***official 2024/25 women’s college bball thread*** paige gets her title and will soon be beat up and abused in the wnba (7 Viewers)

close game here at the end and man has indiana gotten cold they need to learn how to win but they are young and it will come take that to the bank brohans

Hopefully, a win like that can help the Fever keep coming together a little more.

From a team-building/chemistry standpoint, their challenge is unlike any I can recall in sports. But since the 5 day break, they've had 2 nice wins. One with Clark blowing up, and one with Boston blowing up. And heading into this game, it seemed like Boston's confidence had taken quite a hit.

The whole team may be an odd fit, but if they are going to win they need their 2 young stars on the same page and confident.

I've only seen the highlights, but Angel Reese put her best game so far last night. 20-10 (4th straight double-double), going 8 for 10.

It was all right around the basket, but she looked like she's starting to get more comfortable.
I actually watched some of this as well as the highlights. To me it looked like a scrimmage and terrible defense.....like no defense at all. Just too easy all around the basket and almost looked like practice where the defender was just there to give the passer and post player a visual but not playing defense. I was really underwhelmed.

I guess it could be that Reese is so good she make everyone else look terrible. Like she is a high schooler playing against a kindergartner but she didn't really look like she was doing anything special.

The Sun have the highest team defensive rating in the league, and have only lost one game.

I don't remember all of Angel's FG's in that game, but I remember them being pretty typical Angel baskets. Putbacks on rebounds and transition points. It's usually all hustle points. She doesn't have a very refined offensive game yet. It's why she fell to #7 in the draft despite her college success and popularity.

The point is, she's probably not a huge focal point/priority for opposing defense just yet. Until she develops more offensively, she's a "you're open for a reason" sort of player.
And I think a lot of her points in that game came with Chennedy Carter on the court. Carter's speed can really throw a defense out of whack.

And as you guys plan out your Father's Day weekend, a couple scheduling notes you want to take into account.

Saturday, 3:00 on ABC. Liberty-Aces. Championship Rematch! (Sun-Wings at 1:00 on CBS too)

Sunday. High Noon. Sky-Fever II in Indy on CBS. Get your popcorn ready. (Storm-Mercury at 3 on ABC, of course).

Man, what a performance by the Liberty.

Still so weird to see A'ja and the Aces lose, but the talent on the Liberty is unreal. Sometimes Jonquel is sort of an afterthought on this team with Stewie and Sabrina, but 6'6" dropping 4 of 5 from 3? Former MVP, can run the floor. If she's doing this, I don't know how you stop them.

But if anybody can, it's the Aces. They are so uncannily like Duncan's Spurs (no surprise the Hammon is a Pop protege).

Lebron, Dame and Bam all sitting courtside for this one. Good for them trying to get a little publicity being associated with the best basketball league in the land. They keep doing stuff like that and maybe the WNBA's little brother league might finally catch on.

BTW, speaking of the Olympics, the WNBA does an interesting All-Star format in Olympic years.

So, the All-Star game is Team USA vs. Team WNBA. It's literally all the snubs against the Olympic team right before they leave for Paris. Last time they did this, the snubs won.

So, go cast your vote now!

I went Arike, Diggins-Smith, Caitlin, and McBride in the back court.
Nneka, Hamby, DeWanna Bonner, Jonquel, Ezi, and Alanna Smith in the front court.

I could see this All-Star game getting really good ratings. And absolutely, the snubs can win.

Curious to see if Spoon makes any changes to the starting lineup today. They basically start every game by spotting the opponent 15 points then the bench getting them back in it, so she's gotta do something.

Starting Lindsay Allen would make a lot of sense. The team is just better with her on the floor. Certainly there's a case for Chennedy too, but she's pretty much perfect as a 6th man.

What a fantastic game. Just got caught up because I did something I haven't done in 10 years (went out to lunch).

Watching these young teams try to find their way has been so much fun. Whatever the media is trying to stir up, we're talking about mostly 20-something young women. For us old farts, that's known as a kid. Every game has a winner and loser, you just can't help but root for all of them the find their way.

Chicago-Indiana is certainly not disappointing as young rivalry.

For Indiana, it's so fun to watch them start to get on the same page. And frankly, just enjoy the game. It didn't seem like they were having much fun in those first 11 games. For a while, I was really worried all this scrutiny might just break them, but they seem to be handling it well now. Gotta love Clark and Boston getting on the same page. Kelsey and Samuelson getting buckets. Nalyssa fighting her *** off. When they are on the same page, they move the ball well and it's pretty basketball.

And you gotta love Kelsey Mitchell getting a W today. It's her first Father's Day without her father.

Chicago, as always, is such a weird fascinating team. I love Spoon, and I couldn't imagine a coach I'd rather play for. But man, the offense is absolutely dreadful. Just no actions, little ball movement, spacing is terrible most of the time.

The offense is mostly built on offensive rebounds. Outside of that, it's asking Chennedy to take it to the rack or Mabrey to chuck up a shot at the end of the shot clock. It's a total mess.

But you just can't help but love them. They play their asses off.

Anyway, what a great game. The 5 of us that watched it had a great time.

Speaking of young rebuilding teams. There are basically 4 of them right now. Sky, Fever, Sparks, and Mystics. Well, Wings and Dream sort of are, but they are mostly stuck in the middle either due to injury (WIngs) or organizational ineptitude (Dream).

