Yeah I think he's okay assuming he didn't take up the full five minutes. I know if I were playing in his group and my opinion was asked for I'd have said he's fine playing the original.
I had a similarly odd situation in a pretty big club tournament. I hooked a ball way left and it appeared to have gone over a wall into a street out of bounds. There's some trees there so it wasn't entirely obvious For the heck of it I meekly declare provisional and hit a second ball off the tee. As we headed up the fairway much to everybody's surprise we see my first ball sitting right in the middle of the fairway, probably 20 yards or so closer to the tee box than where we lost sight of it. It's got a scuff on it but it's clearly my first ball and nobody saw somebody on the other side of the wall throw it back over or anything like that. Admittedly we were all a bit skeptical but after we talked it through we all agreed I could play it since I had declared provisional and, while everybody was like 90% certain my ball went over the wall, nobody was 100% certain and nobody could say that the ball got into the fairway by some means not allowed (i.e. some random person on other side of OB throwing it back over or something). Felt a twinge of guilt since that was hugely lucky and admittedly wasn't entirely certain the rules didn't call for me to do something else.

I'll bet it was small tines and light sanding. Some verticut instead of punch the small tines, but I know a lot of supers like to sand periodically through the summer for a healthier root zone. And some do the small tines a few times a summer, especially those with heavy play/impacted greens. Their big punch is definitely going to be later.

Definitely no guilt. It was your ball and nobody saw anybody move it. We all get lucky bounces. Happens all the time.

handicap posting question....
as mentioned above i played in an eclectic tournament (play day 1 and day 2 you can improve your score on each hole)
i shot 86 on the first day and improved by 7 strokes over 4 holes on day 2...so my 2 day gross was 79...
as instructed by the head pro if you couldn't improve just pick up....so that is how the group played...i put my very first ball of the day ob...well i had a 4 from d1, no worries...
when we picked up we just recorded the score from d1 for d2...instead of 7x or whatever...
so today i receive an email from our newly established handicap review committee that says i need to post a 79 from d2....and specifically states that
[SIZE=16pt]"even though you probably picked up several times, you must post a score that you would have had if you played each hole"[/SIZE]
why would i record a 79?
typically during a round if i pick up i will take a 7 on the hole under the equitable stroke control rule 4-3....in reading today there could be interpretation that i should use the hole not played rule 4-2...
in both cases in order to post a score i would have to get with my playing partner and review the holes and recalculate a score...
it never occurred to me that i would need to post if i am running around picking my ball up 3/4ths of the round...
and i certainly don't think posting a score i have never even sniffed in a round is right either...

You're not talking about a GHIN handicap, right? If so, f that. If it's just a local thing and everybody is doing it, no big deal. But that doesn't belong in your GHIN scores.
Just call the shop and ask the pro to explain. I wouldn't bother with a committee which is surely a bunch of old dudes with nothing better to do getting uppity about nonsense.

my swing is turning to ####. starting miss-hitting shots, with all the clubs, a couple of two weeks ago. and random misses, nothing consistent, so hard to identify a single issue. i thought i had it fixed by focusing on swinging about 80% (max) with each club and trying to keep my elbows close together, which worked for a the last nine holes i played. fast-forward to Monday this week:
Driver? going low/left on one hole, huge block/push/fade on the next. topping driver too...like literally a ball mark 4" in front of the tee as it squirts off 25 yards to the left.
FW/Hybrids? topping the 5w on one swing, pull-hooking it 90 yards left (no embellishment) on the next. spraying 4w right or getting so far under the ball i've put scuff-marks on the top of the club now (grrrrrrrrrrr).
Irons? everything high off the face, out towards the toe. distance off 10-15 yards per club, and all shots finishing weak right. tried 3/4 swings, 1/2 swings, nothing works. feels like i'm just slapping at the ball.
so last night i'm out on the back porch grilling, about four whiskies deep, and i start taking practice swings looking at my reflection in the glass of the back door trying to see what the hell i'm doing so wrong. low-and-####ing-behold: while trying to keep my elbows close together, i've got my RH arm and shoulder completely out in front of the LH side, which in turn has got my RH shoulder above the LH, and my alignment completely screwed up. i tuck my RH elbow closer to my body, getting it inside/behind the LH side, and sure enough it looks somewhat normal. i can only imagine what the guy i played with on Monday was thinking when he saw me swing.

