I'm heading out to San Fran for work at the end of the month, and thinking of bringing the clubs to get a round or two in while I am there.

Any solid public courses people would recommend there? I did a quick search but did not find anything that jumped out.
Depends how far outside of San Fran you are willing to drive. There are a dozen or so high end daily fees that are exceptional with an hour drive. Eagle Ridge, Hiddenbrooke, The Bridges, just to name a few. Presidio is a great course that probably one of the closest to the city as well.

+1

in the city, Harding Park > Presidio > Lincoln Park.

IIRC, Harding is open to the public and spendy for non-residents. i'd pay for it though. fun round of golf

Presidio is public and isn't cheap. plus: great views of the city, challenging course. minus: always cold/windy, cannot get a flat lie anywhere, greens are slow.

Lincoln Park is public and reasonably priced. it sees a lot of traffic, and maybe isn't in the best shape, but it does have some fun holes and isn't too long.

in addition to urbanhack's suggestions (Hiddenbrooke is my favorite of them) i'd also look at Chabot in the East Bay. #18 is a Par 6. kinda memorable. Poppy Ridge is a bit of a drive, and is in really good shape.

have fun.

9.3.15

Out - 47

In - 45

3 fairways, 2 GIR, 32 putts.

driver killing me again. only hit one "decent" drive, everything else is a dead-pull, weak push/fade/slice or pop-up. i just have no clue where i'm going wrong with this thing. i forgot to charge the battery on my GPS, so played somewhat blind on yardages. the 2 GIR is more a product of bad tee shots rather than not knowing if i'm 140 or 145 out.

one three putt, and no birdies. short game was above average to good: had solid touch around the greens all day. highlight: roped a 6i from about 175 (uphill) on the green on the #1 handicap hole...made a par. it's usually a double bogey on that hole.

I just played the best round of my life - beat my previous best by 7 shots.

I'm a 22 handicap at the moment. I think the best I've been is a 21 - never been below 20. I've played 60 rounds in the last year, 34 in the 90s and 24 in the 100s. Bogey golf is my goal right now. I started taking lessons at the beginning of the year and I've gotten a little better but not consistently.

I was out of town for nearly the entire month, getting back late last week. I had Monday off so I figured I'd play, expecting that I wouldn't hit the ball that well after not swinging a club the whole time I was gone. I was right. I played 9 holes and was in the 50s. Topping the ball, hitting it fat/thin.....maybe 2-3 decent shots. I figured I'd be bad - but not THAT bad.

Went to the range Tuesday after work. Swing felt better and after a few shots, I remembered something I'd been talking with my instructor about before I left. We were talking about how the arms should be straight down at address. I remember watching golf on TV and the commentators had drawn a line from the shoulder to the hands on one of the players and it was a straight line. I also focused on keeping the weight on my front foot when I brought the club back rather than shift my weight and sway towards my right foot.

It was like a switch clicked. Nearly everything I hit the rest of the range session was 1000% better than the day before. Irons were going straight and I wasn't slicing my 3-wood like I occasionally do. I did the same thing at the range yesterday. Things were looking up.

I had the day off today so I figured I'd get a round in and see if my new-found knowledge would translate to the course.

I shot 40/42 for an 82. I'd never shot better than an 89 before. 80-freaking-2.

7/14 fairways

1/4 greens on par-3s

7 GIR

3 birdies (new personal best)

5 pars

6 bogeys

4 doubles. Nothing worse than a double bogey which I've never done before

One 3-putt (tied personal best)

Six 1-putts

Sorry for the long post but I had to brag. :)

Equipment question: Today I hit my 3-wood ~230yds off the tee. I did get one about 260 but I think I had some help with the wind. I haven't been hitting my driver for the past several months due to an ugly slice but this week I tried again at the range. I'm not really hitting it much farther than my 3-wood, if at all. My 3-wood is new (Ping G30, bought last August) and my driver is a TaylorMade R5 (bought ~10 years ago). Do I need a new driver?
nice round - congrats!

re: new driver - not sure if you really need it when you're hitting the 3W consistently and not losing that much distance. if you do get a new one, be sure to try everything you can, even if it's not "your brand". i was all ready to get a BioCell a couple of years back, and the guy at the local shop had me hit a bunch of others. ended up walking out with a Ping G25. if you can, get fitted or at least have someone check your launch angle and spin rate to make sure the Driver you get matches your swing. high(er) lofts may be better too.

Harding Park is absolutely the way to go if it's within your budget.

