fact that even guys who aren't hurt still endured a fair amount of wear and tear that others who weren't there didn't.

Also noticed that uniform thing - probably just a coincidence but did make it easier to identify a lot of players.

After Binnington let some soft goals in during previous games, I questioned him starting tonight. After his performance in OT, wtf do I know.
You were not alone, my friend. He wasn't painting a Monet early, got the job done, but in that OT, he was something else. Really should have been the player of the game. McDavid didnt do much that game until the GWG.

I thought I heard it on Sportsnet that the plan is for this every 2 years, which I think is too much. You can have too much of a good thing, and it will take away from the spectacle. PLus, with the NHL players back in the Olympics we will have that as another "best on best"

Canada’s victory in the 4 nations reminded me of their comeback victory over the Soviet Union in the 1972 Summit Series.
First time professional hockey players were competing against the Soviet National Team.
It was a battle of cultures and national pride.
It was an 8 game series and the Canadians were down 1-2-1. The next 4 games were played in Russia. Down 5-3 after two periods in the last and deciding game the Canadian’s Paul Henderson scored the winning goal with half a minute left in the game.
Henderson became a revered national hero.

I was 7. When the games were in Russia they were daytime here in EST timezone. School had an assembly and we'd all go to the gym to watch the game on the TV(s) there. Crazy to think about it now, a bunch of kids gathered around a 20" TV with horrific picture quality. lol

I remember the goal and the call by the late great Foster Hewitt. That series was an absolute war. The 4-Nations was a pillow fight compared to that.

So true. I was in Western Canada, we also had an assembly where they wheeled the TV in on a cart that was 5-6' high with a top loading VCR underneath it.
We went crazy when Henderson scored. That Hewitt goal call is iconic.

Regarding 1972 being a war, Bobby Clarke suggests the Tkachuk brothers take a look at Valeri Kharlamov's ankle if they want a lesson in intimidation tactics.

Is there a good documentary or program about that? I'm familiar with the Series vaguely but don't know it well.

I've got a DVD set of the series that includes the complete game 8. I've never watched the thing but really should. The politics were almost as crazy as the hockey.

Cool, thanks.

Didn’t realize some of these guys have to turn around and play tomorrow and almost all this weekend. That’s a pretty steep turnaround.

That’s a pretty steep turnaround.
They were playing pretty much similar to a regular NHL schedule. So while they didn't get a mid season break like other players (typical of NBA/MLB all star game situations) it isn't like they played 7 games in 7 days and are now going back to their team and playing the next day.

It was pretty much the same as any other week in the NHL of playing games.

Yes - I'm a homer here, but the Caps are really really good.

They had several stretches in the Edmonton game where it looked like they were on a power play, but it was 5-on-5 hockey. Just moving the puck, creating chances, and dominating the possession time. I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching a hockey team more - and that includes the '18 cup team, that really wasn't that inspiring until the playoffs.

I expected them to beat the Pens - maybe not as badly as they did...but I didn't expect them to manhandle the Oilers in more or less the same way over the weekend.

Caps and Jets are a class ahead of the pack this season.
Which means at least one (if not both) will get knocked out before the Finals - as well have seen year after year, playoffs are a different breed.

I don't disagree with your statement - but I will say that I think both of them are "bred" for playoff hockey here. Arguably the top 2 goalies in the league this year, both are top 5 in goals against and goals for. Good records home and away. These are both balanced teams that can play a physical style when needed, and wear teams down over a 7 game series.

The odds are still against them being the two to face off for the cup, but I feel like those odds may be a little better this year than they typically are - at least as of right now.

Carbery is a heck of a coach. No wonder he was the hot commodity a few years ago.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Rangers receive some stuff
Avs receive Lindgren and Vesey (far and away my least favorite players on this team)
Addition by subtraction baby.

Haven’t been following hockey that closely in recent years and am rarely in this thread, so maybe this has been mentioned already, but I was happy to discover that Jaromir Jagr has 5 goals and 9 assists in the Czech League this season. If he ever retires, I’ll know that I really am old.

Chicago sends Seth Jones and a 4th round pick to Florida for Spencer Knight and a 1st round pick. Blackhawk retain 26% of Jones' salary.
Minnesota sends a 2026 2nd round pick to Nashville for Gustav Nyquist.

Great trade for the Panthers to keep this team near the too this year and next year.

I liked Knight but this was a really good move for the short term.

To me this signals the possibility that Aaron Ekblad is playing his final season here and his money will shift to a potential Sam Bennet extension.

If you have to mention it, you are really old.

I thought you were going to say "If you know who Jaromir Jagr is, you are really old"

I actually thought about saying that.