bit the bullet this AM and went to a Driver Clinic at the local course. this is the first official "lesson" i've had in probably 30 years. eight people showed up, all seniors except me, and the Pro goes over a few basics (grip, stance, alignment) and then busts out the Trackman. i'd never been on one before so was pretty anxious when my turn came up. first swing: topped one, with a divot about 4" in front of my tee. Pro says, "Yeah, that's not good." second swing: better contact and a big sweeping slice about 60' yards right. Pro, "Ok, we can work with that. Let's look at the numbers."
going to the Trackman, my Attack Angle is -9.6* and my clubface is open -.6.6*. and i wonder why i'm missing so bad. basically i'm coming in super steep with an open clubface and trying to fix everything with timing when it get to the ball. Pro gives me two tips: on my backswing, my thumbs were pointing almost straight up (steep negative angle), so she tells me to get them pointing almost dead right (flatter plane) and to swing out/up at contact. i work this drill for a few minutes and then tee one up. boom - dead straight, right at my target. next one, same result. hit another 20-25 balls with similar results, and few bad one thrown in. i'm now back to a straight ball/baby fade that is missing my target by maybe 15-20 yards either side.
get back on the Trackman for one final swing and hit one square in the center of the clubface, with a carry of 200 yds and a rollout of 225 (limited flight range balls). stats are much better: Attack Angle -2.6* and clubface open -2.4*. still a lot to work on, but at least i've got and idea of where to begin.
**eta - swing speed is consistent at 95-96 mph. about average for an LPGA Tour player according to the Pro**

Shot an 86 today, my personal best. Drove the green on a par 4 (cart path enabled) was one of those days where everything was going great except putting.
Was hung over as well which I haven't dealt with in awhile, that may be the trick. Sorry liver.
Work is about to get crazy so won't get out much, if any, for about a month. Lame.

Actually you would use rule 4-1. You are supposed to estimate to the best of your ability what you would have received if you had finished out the hole. Not exceeding your ESC score of course.
It could be tough to do if you picked up on a bunch of holes, but that's how it's supposed to work.

4-1 and it's decisions deal specifically with alterations to equipment. Nothing about picking up and just filling in your score using your imagination.

I need to really work on my mental game. 8 of us played Saturday before our draft. I hit it GREAT on the range. Didn't overdo it. And I drove the ball phenomenally well (I had been a bit loose lately). It was all good until I got a wedge in my hands. Pin high left in the bunker. Every time. Got some horrific lies. And though I had been very good out of bunkers the last 2 months I was brutal. Hit too far behind it, bounce skidded and I skulled it over the green like 4 times. Concentration was poor all day. Didn't get up and down much. Putted so-so. Just wasn't there mentally. I was hosting/cooking for the draft party and was thinking about picks, but still....And I recognized that when I'm really good during warm up I seem to let up, get too confident, lose a little edge and don't score well.
Back to the drawing board this week...

on the plus: i putted, and have been putting, lights. #######. out. for a month. 30 putts today, and an up-and-down from 55 yards on #18, with and 10' footer for par. happy with how i grind(ed) [is that a word?] for a par after a #### drive.

Afyer my all time best round two weeks ago I shoot a 96. Step backwards. This #### is hard. Tougher course with trees that were unkind and I sucked pretty bad of the tee but hit good irons most of the day so there's that.
After waiting a ton all round (group in front of us was really slow) and not hitting a solid drive all day I hit one probably 250-275ish in the air dead straight that bounced past the guy in front of us. Felt like an ### on my best drive of the day which sucked.

For Black Friday, I saw an ad for Callaway Great Big Bertha for $200+ tax. Went in and I need a Stiff Flex shaft but they didn't have one. They had a Stiff Flex on a Big Bertha Alpha 816. Hit it and it felt good. I walked out of the store with it for $200+ tax. Normal price was about $400. Should I be happy with it?

Its a very, very good driver. Callaway is coming out with a new driver soon (the EPIC) that is from early reviews likely to be a very strong offering, so they are discounting the slightly older GBB driver, but as long as the shaft feels good for you that's an outstanding performing driver.

I have been around a 15 handicap forever and always used Pro-Vs. Bought 2 dozen Callaway's for 29.99 at Costco before the season, used them all season and finished the year a 13.5 Shaved a stroke and 1/2 off with cheap balls!