I haven't played out there in years, but our public go-to's were San Geronimo near Fairfax, Fountaingrove in Santa Rosa, Oakhurst in Clayton, Silverado in Napa, and WIndsor in Santa Rosa. Played San Geronimo and Fountaingrove most. Both were always in good shape at the very least.

Not a fan of Presidio under the best of weather, but it is miserable there on a regular basis. It's right in the convention channel and it sucks.

ETA: Tilden Park on the hill behind Berkeley is okay and relatively convenient. Plus, you can eat and check out Berkeley afterwards if that interests you.

Left my range finder in a cart on Tuesday night and went back the next night and nobody turned it in. I have found a Titleist wedge, a Cleveland wedge, a Nike putter and a range finder in the last couple of years and turned it in right away. Would never thing of keeping another golfers lost equipment. Pisses me off.

Seriously would anyone keep equipment found on a course?

Wow ... I've been lucky. Usually I leave the range finder in the cart though when I left it.

Been a month since I played. :kicksrock:

I always turn stuff in, but I don't think anything I've lost has ever been returned. Wish more golfers were like you and I.

I need to work on my short game. I shot 48/49 yesterday and in addition to keeping track of fairways hit and # of putts, I decided to note how far away from the hole I was on my first putt.

The median distance away was 24 feet. I only hit two GIR so most of the time I was chipping or pitching on. My two 3-putts were from 72 and 48 feet.

If I can decrease the median distance, in theory that should lead to more 1-putts and reduce my score. I'll continue to track it to see if there's a correlation.

How far do you guys hit your wedges? Say 52-56-60?

I used to hit my 52-110-115 56-90-100 60?? My 60 is totally erratic. Anywhere from 40-70. Stopped using it in the fairway because I was blading too many. Like to use it from the rough around the green if I have to pitch over a trap.

Playing with a shoulder issue I have lost around 10 yards an iron. Now my 56 is around 90 tops.

52 (my sand wedge): From 90 to 110

56: From 75 to 90

60: From 60 to 75

Note: I took my 56 out of my bag and rarely use the 60 unless I need to flop a shot from green side. Use my sand wedge for just about everything 110 and in. Just open the face a bit to adjust now.

Wow.

Shot 72 yesterday (par 70) from the back tees (6500), so it's not a terribly difficult golf course. I bogeyed the first three holes and managed to get up and down, make a few pars and get out on the front 9 with a 39. Birdied the first hole on the back 9 and ended up shooting 33! It finally all came together. I hit fairways, greens and made a lot of 10 to 14 foot putts. I just didn't feel like a great round, but I was just steady and started to hit my irons with some great contact. This is the lowest round on a scorecard in more than 15 years for me.

This has me very excited for the big upcoming trip to Greenbrier and The Homestead in a few weeks!!

Played this past weekend and I hit the ball the best I've hit it this summer. Drives were back down the fairway. Irons were really nice. I'm still having trouble with nailing my distances down with the new clubs, but I'm zeroing in.

Yet I still managed to shoot a 94 which is around what I've been shooting when I was striking the ball terribly. :hot:

I drained a 80+ foot putt for birdie at one point. Longest putt I've ever made. It felt awesome.

Been tracking my handicap via GHIN for about four years now. On the GHIN website it doesn't look like you can find your handicap history any more than one year back.

Am I missing something? If not on the GHIN website, does anyone know of where this data is stored (if at all)? Thought someone here might now. If not, I will try to contact GHIN in some way to find out.

Shot 75 sunday. It was an ugly 75 if that's possible. I was putting lights out again. I just bought a new grip for my putter and am afraid to put it on

Backed this up with an 81 at Thunderhawk, one of the tougher courses in Chicago. Shot 38 on the back nine with a double and 8 pars. Had 5 birdie putts inside of 15 feet and couldn't make any of them. I'm finally hitting fairways and greens.

Leaving tomorrow for 108 holes of golf in 4 days. Greenbrier and Homestead resorts. Boom!

:excited: :banned: :pickle: :drive:

Happy ending. Friday I get a call from the course my league is in and the pro said a guy turned in my range finder. Seems like a HS kid had found it and was using it golfing with his dad when his father said "Where did you get that range finder?" Kids says I found it in a pull cart at Northville Hills. The father took it and after the round drove it back up to the course where it was found and turned it in.

visited 6 courses today for business in Chicago. All of them were packed. Talk about a late season bonus. Wish I could have been out there.

65 and Sunny in Michigan today. Hope to get out for 9 this afternoon. Talked to the owner of a local course I play at and this has been the best year he has had in over a decade because of all the September, Oct, November rounds played. We have had many days already in November in the high 60s, low 70s.

