A true baseball fan knows that you never ever hang your hat on Golden Glove awards.A sham of an award in baseballCome on, you can do better then that!RockNRolen said:Funkley said:Inge was great last year defensively but let's see him do it 2-3 times like Rolen has. Rolen likely won't be the same after the injuries so it's not even something that can be compared anymore. I do know one thing, if it's game 7 of the WS and I need a 3B to field a ball to win the game I'll put my $$$ on Rolen. It should also be noted that Rolen has 7 Gold Gloves, for those of keeping score at home.

Definitely. I just think they should have a chance to start the season in the rotation. Dumping money into Marquis could prevent that. Both showed some flashes, and will probably compete for spots. Just heard pitching coach larry rothchild on the radio last night - they are saying Prior/Wade Miller/Kerry Wood are all healthy, but it's going to be hard to tell until they actually start pitching. At least they aren't going into the season counting on them, and, right now, the rotation looks like this:1) Zambrano2) Lilly3) Marquis4) Hill5) Marshall with oompeition from Prior/MillerI know that Kerry Wood is now a relief pitcher, but what about Mark Prior? What's his story? Is he going to play in 2007?
See, this is what makes the Marquis signing look like overkill. Assuming that Zambrano, Lilly, and Hill hold down 3/5 of the rotation, I think it is a reasonable expectation that 2 of Prior, Miller, Marshall, Marmol, and possibly even Wood can hold down the 4/5 slots this season. Add in the fact that Marquis was horrendous last season and is getting big money for 3 seasons, it seems like a really stupid signing.Just heard pitching coach larry rothchild on the radio last night - they are saying Prior/Wade Miller/Kerry Wood are all healthy, but it's going to be hard to tell until they actually start pitching. Had they gone out and signed a pitcher that mattered (i.e took a chance on Mark Mulder), I would see your point.I hope you are right eventually, though.GordonGekko said:I think the Meche signing was smart. Yes, he's a middle of the road pitcher and the Royals clearly overpaid him. But they have a new GM and he wanted to send the organization a message that things are going to be different now. Players and staff that are used to losing get a reminder that things will be shaken up. On a purely talent basis, it was a bad contract. But it's just one contract. To give a new GM some press (who was talking about the Royals before?) and help him send a message, I think it was a good move.
How does KC's offense stack up with the rest of the AL ?Obviously, they are young, but I know there are some hitters there with upside.GordonGekko said:I think the Meche signing was smart. Smart? He hasn't been a middle of the road starter since 2000. He has been below average in every conceivable category. Too many walks, not enough strikeouts (although last year he had a bunch), too many homeruns allowed, etc.If that is the new GM's message...that he will pay stupid amount of money for AAAA pitching...well, I would imagine he wont be GM too long.Overpaying for mediocrity (with little upside) is what kills franchises. Either pay for studs, or sign high upside, undervalued talent.KC had a payroll of 49 million last year. They are paying Gil freakin Meche nearly 1/5th of that (9 mill). 1/5th of the payroll is alotted for that? Wow, just wow.GordonGekko said:I think the Meche signing was smart. Pudge Rodriguez. I give him a lot of credit for coming to Detroit and Detroit a lot of credit for paying him more than the market value at the time. I think this theory is supported by Pudge and what the Tigers have done since.GordonGekko said:Why would studs go to KC? That's the Catch 22, studs don't think you are a prime FA destination until you win, and you don't win unless you have studs. No, overpaying for mediocrity CONSISTENTLY is what kills franchises. Now if Moore signed five more guys at giant contracts, then you can say he's running the team into the ground. It's one contract. Every team has at least one bad contract on it's roster. Even good medium range cost veterans, do you think they want to go to KC? The only people going to KC are people who can't find a job anywhere else. There's a reason why they can't find a job anywhere else. Signing Meche gives Moore some street cred. People take notice. Other GMs take notice. There are times when a franchise has to roll the hard six. Sometimes its better to occasionally overpay one player than to give the franchise and the fans the perception that you are a loser, you are going to do nothing and you accept being a loser.Overpaying for mediocrity (with little upside) is what kills franchises. Emil Brown? Upside? THE GUY IS 32 YEARS OLD!GordonGekko said:The Royals have a pretty putrid offense. But to be fair to their new GM, he's gunning for pitching and more pitching this offseason. Besides Meche, he picked up Dotel for his bullpen. There were some Rule 5 guys and they got Bannister from the Mets.
KC has a kid at first, Shealy, and another in the outfield, Emil Brown, who might have a decent upside. Mark Teahan, who came from the A's farm system, was expected to give much much more offensively. Reggie Sanders and Mike Sweeney are the veteran bats who go feast or famine. More famine that anything.
This offense is definitely busted, but to be fair, the old Royals strategy was to try and be another MoneyBall team, thus picking up Teahan. I think it will be a few years before the new GM Dayton Moore turns it around. I'd say he probably has to start from scratch at this point, but to his benefit, no one is expecting anything out of the Royals.
I suspect Moore will wait out the current market and grab a few cheap veterans at the end, let them provide a little veteran leadership for his younger guys and, if they are somewhat productive, try to trade them at the deadline for even more young warm bodies.
You realize that Gil Meche signed the largest contract in KC's history? If that doesnt make you cringe, I dont know what would.KC will have to overpay for premiere free agents. But players will play there.I can't imagine any fan of a team with a 50 million dollar payroll being happy with a 10 million dollar a year scrub anchoring their staff.I dont know how this gives Moore street cred. I would imagine most other GMs are shaking their heads and laughing at this signing.GordonGekko said:Why would studs go to KC? Your experience is good, but the Kansas City Royals organization has strict standards when it comes to signing players. How many starting pitchers signing more than 3-4 year length contracts have really helped their new teams and given those teams a great value for their dollar? I'd argue that signing a starting pitcher to a lengthy contract is already a high risk low reward move no matter who you sign. Mike Mussina didn't do half bad, but look at Kevin Brown, Chan Ho Park, Mike Hampton, Denny Neagle, the list goes on and on.My contention is that Dayton Moore knows Meche's contract is a bad contract, but he is also factoring in the value of the signing in terms of intangibles outside of Meche's actual production. The guy is trying to do something instead of doing nothing. For a franchise like KC that has been in the dumps for so long, I can't really fault a guy for trying to do something besides let the franchise wait and die.KC will have to overpay for premiere free agents. But players will play there.
You do realize that there are women on this board that moan about "only the Red Sox and Yankees get talked about, blah, blah, blah. This is the Official Offseason Moves thread! We will even talk about the Pirates, if they ever do anything. You guys do realize this entire page is dedicated to the Royals, right? But that's what Moore wants, huh? People talking about his crappy signings?![]()
My point is, I hardly consider this "doing anything".You do realize that there are women on this board that moan about "only the Red Sox and Yankees get talked about, blah, blah, blah. Really? The Royals are typically dormant this time of year. They shelled out top $ for the "best" available pitcher. Whether it's a good move or not is certainly the discussion here. The fact that the Royals have given us something to talk about is exciting to some.My point is, I hardly consider this "doing anything".You do realize that there are women on this board that moan about "only the Red Sox and Yankees get talked about, blah, blah, blah.