Do you guys all play the same balls? I generally use Pro Vs for tournaments at parkland style courses and cheaper stuff (Bridgestone B330, Srixon Trispeed, TM Lethals) for the less meaningful desert courses or courses with lots of OB. I'll even play multiple balls during a round -- usually a Pro V1 for par threes and Pro V1x or Chrome Softs on the 4s and 5s.
I also just got a box of the Callaway Chrome Soft Truvis balls (soccer balls) and really like chipping and putting with them.

Thought this would be the year I really got serious and became an actual golfer. Was heading in that direction but then somehow had the worst 9 holes of my life in early July. I was angry about some other stuff at the time and a bad day on the course just pushed me over the edge. Basically didn't play for 3 months until I eventually decided to get back on the horse.
My goal for the year was to break 100 (sat in the 105 range for the few months that I played at the end of 2015). Got close but didn't get there this year, but I can feel myself making progress. I'm actually hitting a driver now (was going 5 wood off the tee last year) learned how to hit a 3 hybrid pretty consistently and really improved my chipping technique (used to skull most of them). My chipping still isn't very accurate (I'm leaving myself long putts) but I'm getting them up in the air and on the green. Just need more practice.
Replaced my 14 year old irons (used on and off during my various attempts at golfing since my freshman year of college) with a new set a few weeks ago, so I look forward to hitting the ground running in the spring. Right now my biggest weakness is probably approach shots from 90-130 yards. I just don't have any confidence (even though I practice those shots a lot on the range) and always hit them thin. So frustrating.

take a lesson. seriously.
tell the pro exactly what you wrote here, and let him/her give you some ideas on how to fix chipping and approach shots (essentially a full wedge). you'll be under 100 before you know it. good luck.

Maybe? Could be mental/visual or just mere coincidence. I would think they shouldn't make that much of a difference for iron play.
I'm going to play a full round this weekend with them for the first time and see how that goes.

I've taken a few and gotten some great feedback. (my swing used to basically be all arms and hands and I never made a proper turn. My natural coordination led to some really good distance but I was beyond inconsistent) Will likely take a couple more next year. While I'm not a good golfer, I am capable of making good swings (people that see me hit are usually very surprised when I tell them that I cant break 100) and generally have a good idea of what I'm doing wrong.
When I started playing back in my early 20's, I would constantly swing the club way too hard. This led to me jerking the club down on the ball and chunking a lot of iron shots. As i got a little better and learned to slow down, I think I over corrected a bit (which is why now my misses tend to be thin or just generally passive swings trying not to chunk). Its so weird, because I can put wedges and short irons out to where I want them pretty well on the range. (and its easily the part of my game that I practice the most). Just doesn't translate on the course.
I feel like at some point next year (assuming I can play more consistently and avoid any further meltdowns) its just gonna click and I'm going to drop like 8-10 strokes really quickly. I had a couple of rounds this year where I was definitely striking the ball well enough to break 100, but REALLY struggled to putt on the tough greens at my dad's club. I almost always putt much better when I played at other courses (even the nicer county courses in my area). But the greens at my dad's place are just brutal.

I didn't either. But I found one still in pretty good condition and tried it for the fun of it. Surprisingly liked it a lot for chipping and especially putting. Bought a box and will put some in play this Friday.
Could see them being tougher to spot in grass though.

I bought a box of those when they came out. I found those decent but a bit underwhelming for the hype.They make the same ball without the design
I rate golf balls in three tiers:
1. Pro V1/Pro V1x - too expensive to play regularly, but nothing compares. The best ball out there by far.
2. Top other brand balls that are around 35 dollars/dozen, in this particular order: Vice, Srixon Z Star, Taylor Made Lethal Tour Preferred, Callaway Chrome Soft, Bridgestone BB330 series.
3. Cheaper but decent balls (around 20-25 per box): Srixon Trispeed or Q Star, Taylor Made Lethal, Titleist Velocity, Callaway Diablo.
I'll usually have a box of some low spin, cheap ball to use off the tee for scrambles (Callaway Hex Hot/Power, Precept Laddie), but wouldn't consider that regularly for play.

I'm not trying to be argumentative here but
Tour preferred X are not lethal tour by TM, they don't make a lethal tour
2 completely different balls.
Chrome soft and truvis are the same ball. They call the soccer pattern Truvis.
Prov TM tour preferred B330S all pretty equal
For cold weather a Callaway super soft is great minus putting
