And....that's exactly the point I'm trying to make here.  That footage, which maybe drones or webcams could provide, is far more compelling.  And in being compelling, we learn, and thus gain information about how quickly things change.  Of course we could read our science books and we would know all this, but the footage tells a story that resonates.
Are we talking about the footage from their car, while they hid out upstairs? That was compelling. And their presence obviously not needed. The footage of them yucking it up looking for disaster, not so much.

Where would I find info on residents trying to get back into Mexico Beach. My sister in law says she heard from a friend of a friend who is a cop that all the roads in are closed but how does she verify this? Google is not helping.

In Atlanta, lots of rain but wind is minimal. Praying for the folks caught in the crossfire. I’m going to sail one off in my hotel room and send good thoughts to those in this monster’s path.

Gotta disagree on this one.  What they are trying to do is no different than an astronaut heading into space or a submariner going very deep in the ocean.  Maybe not as refined, or supported by "science" but they provide valuable footage, and thus information.  Just like you do in a lab.  And while we have known for decades when/where hurricanes are going to hit I'm not sure that I have watched more compelling footage.

Astronauts have died.  Submariners have died.  Mountaineers.  Explorers.  Race car drivers.  None of those people had to do what they were doing.  So perhaps a storm chaser ends up dying.  While its preventable, I sure wouldn't say its not for a good cause.
Sorry but "oh there goes some plywood....there goes some insulation" is not helping unravel the secrets of the universe. Its just a couple of hicks driving around in a storm for the prospect of money.

Tend to agree.  It's entertainment. Disaster porn, whatever you want to call it.

During Florence, I found google maps to be more accurate in the early days of the road closures.  If a certain amount of people click on the road as closed, it updates your map/route.

Mexico Beach police department facebook page has info on attempts to clear road coming back in from Wewahitchka.

Unfortunately it also has posts where people are searching for family members who stayed. Some in trailer parks.

The Good news: My work shut down today

The Bad news: We're in a Flash Flood Warning and it's raining like hell. Also, tornadoes are a worry.

Similarly, I used WAZE to get in to FL to work Irma last year and plan to do the same as soon as I can leave Birmingham for somewhere around PCB.  A group of us left at the same time last year and WAZE saved me around 2-hours as it zig-zagged me across the state.  The App can also help find gas stations that have fuel as I recall.

The storm may not have made it quite to Cat 5, but these yahoos reached Cat 5 on the idiocracy scale.
I get more and more frustrated about this clown.  He will end up profiting large for this stupid move, he states he will bill the news shows that air his video.  I hope the people who own the house he broke into bill him.  Plus he claims on his facebook that he did a brief documentary form inside the house that I am sure he will sell.

https://fl511.com/ or call 511 in Florida, I believe.  The online map probably won't be updated until later today.

Edit:  I've been checking, and it looks like this is still useless right now.  Sorry.  I'll try to post and let you know when I hear it's working and useful again.

He's no Jeff. That's for sure.

Still think all things considered the landing site of this hurricane was absolutely perfect from a damage minimization angle.

Whoah, crazy find - use Apple Maps to get directions.  If you zoom in, it shows road closures better than any site on the net right now. "Directions are not available at this time because of current road conditions."

Thanks.  One of my SIL's neighbors who stayed got in contact with her and said that their houses only took water up to the windows (good news I guess) and that the houses there are still up.  Also one of them has already shot at a looter.

98, 319, 386, 30 all closed.  I can't tell if "Bear Swamp" is closed, but I also can't see how to get to it without using one of the big highways.

A top 5 most powerful hurricane in US history (at landfall, I’m pretty certain it’s top 5) will not make top 5 in damage...that’s “lucky” for lack of better description

My in-laws live just above Panama City in Lynn haven. They had some roof damage and water came in. I offered for them to come stay with us a little while to get out of the area. Of course they don’t want to do that. But I gave a friend who offered them a vacant house in our town that they are selling. They are thinking about it.

I'm not a gun guy, but people who try to benefit and steal from this kind of thing- lowest of the low and deserve the worst that comes.

So far only two fatalities?

Really hope it stays there...seeing that aerial footage makes me nervous though.

Eta... I say "only" based on the size of that thing, but still terrible.

Hugo flashback for me.  That first time you see how widespread and intense the damage is around you, is numbing.

As with all big storms, the people in that area will forever refer to things as they were pre or post Michael.

Landmarks that have always been, will be gone.  Twenty years from now there will be an entire generation that will have never seen [fill in the blank landmark], or even know it existed.

That's just insane.  It's hard to know if it was as bad as Andrew or not, but it was close.

The pressure was similar, if not lower.  The wind speeds seemed a bit lower than Andrew, though Michael was bigger.  Of course the impact of the bigger size was lessened by the fact that aside from Mexico Beach, it was an extremely populated area.

There are a number of standing homes still, but post-Andrew building codes are likely responsible for that.  I'd bet anything that was built before 1992 was completely wiped out.

Very, very fortunate that the dangerous side of the hurricane didn't hit a massively populated area.  That being said, that does seem like a low number of fatalities.

It's a little impressive how many buildings actually survived that.

Eta... I'm backtracking here after looking at aerial footage again... Horrible. I guess I was trying to say I'm impressed anything survived that...

Death toll rising to 11 and expected to climb.  They can't even get to some areas yet to search the rubble.
I think I heard 280-some folks decided against evacuating Mexico Beach. Some of them have been accounted for, but many have not.

I've read nothing about the trailer home communities inland.

It sounds like the vast majority of the fatalities were inland.

The stats on people deciding not to leave are usually fake news.  You get one sherriff that knows nothing, and gets quoted by some middle of nowhere paper and it goes national.  This has been the same story on lots of landfalls. Yes, some people stick around, but nowhere near the fear factor numbers you see in the press.

If you watch the interviews of the people there the late leavers for the most part had the same story.  They woke up and saw it was bad and went 40 miles east or west depending on where they were in relation to PC.

dammit.

I'd think anybody that tried to ride it out in one of those few houses that didn't survive, didn't survive.

eta: hoping it's culdeus' version of the news

The fact that this storm's intensity crept up on many people was a fact too.  My SILs neighbors who all stayed said that they had stayed through Cat 2 or 3 storms before no problem and that's why they decided to stay.

Michael just came thru. Huge gusts. Power out. Taking on water again
The rain poured down, but those 70 mph winds caused a lot of damage. It really smacked our county (Guilford). Most people don't have power. School is closed for the second day due to power outages, and trees and power lines down. We got more damage from Michael than Florence.

I imagine so.  We only got up to 50 and were on the west edge of the eye wall.  Numerous trees down.

Finally have a roofer coming out today.  Hopefully I can get my townhouse waterproof and begin dealing with the interior damage.

Sharing as an FYI as the Weather Channel is highlighting the limited fuel available in the PCB area.  Lots of fuel availability in Ft. Walton Beach from what I have seen.  There is no chance of getting to and staying in PCB until early next week.  IF we can get a mobile facility up in running, I located to Ft. Walton Beach to commute in and out each day.  Driving down, just about every other small town gas station was out of gas, but every station I have passed in Ft. Walton appears to have gas and there are little to no lines (it was reported yesterday that as much as 35% of stations from Mobile to Pensacola were out of gas).

I didn't even know this thing was coming. I'm out near the airport and have been without power 30+ hours.