But while it's clear to see the long-term upside of the Fever, Sky, and Sparks, if the once 0-12 Mystics are a stock, I'm buying. They are down their 2 best vets, in Sykes and Austin. And while the Sparks and Sky have the more heralded "double rookie" class, Alliyah Edwards and Julie Vanloo are pretty awesome. Edwards is getting it together, and it wouldn't be a shock to see her be the best of this loaded rookie class. Vanloo is technically a rookie, but she's 31. She's just a PG that gets it. PG takes the longest to develop in this league. They got a solid vet PG for free.

They also have another PG, Melbourne, who is solid and still the youngest player in the league, even in her 2nd season.

Along with all the young talent, they've got a bunch of draft capital. They have Atlanta's first round pick. So, they have a good chance to get Paige Buckets plus another top 5 pick.

Mercury looking like the most dangerous 6-7 team you could imagine. It's been a couple years of injury and other stuff, but Griner now looks unstoppable.

I'm not sure sure my beloved Storm have an answer for this one.

Reese with a dirty shot to the head on Clark.

INB4 the delusional say it was clean and that she was just going for the ball.

I’m not even mad at her opponents anymore. It’s all bush league, but the real issue is that her teammates just keep letting it happen. If I were the GM, I’d make it very clear that teammates that don’t stick up for each other won’t last much longer on the team. With such short rosters, could be quickly out of the league if they get cut after the season.

I don’t know if it’s true or not, but there was talk on Reddit that some of her teammates have been seen smirking and laughing after some of the hard hits. And that some of Clark’s teammates are dating the players that have been fouling her especially hard? Reddit’s not always the most accurate source, but if true, that’s horrible.

There's really no point in defending this anymore. People don't want to watch women's basketball. That's fine. That's the way it's been for the last 27 years.

Caitlin got into a little tussle today and her teammates came in quick and had her back.

All the stuff tearing down the league is from people that do not watch it and do not care about it. I'm not going to speculate on why that is. That's outside of this thread's pervue.

@GroveDiesel her teammates had her back in this game, and it was beautiful. If you don't want to watch and see for yourself, that's fine.

The media done got this, so it's probabaly all moot. But they are trying to take down a league of 20-something year old girls. Nobody watches, so they can make up whatever they want. None of it is true, but it really doesn't matter.

The media has hooked the public. God forbid anybody actually ask these women what they think.

No, actually players haven’t been targeted like this before and this wasn’t “a little tussle.” It was a flagrant 1 foul called on someone who has shown repeatedly that she has an ax to grind.

And no, her teammates didn’t have her back. I watched it. They came over to her, but they didn’t get in Reese’s face, they didn’t put her on the deck in retaliation, they didn’t make it clear that it can’t keep happening.

It’s great that you like the slogging aggressive style of basketball that has come to dominate the WNBA, but you are quite clearly the minority. Virtually nobody cared about the WNBA before this year and the fact that there was zero discussion about it here before now is pretty good evidence of just how much anyone cared before now, including you. You don’t get to dictate how everyone else wants to see the game played.

The tussle I was talking about was earlier in the game when she got tied up with Dana Evans.

Reese whining about the whistle in the presser is next level schtick.

Clark took the high road FWIW.
That told us everything we needed to know about both.

Reese gooning it up in the game and then crying about calls.

Clark shaking off the cheap shot and taking the high road in the post-game presser.

And some will still act mystified as to why people think Reese is a villian.

Watching the game, the Fever really do seem to be starting to build more chemistry. That's the big story. At least it should be.

I wouldn't judge her teammates too harshly based on that one foul.

Watching it live (not in slow mo on cable news), I don't think it was apparent to many/most that Reese hit her on the head.

It was an obvious foul. Both teams getting ready for Caitlin shoot from free throws.

And then one of the refs tapped their head, indicating that he thought there might have been some head contact.

It was obvious in the replay, but it happened so fast that, in the moment, only one ref even saw it.

And of course, I can't say what Angel's intentions were. It was very different than the Chennedy foul. That was just a cheap shot that had nothing to do with basketball. Whether Angel meant to hit her on the head or not, it was very much in the flow of the game trying to make a play.

I know it's going to sound weird given that that 3 seconds is all most people know about that 40 minute game. But during the game it didn't seem like that big of a deal.

It was a hard foul in the middle of an outstanding game.

Looked to me to be a frustration foul, more than anything, Clark had her beat , and Reese just seemed determined not to let Clark get an easy bucket. Sort of Ironic, because the shot was getting blocked...

reese got the cheap foul and i guess some street cred with the other jealous haters but clarke got the w take that to the bank brohans

I was just wondering if Indiana should go after Dawn Staley as a coach - and then realized Indiana could not afford her - which says something about the amount of money in college sports...

She's my villain.

It'll be interesting to see how many of these rookies make the All-Star team. Reminder, the All-Star game will be the Olympic team vs. "Team WNBA" (those voted in among the non-Olympians)
Obviously, Clark will be in.

For the rest of the rookies, it gets really tricky because the frontcourt is loaded. Backcourt seems like it will be Arike, Skyler Diggins-Smith, Clark, and than either McBride or Rhyne Howard.

For the front court, Nneka, Bonner, Hamby, and Jonquel, IMO, have to be there. I'd even say Ezi too.
That leaves 2 spots. 1 if Ezi gets in.

Reese, Brink, Aaliyah Edwards, and Rickea are all making a good case. Cardoso coming into her own too, and should keep getting better by the AS Game.

So, for those 1 or 2 spots, you've got the 5 rookies plus Aaliyah Boston, Tina Charles, and Alanna Smith (great story. Almost quit the WNBA 2 years ago because she couldn't get minutes, now she's a big time player for the might Lynx. shot blocker hitting almost 45% from 3). A lot of others too.
