*** Official 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** Post Helene and Milton (1 Viewer)

Storm currently forming, but expected to make a turn northeast into the Atlantic and not be much impact to mainland areas.

System in the western Gulf that the forecast for has worsened today. More likelihood of strengthening. Texas and Louisiana coasts impacted, but likely tropical depression or low end tropical storm strength. Expected to come ashore late Wednesday into Thursday.

Seems like the last thing Texas needs is more sustained rainfall

Yes, felt like we've had rain most every day for over a week with the system that still hasn't cleared out. The new one is going to partially merge with it apparently.

Storm encountered dry air so didn't strengthen as much as expected today. Supposed to be dealing with wind shear tomorrow but likely to still hit category 1 by the time it gets to shore. Track has moved to the east throughout the day.

Something with the potential to form in the western Caribbean with possible US Gulf coast impact around the end of next week.

They are struggling to forecast it though, unsure on how much it will strengthen, and the steering mechanisms aren't clear yet. Could hit eastern Gulf, western Gulf, or just stay south and go into Mexico. Something to keep an eye out for going into next week though.

The potential storm is more likely to head into the central / eastern part of the Gulf, though still a very wide range of forecasts on path, timing, strengthening, etc. Florida and the eastern Gulf could be something something come the end of the week though. Keep your eyes out.

Keeping an eyeball on this one as my son is in school at FSU in Tallahassee.

Eh, who am I kidding, I always keep an eye on these storms regardless of where they are headed.

Tropical Tidbits video coming up this morning from Dr. Cohen....

Would just wait for the Levi video, but the NHC has been cautious here even designating this thing. They just gave it PTC status so it can get 24hr monitoring, but that's not really much of a status.

what is brewing in the gulf now? Helene? Im in West Palm for biz this week and then heading to Orlando Friday afternoon and flying out Saturday afternoon. Whats the likelihood I'm fighting against this thing?

Whatever Helene is, it'll be well over the upper midwest by the afternoon on Saturday. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT09/AL092024_5day_cone_no_line_and_wind.png

Guessing that even Delta, which will like be impacted in a big way as this travels around and over the ATL, causing delays and cancellations, will be generally back on track by mid-day Saturday. Now, the likelihood of MCO being a pain to travel out of anyway, IMO, is 110%. Even with TSA Pre-Check it can be a mess getting through security. If you have TSA PRE, consider doing a trial of CLEAR.

Nhc now doing the YouTube thing

I bought my son an airline ticket to fly home tomorrow night. His classes are virtual anyway so I figured he would prefer to have a full refrigerator, electricity and AC and an empty house in Miami as my wife and I are flying out Thursday evening to go to a concert.

Schools closed in Tampa on Wed and Thurs.
Florida A&M decided to close the campus TODAY! No classes today, they shut it down
This storm is down South of Cuba

Talk about being overly safe or just flat out taking advantage of a potential storm to have a vacation
All these schools once they shut down are staying that way until next Monday
Just stay home for the rest of the semester
:lmao:

I can remember in the 90s when companies in Florida would force people into work unless the storm was actually going to hit that day
There was no "Big storm" coming so go home and get your family prepared for a storm that might not even hit here in 3-4 days
They would never shut the company down for a week

We're closing Thursday in my Hillsborough location. Still holding out hope to conduct business in Polk. The mentality now is the company doesn't care about the safety of the employees if you wait to issue a closure notice.

I have a laundry list of things that bother me when a Hurricane is announced or warnings are issued, especially in South Florida

1. I think one of the worst things people can do is evacuate or leave the safety of their homes. There are some very good reasons to evacuate if you live out on a barrier island in its path or perhaps right ON the Coast, but people way overreact and start packing up, Florida especially I'm always shocked to see 95 and TPike backed up with people trying to head North, many times they just put themselves back directly in the path...sometimes the center of the storm seems to be less problematic than these feeder bands 50-100 miles out from the center of the storm

Watching these people sitting in 5-6 hours of thick heavy stacked traffic that's not moving, just stay home and bunker down, it's ridiculous
And the news/weather stations have a lot to do with this, they send people into a panic and like to show empty grocery store shelves from previous storms even if the shelves aren't empty at the moment, they play on peoples fears and folks that do exactly what that TV tells them to do

2. People that show up at shelters empty handed...give me a break Wasn't a single can of food you could pack or a bottle of water to sip on....water, that leads to my next gripe

