This is a departure from the Obama campaign's usual rhetoric, though still not on par with McCain's smear tactics.I'd rather this be about as far as it goes, even if he would benefit politically from stooping to McCain's level.

I think this about the time when we're told that we're in the minority and don't matter. personally I don't think the reason McCain closed the gap is due to the liberal base shifting right.If he can't win without Hillary Clinton, he doesn't deserve to run the country.I'd prefer him to win without running any negative ads, saying stuff people want to hear, or picking a VP for no more reason than a political reason, but I'm not sure someone like him can do that and win.
Like I said I haven't been following closely, but how many houses McCain has (unless he got a sweetheart deal from Countrywide) has nothing to do the election. It's probably a plus that they aren't being foreclosed on.

More likely that the country doesn't deserve him.I'm cynical when it comes to what it takes in politics to win. You can't be too idealistic or you'll be killed. I support Obama 100%, but there are things I think he'll have to do, contra to his message, to get him in the office. It's the reality of politics in America, and putting Hillary on the ticket might just be one of those things he has to do. I hope not, I hope he can do it without having to go with Hillary, but we'll see.If he loses, and doesn't put Hillary on there, I believe that will be the single biggest reason people attribute to his loss. Might he want to preempt that by picking her? We'll see. Maybe he can win without her. It's more about countering the McCain campaign's labeling of Obama as elitist as well as showing how out of touch McCain is with regular people's problems. They probably should have thrown the "whiner" comment in that ad somewhere, too.

I agree - McCain's wealth and housing portfolio is not an issue. As others have mentioned, Obama's people are fighting the elitist label and hoping to define McCain as out of touch. In that commercial, I think McCain's quote about the US economy fundamentals being in good shape is fair game to use against him, but I wouldn't have put in the part about him not knowing how many houses he owns, even if it is the type of simple, soundbite message that resonates with the mouthbreathers who overwhelmingly vote Republican.BassNBrew said:

I've found Obama's VP anouncement procedure (teasing everyone for three days, maybe more) to be kind of lame, too, but whatever.
The thing that strikes me as odd is that he's going to have voluntarily chosen to anounce his running mate either on a Friday afternoon or on a Saturday. Those are usually times you choose when you want to bury bad news. Its almost as if Obama thinks his supporters are going to need a weekend to calm down after he makes his pick, almost as if he's planning on selecting:
1. A shrew-like former opponent who argued that he was unqualified for the presidency and not a real American to boot, or
2. A guy so obscure as to make Dan Quayle 1988 look like Brangelina by comparison.
Seriously, if Obama was going to pick Biden, Bayh, or somebody like that, wouldn't he come out with that on Wed or Thurs when he could enjoy a few favorable news cycles?

I think he was going to do it yesterday, but then the whole houses thing came up so there was no point. Either that or its Hillary.There is one benefit of pushing it back so far. It's basically made McCain pick a non-newsworthy event since everyone will be focusing on the Dem convention from Sat until next Thursday, basically leaving McCain with the Friday before Labor Day weekend or this Sunday....either way it limits the press coverage.

Originalliy I wanted a Bayh/Obama ticket a couple years ago.Hes considered a centrist and has plenty of appeal in that direction.And, like Obama, he has capable intelligence. Which this country needs.

I'm hearing that a surprise pick for McCain's veep could be General David Petraeus.
John McCain is an authoritarian. By his record as a senator, it is clear that McCain believes in social and economic controls. He is not interested in freedom. He is far too ambitious. He wants to be emperor, not president. If he reaches the White House, the first thing he does is work against freedom. I can see him bringing back the Fairness Doctrine for example, citing a need to "work with democrats" and try to silence critics like Rush Limbaugh.
But he is old. I've always said that, if I'm right about McCain, he's going to seek a strong man as a veep. His priority will be to find a guy he can entrust to continue his work of establishing Imperial America. As soon as I heard Petraeus was on the short list, the final 4, I said to myself, "That's the guy. That's his veep. He's going to make Petraeus his apprentice, his Darth Vader. Its a perfect fit. It doesn't matter if the veep has political experience or not. He wants a guy that can succeed him as emperor."