Played my third round of the year yesterday in MN. November 15th and it was a perfect 57 degrees and sunny.

I'm a typical high handicapper. Highlight of the day was a perfect downhill left to right putt, 25' birdie on a par five. GREAT DAY! Great to be outside with my brother.

finished the year. At a 6.8

lowest ive been in a long time. My last round was an 85 but out of season. Probably play another once or twice

Same every which way. In fact I usually don't even carry my 60.

First time ever I am going golfing on Christmas eve morning. Forecast is for 61 and mild in lower Michigan.

Haven't played in months. Got out and played in freezing but perfectly clear weather which is rare where I live this time of year.

Mountains ringing the horizon covered in snow, any part of the course in shade was white, not a cloud in the sky. Was fantastic.

Was crushing it by my standards, only lost one ball and that was because it was on a semi frozen area of standing water that I couldn't get out on far enough without breaking through.

Best round I have played prolly this year. Great game, can't wait to play again.

Just got back from Vegas a couple of days ago - played out there for the first time in my 30+ trips out there.

Sat 12/26 - played at Bali Hai. Temps in the 40s with 20mph winds. It was a little cold but nothing horrible. The wind made it harder than it would have been otherwise. I'm also not very good. It wasn't busy that day - we only saw a couple of other groups on the course. Shot 49/51.

Mon 12/28 - played at Shadow Creek. This was a total first-class golf experience from the time we left the hotel. Got picked up in a limo to take us to the course - it's about 15-20 min from the Strip. The golf course is on Shadow Creek Drive but there are no signs at the guardhouse gate. As we were driving up to the clubhouse, we couldn't see the course due to small mounds/hills that had been built up on each side of the road. Got checked in and met our caddie Sarge (served 30 years in the Marine Corps) - he was a great guy and very helpful on a course we'd never seen before.

We warmed up a bit at the driving range with Sarge watching to get an idea of our skill levels. We started on the back 9 - a little nervousness on the first tee but after a couple of warmup shots we were on our way. The course was in perfect condition. All you can see are trees and mountains - if you didn't know you were in Las Vegas, you'd think you were in the middle of South Carolina. Temps in the mid-40s but with sun and no wind, it was a perfect day for golf. The championship tees play ~7600 yards with the regular tees at ~6600. I normally play the whites at home (~6100 yards) but none of the holes felt super long. There were a few par-4s at or near 440 yards but my GIR % isn't very high normally so it wasn't a big change when I was missing the green on my 2nd shot on those holes.

This was the first time I'd ever played with a caddie. It took a few holes but we got used to Sarge having our drivers waiting on the tee boxes and handing us our putters as we walked to the green. He was fantastic at telling us the putting line which saved us at least a few strokes. We took pictures on nearly every hole. Ended up playing the back 9 in 43 but limped home on the front 9 with a 60.

I finished 2015 with a handicap of 20.4. I'd like to knock a few strokes off it this year, just gotta get out and practice. All areas of my game could use work but I'm primarily going to focus on the long game to start. I lose ~5 strokes/round due to penalties. A close second is my inability to hit greens on par-3s (~20%). Improving those two things will get me into the high 80s/low 90s consistently.

Here's looking forward to a great 2016 of golf!

Damn, you got on shadow creek?

I've played Bali hai which is great but gave never sniffed shadow creek despite knowing one of the caddies there.

You definitely didn't cheat your Vegas golf experience

You have to stay at an MGM Mirage property (we were staying at Mirage). This is funny, though - my friend called to get a tee time a couple of months before our trip and his MLife account wasn't good enough to get a time. Mine wasn't either - but when he gave them my wife's name, it was no problem to get a Monday tee time.

Our MLife accounts are linked so I'm not sure why her name worked and mine didn't but she sure likes reminding me of it. :bag:

2015 recap....

started the year at 20.9 and finished at 14.5...

played 127 rounds...best was an 83

still working on keeping the ball in play off the tee, consistently chipping to within 5 ft and not 3 putting...

looking forward to 2016 and maybe getting the index down to 10...

Started at 8.2 got down to 6.8.

My last non post round was a 51 39 :vomit:

I only played about 30 rounds and anymore I just show up and play

Started and ended at a 6.5, with a few ups and downs...but my putting is drastically improved heading into next year, so for the first time in years I feel like I can actually start scoring better.

I love it, man. Actually tweaked my stance to fit the putter...which is the opposite of what I've done for the last 20 years.

Thanks again!! Hope your new one works out.