Trades that had to be done with both guys becoming UFAs and not exactly needle movers - even if the Rangers aren’t totally selling. I’ll miss them because they were among the few guys that actually played hard all the time - especially Lindgren who was an absolute warrior over the years. His size and play style just caught up to him.

It was nice of Karlsson to have a very good game for the Penguins last Thursday against the Flyers. Hopefully teams will ignore his defensive liabilities and back up the truck for him. I'm oddly looking forward to this Penguins rebuild. Dubas has been pretty shrewd at picking up draft capital while at least trying to see if there was a last playoff run in it for this squad.
There isn't and there hasn't been for the last couple of years.

The question now is, will he take that capital and convert it into young, promising players to line up with Crosby (and the artists FKA Malkin and Letang)? Or will he put it all into drafting prospects?
I think the only bad move would be if he continues to try to thread the needle and use some of it on players and some of it on prospects.

Reilly Smith about to be traded next. Good guy to have for the playoffs for a Cup hopeful team.

Really hate this trade for Florida, they got fleeced. Jones has been a bagful of meh for years now. Yeah, maybe some of that is because he's buried on a terrible team, but even so he's on the wrong side of 30 with quite a few years left on an unfavorable contract (so bad that the Hawks have to eat some).
They gave up a first round pick, albeit probably a low one, and a #1 goaltender. Bob's only under contract for another year - and the Panthers have very very little cap space as it is. I dunno.

Thought the same, but I never question what the Panthers do any more, ever since the Tkachuk trade and bringing in Maurice right after they won the President’s Trophy.

If Florida was paying Jones' full contact ($9.5 mill) I would really hate it for them. But, with the amount Chicago is retaining it works out to $7 million. So, not a bad deal for a 2nd pairing Dman.
The Panthers have really been missing Montour, so Jones is his replacement.

So The Panthers IMO got a guy who can absolutely help defend and potentially win another cup now. On this team and system he will play a lot better IMO.

Knight......is good but has issues between the ears. We have another goalie on the farm and remember this name:

Cooper Black
6'8 223 Pounds
He has 2 years of development ahead of him while we have Bob this year and next.

Knight was just over 4MM a year and has an expiring deal. So they are paying 6.5-7MM now for Knight who is unproven as a clear frontline starting goalie. Chicago is paying 2.5MM a year to Florida for the 5 years left on Jones deal.

This also signals the Panthers will move on from Aaron Ekblad if he does not come back for a team friendly 2-2.5MM a year deal.

This also frees up cap space for extending one Sam Bennett.

Shrewd deal IMO knowing what we have on the farm, what we are trying to do in keeping Bennett and knowing if Ekblad wants to retire in Florida he will have to come way down after his contract expires after this season.

The first rounder in negligible knowing it will be a low pick.

Jack Hughes out for the season is a pretty huge loss for the Devils. Been a tough year for the Hughes family.

Bolts made a pretty big splash in going for it now mode. Giving up a few first rounders and getting Bjorkstrand and bringing back Gourde. I think this is a pretty good move, especially as they are one of the hottest teams in the league, but htf they manage this and the salary cap I have no idea. And they are losing a lot of draft capital going forward. Team has a lot of 30 somethings now, so their window may be about to close for a bit.

Brock Nelson is way better than anyone thinks and him in Colorado is scary.
Nelson is a very good player but Avs gave up quite a bit to get him. And the way he plays and his age, it's a bit of a risk. But I think it's a good bet for Avs in going for it this year.

Trade deadline today, Flyers will be the most looked at team. I'm not sure what they are going to do, but they have to sought after assets and Briere is playing hard to get there. For a team in flux, I think he has to make some moves - team is not there this year.

Rangers did bad in the Smith trade (imho) getting back a meh prospect and a 3rd rounder. I thought they'd get at least a 2nd and a better prospect, but I'm not on the phones. I think they did great however in the Soucy trade. They only gave up a 3rd, and basically replaced a crappy Lindgren with a better, and bigger defensemen. Not sure if they are going to do anything else, but they have a pretty good amount of cap space now as well for any further moves and the offseason - so perhaps they have another 2 years in their window.

Speaking of cap space, WTF the Canes doing out there. Trade for Rantanen and now have no way of re-signing him, so they are going to try to trade him again for pennies on the dollar, rather than getting zero on the dollar in the offseason. They had to have figured this out before the trade ffs! Seems the Stars are interested and that would be a great fit, but gotta make the money work.

Love what the Bolts did even if they don’t win the cup. Balls to the wall baby, just go for it while the window is open. They’ll get free agents to sign here anyways down the road.