3. People who never drink a bottle of water for months/years on end, what do they drink? SODAS/Sugar/More Sodas/More Sugar of all kinds but suddenly these folks need cases and cases of water when the storm is announced. Why do most of these folks look like they need to star in the next Richard Simmons "Sweating to the Oldies" workout, you know what I mean. These people turn their nose up when offered water usually but suddenly they need cases of it to stockpile in their garage and never open and will eventually go out of date and unused. But they gotta go clear the shelves out at the grocery stores and elsewhere...drink that plastic baby

Miami/South Florida doesn't usually take the brunt of most of these storms with some exceptions like 2005 I believe it was, several came across from the South and ripped thru places like Broward County, the Fort Myers Beach one last year or year before, that beach coastline will never be the same. Andrew in '92 but mostly South Florida misses them, many hit more on the Panhandle and Gulf side since there is nowhere for the storm to go, it must make landfall, and that's why I encourage people around here to stay put and not evacuate unless absolutely necessary, you'll quickly wish you were home when you are 500 miles North and still in the path of that storm

4. People who show up at shelters empty handed, you know you are going to need supplies.

5. Media talking about things that will never happen, they love to throw around the term catastrophic to get people glued to their TV set. And trying to encourage people to buy things they will never use. You need a cooler, some beer and water and a lot of snacks or whatever food you can enjoy and go without electricity for a few days. Also a good time to check how much weed you have on hand, you're going to want to be high for the Hurricane Party/Watch

6. People who show up at shelters empty handed with small children in tow...you didn't think to pack any diapers or baby food on the way to the shelter at the school?

7. People who don't live in Florida or somewhere that gets frequent Hurricane Warnings like Kansas that have an opinion on things based on the Weather Channel

8. Wanna take a guess?

-This is a prime example from Dade County, lot of people in line with clothes like they are checking in to a Vegas hotel for a few days, no Publix bags of food or water trying to carry it in with them, oh no they just show up and expect the world to take care of them

If I were in charge I would make sure that folks know they are likely to be turned away if they don't bring their own supplies or at least some of the supplies they see listed on the TV that people are encouraged to buy.

This was from 7 years ago during Irma and I think this one might have reached speeds of something like 185 mph winds at one point over some open warm waters and IIRC it never hit Miami

So now only on the Yucatan tomorrow afternoon?

The center now expected to be west of Tampa around mid-afternoon on Thursday, and landfall occurring Thursday night south of Tallahassee.

A larger storm than normal in terms of its spatial coverage. Tropical storm force winds will extend further to the east of the center of circulation than normal due to the storm’s large wind field and southwesterly wind shear, and this could cause wind impacts over much of west, central and northern Florida.

Storm surge up to 15 ft. is currently forecast for parts of the Florida Big Bend region. Significant surge will also impact the Tampa Bay area, and could be higher if the storm were to make landfall further south down the coast, though most models have been avoiding this.

There is a significant risk of flooding/flash flooding over parts of Florida, Georgia and the western Carolinas/southern Appalachians Thursday and Friday due to a combination of the storm and the approaching front/trough of low pressure.

Yea I’m not too worried about flooding…in Tampa. It’s a bit crazy now in St Pete with flooding though…seems so much more vulnerable than ever before.

I was talking to my son earlier today and thought it was interesting that he was really pushing to stay in Tallahassee (or at least get back on Monday). I bought two airline tickets, one for today and one for tomorrow. We ended up canceling today's ticket (I'll get credit), and we'll see what happens tomorrow. I also bought him a return flight for Tuesday morning because Monday was $600 one way!

It turns out he would prefer to stay in Tally or evacuate to Gainesville, aka the University of Florida, with his friends so he could ensure he would be back in Tallahassee on Monday for a sorority date function he was invited to go to.....the truth comes out!!!

The partying during these storms is second to none.

I've told the story here before...but during a 'Cane in the late 90's that rolled thru Tuscaloosa and caused a school shutdown, but was not so serious that everyone evacuated....Hank Jr rolled into town and played a surprise show at a popular local bar (Galette's). Memory of a lifetime for those kids who stayed.

I have no doubt that the computer models are correct and it will mostly follow the track they have
I agree that there isn't any reason that colleges and businesses need to be shutting down when a TS at the moment is at bet on the Yucatan tomorrow but...
Those that liv up in the Panhandle of FL or that arm pit or bend -"Perry" around where quite frankly it's just not densely populated the way Tampa Bay is
All lives matter so I'm not making light of it but it sure seems like most of the Hurricanes that strike Florida tend to be these ones that end up in the Gulf and have nowhere to go but North
Eventually these Hurricanes run out of warm water and have to make landfall
